Brexit

Remainers have become undemocratic, desperate & embarrassing

With a petition being launched by remainers for a 2nd EU referendum & getting 1.5 million signatures already is this not a sign remainers have a total lack of respect for UK democracy and are getting desperate. Leave won on a high turnout, should remainers just accept the democratic will of British voters & work for the best Brexit possible?

Agreed on the location thing. Lots of peopl use proxy servers. It doesn't mean anything.

ohgoshIdontknow · 26/06/2016 13:38

Two million plus people who don't understand democracy.

Rather a staggering amount of stupidity in our country.

smallfox1980 · 26/06/2016 13:39

Stupid comment. It is part of our democracy that if you raise enough signatures on a petition it must be debated in parliament. Enshrined by law. The result.of a referendum however does.not have to be followed. You don't get to male the rules

SinisterBumFacedCat · 26/06/2016 13:42

So democracy basically means put up or shut up right? Hmm

smallfox1980 · 26/06/2016 13:42

Also in democratic.countries it had often been the case the referendums are required run. There are however lots of historical examples.of one off referendums being used in undemocratic countries
. Also.this wasn't a large majority win, far too close a result to make such a huge decision.

gunting · 26/06/2016 13:42

A referendum won by uninformed leavers is equally as undemocratic. People didn't know what they were voting for. Google said that the most searched for term on Friday in the uk was 'what is the EU' wtf??

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 13:48

I voted remain

People are very upset getting carried away with the social media storm and some posting the most ridiculous comments insulting all who voted leave

It would have would have been similar if remain had won

But an MP telling the public that is for them to make the decisions after we have been given a choice and voted is wrong I always like David Lammy but have lost respect for him

hubris · 26/06/2016 14:13

Enthusiasm, I have much respect for your comment.

WTAFisgoingon · 26/06/2016 14:28

I voted Remain but I agree with the OP. A second referendum because Remain are whinging about the result is a absurd idea. If you want Democracy you have to accept that you won't always win.

If we wanted a system where a win by a narrow margin would lead to a second referendum then that should have been put in place before hand, but they knew the result was going to be close and no such system was put in place.

I fully support having a debate on the petition, but I think that debate has to (and will) come up with the answer that no, there will not be a second referendum.

smallfox1980 · 26/06/2016 14:44

But the prime minister who has just resigned set the parameters for the referendum. We can question why and ask for reform. It's a democracy. Most mps don't want to leave the EU and 48% of the population, you can't make here decisions on such a smallong majority.

Cosmiccreepers203 · 26/06/2016 15:01

Again, what is wrong with checking the result and making sure there is a proper mandate for withdrawal? Again, the Irish voted twice on the Lisbon treaty to make sure they got it right.
The idea of democracy to to rule by concensus. There is no clear consensus here.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 26/06/2016 15:14

No Leaver can trumpet about remainers being desperate or not caring about democracy. Not when Leavers were so desperate to win that their campaign blared out 'pledges' it had to retract straight after winning. Now that's desperate.

BuggersMuddle · 26/06/2016 15:18

A referendum with no safeguards won by a slim margin is democratic.
A referendum campaign that was won based on lies - some of which have even been acknowledged - is democratic.
A referendum result that drags Scotland out of Europe against the will of 62% of our voters is democratic.
A referendum that Scots are being told we have to accept because we expressed our desire to remain part of the UK 2 years ago is democratic, despite evidence that a desire to remain part of the EU informed a chunk of the no vote.
A referendum won following a deceitful campaign led by a man who didn't seem to want the outcome he achieved is democratic.
A referendum following which appears to be followed by a good deal of buyer's remorse and / or making it clear they didn't understand what they were voting for is democratic.

A substantial number of people expressing concerns about any of the above is undemocratic, desparate and embarrassing.

This type of reasoning is why the decision to leave the EU should never have been subject to a referendum in the first place.

A second vote is necessary because voters were deliberately lied to the first time, as shown by the retractions clarifications on Friday. If this was a truly democratic result in which the people were given the opportunity to make an informed decision of their own free will, those clarifications would have been made earlier in the week. Democracy is not about who can shout the most lies. Not about who can succeed in misleading the gullible. That is all this referendum has been - a joke and an insult to democracy. The bigger thing to do would be to admit that and do it again properly. Another advantage could be getting a larger majority next time, one way or the other.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 15:33

Clarifications from Farage who will still llcause trouble he was not part of the leave campaign or will be involved he is bitter about that and will carry on as always stiring things up

Challenge the leave campaign (that is not the UKIP campaign) if that is successful then go from there

Hockeydude · 26/06/2016 15:42

The referendum has been a joke and a game to some politicians. The joke backfired. But we are all grown ups and when things fuck up, you have to get on and make the best of it from where you are. I voted remain, however I think that we now need to get a team of our best people over to Europe to negotiate our exit, simply because that is what has been democratically decided. It's a shame, I do think several leave campaigners told monstrous lies and swayed some voters into voting leave which some now regret. But you can't turn time back.

I mainly hold Boris Johnson responsible for the result. Farage, I can live with his involvement because leave has always been his stance, he believes in it and was genuinely jubilant at the result. But Boris has been playing games. He didn't even really want Brexit, he just wanted to put a big enough dent in Cameron that he could take over in a year. He doesn't want to take over now. He wasn't jubilant at the result. He is fucking playing cricket today and that makes me want him sent to prison. It's as if the turmoil is nothing to do with him. He has orchestrated massive instability and he needs to now stand up, take responsibility and fix it. But he seems to bear no responsibility. Not to mention the fact that his personal life is like something off Jeremy Kyle. Lies to people in his personal life, lies to the public. But hey never mind, he has personal wealth and could just quit. What about the rest of us you selfish fucker?

RedToothBrush · 26/06/2016 15:49

Haven't you read The Sun front page today?

There is a campaign to Smear Johnson.

It would seem that he is not responsible for being a fucknugget and we are all just trying to make the poor little mare out as one.

I am rapidly starting to agree with what I've seen elsewhere, that we need to loose the friendly Boris thing and use Johnson instead. Its easier to shirk it off if you are referred to in an informal way. He need to take responsibility

saffynool · 26/06/2016 15:50

If the Leavers are so sure of their cause, what's the problem with having another ref?

After all, you're on the side of history, aren't you? Your argument is so watertight and exciting, so forward-looking and so good for the country, after all. You've got all those major players just queuing up to lead us all into the the sunlit uplands of a post-EU Britain, haven't you? You've got your plan sorted and it's all going to bloody marvellous if only us pesky Remainers would shut up whining, yes? That much has been obvious over the last few days. So what's the problem?

Surely, if you're right, a second ref can only strengthen your case? I mean, you're denying yourselves the opportunity to really show those rude Remainers where they can shove their silly concerns about their jobs and their homes and their kids' futures.

Cmon, have the courage of your convictions, Leavers! Show us how it's really done!

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 15:57

Do you realise how ridiculous you are sounding

Show us how it's done Hmm

Oh please and you are sneering at leave voters

saffynool · 26/06/2016 16:07

Not sneering. Just suggesting that if the rightness of the Leave case is as self-evident as you think it is, you have nothing to fear from a second ref, do you?

Lottielou7 · 26/06/2016 16:13

Everyone in the UK (pretty much) will be desperate if Brexit goes ahead. Whichever way you voted. There are no winners. Someone needs to stop this madness.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 26/06/2016 16:16

I voted to remain

I can not support a call for mp's to make that decision now or for another referendum to be called

I would support a challenge to the leave campaign both were appalling. I do not think it will get anywhere though

Fallstar · 26/06/2016 16:17

The referendum was not binding. It was advisory.

We will have to wait and see what the politicians decide to make of this mess they have created.

Meanwhile, the country is divided, angry, frustrated and unsettled. What a farce.

Lottielou7 · 26/06/2016 16:18

This is a decision that should never have been given to the electorate in the first place.
