claig I know you are a unique variety of tin foil hatter, but I have been following you for a while, and I want to say that I'm really happy for you that your views have been vindicated. You've been banging on saying for ever (mumsnet time) that there will be an uprising against the elite, that it's not left v right, it's top v bottom, and mumsnet has patted you on your tinfoil hat and sent you on your way. But you did read the mood right.
I also see this as a revolution of the bottom of the heap, who were the cannon fodder for a particular view of society, probably from the early days of thatcher onwards. I mean, they were literal cannon fodder Long before that, but once we stopped undertaking conscription style wars, they became disposable in other ways. And the first time we asked "is this working for you?" 17 million people (or whatever it is) said "no. Not so as you'd notice".
Me, I think every one of us needs to examine our spending habits and our saving habits, the way we navigate through society. Are we contributing to people being on shitty zero hour contracts or minimum wage shift work in order that we can have our carrots for 10p a pound cheaper? We all helped to create this underclass, by taking our privilege for granted. If we want to heal the divisions it's really time to start taking their needs seriously, otherwise it's not just going to be "x"s placed in the opposite ballot box from the one we see as optimal.
And it doesn't matter whether the leavers were told that leaving would make matters worse. There are millions of people who thought "fuck it" because those telling them "you've never had it so good" have been signally failing them their whole lives.
I love it that we live in a country where the establishment can be thrown into complete turmoil by a few million marks on pieces of paper.
Time to make sure we are all growing vegetables and start keeping chickens (or guerilla urban gardening for those in the big smoke). Bagsy I get to be Barbara.
