I don't want another attack on me I already feel battered and bruised from people on here -I was watching Muse 'Uprising'' at Glastonbury, they were bloody fantastic and the lyrics jumped out at me (maybe I am going mad I don't know) but they summed up what I feel about the EU and why I voted how I did. Worth a listen if anyones has a spare five minutes.

Laughing at all the high-fiving with Claig - you do know he/she is the nuttiest conspiracy theorist on here?

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:07

I know Mango Smile
I live it too.

ommmward · 27/06/2016 10:09

claig I know you are a unique variety of tin foil hatter, but I have been following you for a while, and I want to say that I'm really happy for you that your views have been vindicated. You've been banging on saying for ever (mumsnet time) that there will be an uprising against the elite, that it's not left v right, it's top v bottom, and mumsnet has patted you on your tinfoil hat and sent you on your way. But you did read the mood right.

I also see this as a revolution of the bottom of the heap, who were the cannon fodder for a particular view of society, probably from the early days of thatcher onwards. I mean, they were literal cannon fodder Long before that, but once we stopped undertaking conscription style wars, they became disposable in other ways. And the first time we asked "is this working for you?" 17 million people (or whatever it is) said "no. Not so as you'd notice".

Me, I think every one of us needs to examine our spending habits and our saving habits, the way we navigate through society. Are we contributing to people being on shitty zero hour contracts or minimum wage shift work in order that we can have our carrots for 10p a pound cheaper? We all helped to create this underclass, by taking our privilege for granted. If we want to heal the divisions it's really time to start taking their needs seriously, otherwise it's not just going to be "x"s placed in the opposite ballot box from the one we see as optimal.

And it doesn't matter whether the leavers were told that leaving would make matters worse. There are millions of people who thought "fuck it" because those telling them "you've never had it so good" have been signally failing them their whole lives.

I love it that we live in a country where the establishment can be thrown into complete turmoil by a few million marks on pieces of paper.

Time to make sure we are all growing vegetables and start keeping chickens (or guerilla urban gardening for those in the big smoke). Bagsy I get to be Barbara.

ommmward · 27/06/2016 10:11

P.S. I know I'm raving; this just felt like the right thread to do it on 😄

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:13

*love. Gah. autocorrect and misspelling seems to be degenerative Blush

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:21

ommmward brilliant, beautiful post expressing just what I believe too Thanks.

British politicians have neglected the lower classes and not educated them or promoted an entrepreneurial culture instead increasing the gap between rich and poor not just in terms of money but other lifestyle inequalities. In my professional experience, there simply aren't enough qualified and outstanding British, let alone English job candidates. Wherever I have worked and recruited, we have strictly adhered to equal opportunities and sign up the best candidates for the job. Sadly many British people educated in the state system can not compete against some of the brightest Euro immigrant workers. Just last week, my husband interviewed 12 candidates, the job was offered to an amazing Portuguese guy, who is cut above. It is different with privately educated people though, they are able to compete and often do ned up in well paid roles. I agree that the British lower classes have been left in the lurch. This is not the fault of immigrants though and not of the EU. It is the responsibility of UK politicians.

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:23

MyMac Grin
Lol ! I love it obvs Blush

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:25

Ommmward yes, yes, yes!
(Ever so slightly orgasmic!)

A4Document · 27/06/2016 10:25

voted Leave, came into my office today and was sarcastically 'You must be absolutely over the moon' said to me as soon as I sat down.

Workplace bullying for your valid political opinions? Dreadful.

claig · 27/06/2016 10:28

'Claig There will always be an 'elite' in any society. What's the alternative? '

Absolutely. The alternative is that we hold the elite to account through our democratic institutions, we can vote them out which we can't do of the EU. We need more democratic representation such as proportional representation so that we can dilute the power of any one clique who treat themselves to expenses pai for by the public.

We have to have rulers and an elite, but they have to reflect our wishes and be accountable to us.

loobyloo1234 · 27/06/2016 10:28

Ommmward

This 100% - some people voted Leave because I'm sure, life simply cannot get any worse. The 'I'm alright Jack' remain voters need to understand why so many people voted out, not vindicate them

PS I am so up for growing my own vegetables ... I need to look into this ASAP Smile

claig · 27/06/2016 10:32

Thanks, ommmward

'I love it that we live in a country where the establishment can be thrown into complete turmoil by a few million marks on pieces of paper.'

Absolutely. I couldn't quite believe it, I had to pinch myself, I thought they would rig it when Boris and Farage conceded minutes after 10 pm. But we did it, we won and that shows what an amazing country we live in and what a great system we have, where we the unlistened to, the ignored, the powerless shook the entire Establishment and have had them all come out saying "we respect the will of the British people"

Makes me very proud of the British people and to live in such a great country.

glassgarden · 27/06/2016 10:33

I love it that we live in a country where the establishment can be thrown into complete turmoil by a few million marks on pieces of paper

I think all elites live in fear of the baying pitchforked mob
The greater the imbalance of power the bigger the backlash

The 'instinct' to react against perceived injustice is very deep seated

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:33

Me too Claig.
Very proud.

loobyloo1234 · 27/06/2016 10:35

Workplace bullying for your valid political opinions? Dreadful.

It gets better A4. My Director just came in, sat down at my desk - as I had nipped to the toilet - and was on the BBC currency exchange website when I came back Shock He asked me to read out the $ price (we work off of dollars here) I have a backbone though, it's pathetic, and I will not be made to feel that I have done something wrong Sad

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:35

There are 'I'm alright Jack' leave voters too who have paid off their mortgage have excellent finical assets and said they and their privately educated dc will be able to nicely survive any recession.

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:36

*any recession caused by Brexit. Their main concern was Eastern Europeans living and working in the UK.

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:37

loobyloo1234 that is unacceptable and your manager is on a power trip.

glassgarden · 27/06/2016 10:39

Laughing at all the high-fiving with Claig - you do know he/she is the nuttiest conspiracy theorist on here?
You'll have noticed that you're on your own with that viewpoint Gertrude

ommmward · 27/06/2016 10:42

Also, the EU is a cartel. It really really bothers me that we have spent the last however long screwing over African farmers by having tariff free trade for those in our nice white northern club but they (the African farmers) just can't compete. Seems to me that the genuinely global thing to do for the greater good is to get out of an exclusive club of western privilege, and do our bit as a nation, particularly for and with the countries with whom we have an awkward colonial history. I keep hearing that leavers are racists, and it is pretty unjust. My hope is that, by opting out of a wealthy cartel, we can begin to level the playing field a bit for the rest of the world.

MyMacMess · 27/06/2016 10:47

Makes me very proud of the British people and to live in such a great country

OMG Confused What is so great about this country as opposed to other countries Claig? You sound awfully nationalistic, not merely patriotic, I have time for patriotism or better still people who get involved in their local communities to empower and enable and to contribute. I don't think this country is particularly great compared to any other country. Who cares? Don't you love all of humanity Claig? Just the English?

What has made this country 'great' for me was the tolerance and diversity and the buzzing time of opportunity in terms of learning and developing yourself further. I have experienced living in London and one other city up north where talent determines your luck, not ethnicity or your passport. This was due to a combination of open and tolerant Brits and the EU ideology of a connected Europe. Now we are divided.

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:47

YY again Ommm.

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:51

MyMac, the meaning of that comment by Claig is perfectly clear within the context of that post.

I agree with her.

Seriously, read the post again and you'll see what she's proud of.

glassgarden · 27/06/2016 10:53

Eu ideology is about many states ruled by an unelected and unaccountable elite for the benefit of large private corporations

claig · 27/06/2016 10:55

'What is so great about this country as opposed to other countries Claig? '

The brilliant British people, the polite, tolerant, generous to charities worldwide, decent British people. Britain is a special place with great people and a great system which is why so many people want to come and live here. It is a great place, let's admit it. We took the elites on and beat them. Where else in the world would that have happened? You can count the places on the fingers of one hand.

'Don't you love all of humanity'

Of course I do and I want them all to enjoy the freedom and great system that we have, that is why I want Europe to be free of the EU too, not just us.

'Now we are divided.'

This division is being encouraged by our media and the political class who lost in the vote. They are hoping to have another referendum or to somehow stop a full Brexit. Ordinary people in the cafes and pubs are still united and the same as they were before Thursday.
