To think that Boris didn't actually want Brexit to happen

And that something else was afoot entirely?
Possibly with David's support, or knowledge at least.
There's been quite a bit about the divide between him and his family (not that that means much necessarily)
His propaganda for leaving was ridiculous in the extreme (£350 million a week for the NHS?)
His reaction since the results were announced
I can't help but wonder if he seriously misjudged the voting populace and this was never his intention at all. More a tactical move with a view to securing something else entirely, purely for his own personal gain.
You could never really accuse Boris of being in touch with the 'common people' after all.

I still think crickets OK. Not my passion. Beats sour-faced personal insults and swearing on MN Sad. Ta-ra.

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/06/2016 19:54

Bye!

truevoice · 25/06/2016 19:54

Not really Mitzy. I just said he made a political stand, rather late in the day, and I respect him for that. If you wanna imply something sleazy thats your call

areyoubeingserviced · 25/06/2016 20:18

Op , totally agree with the sentiments on this thread
Boris and Farage thought that we would remain in Europe.
Farage had already conceded defeat before the results ffs.
I was really upset when we voted to leave , but I have cheered up considerably since then as I know that Boris is up shit's creek.
His fancy Latin words aren't going to get him out of this.

I normally wouldn't click but I just had great fun reading the comments on one of the Daily Mail articles.
It seems buyers' remorse had kicked in big-time.

I've found the Daily Mail's response to all this just so WEIRD. I thought this is what they wanted? So why all the angst?

Divide and conquer.

Been out this afternoon and am yet to meet an exit person. If anything I'm gobsmacked at the passion of the remain voters who are aghast at the vote. And many are pensioners disgusted and embarrassed , their words, that young people's opinion of them as a collective is that they have ruined the future. Who did vote out and where is there passion to show us the future?

Ackvavit · 25/06/2016 22:21

Daily mail is weird - fun but not for serious discussion

Peregrina · 25/06/2016 22:37

Who did vote Leave? Well, this was like trying to find someone who voted for Maggie Thatcher, but they must have done.

rookiemere · 25/06/2016 22:38

Daily Mail might be a bit of a giggle for us, but some people believe what they read and were told to think and voted accordingly.

That's kind of one of the factors that got us into this mess, not taking the competition seriously and not realising that some people are so disenfranchised from main stream politics that they will believe whatever dream is sold to them, because no one has actually bothered to acknowledge them before.

The DM seems rather keen to distance itself from it's pre vote stance now, as they know the nation is going to go into recession as a result.

PumpkinPies38 · 25/06/2016 23:01

I think you may be right I thought that during his speeches. I think he may have wanted to have got about 45% and then the underdog leavers would be hailing him as a champion. This way he's got to deliver something.

LouisCK · 26/06/2016 08:17

I mean.

Look at this. Why have they chosen such awful photos of the candidates for the leadership election? its just so curious . I know they hate every one, but the Tories don't usually get such a rough ride. You'd think they'd be delighted with the results. Confused

I am amused at how evil Crabbe and Hunt look.

To think that Boris didn't actually want Brexit to happen
RaeSkywalker · 26/06/2016 08:56

I agree with this, wholeheartedly. He thought he'd do this to raise his profile, and then waltz into the conservative leadership (and number 10) at the next election as a "man of the people".

He's been surprised by the result, and surprised by the number of people that genuinely hate him, personally, for his part in this mess. As a pp said, he has sacrificed the future of our children on the altar of his ambition, and I can never, ever forgive him for it.

Of course they don't have a plan. I don't understand why people are so surprised, as their entire campaign was based on meaningless slogans. After the result, they wanted DC to do the work for them, probably underestimating his strength of feeling as well.

I sincerely hope that all the other leadership candidates wash their hands of it, and IDS, Gove or Bojo have to do it. The UK is screwed now anyway, I will enjoy watching them squirm as it happens.

powershowerforanhour · 26/06/2016 10:42

So BoJo becomes PM and has to spend half his time being photographed travelling round ruined desolate ex industrial towns engaging with the people who gave him his mandate for Brexit, and the other half negotiating the long miserable boring exit process itself and new trade deals with stone faced Eurocrats who didn't like being the butt of bendy banana jokes and are unmoved by pithy Latin epigrams. Enjoy your lovely new job Boris Wink

BrexitentialCrisis · 26/06/2016 11:05

I almost feel sorry for Boris and Gove. But then I remember that they have ruined the world and I don't feel sorry for them at all any more. Enjoy every minute Bo-Go.

That reminds me- one day when I was teaching year 1, some boys filled up the toilets with bogroll and then the drains got blocked and the whole school smelled like shit for days. Those boys were given an almighty bollocking by the headteacher and they looked just like this sorry pair. Effectively the same thing has just happened, except this time it's on a global scale and the shit just got real.

Saxie007 · 26/06/2016 11:08

BoJo just won't do it. He will not turn up. Just like Farage.

ModernToss · 26/06/2016 11:51

Anna Soubry pretty much confirming the whole premise of the OP (and not pulling her punches, either):

hownottofuckup · 26/06/2016 12:14

There's another similar thread to this one running, really interesting points being made on both.
I also posted this on the other thread copied from an email from Tim Farron i received last night

That is why I want to make clear that the Liberal Democrats will fight the next election on a clear and unequivocal promise to restore Britain’s prosperity and role in the world, with the United Kingdom in the European Union, not outside it.

Can't help but wonder how this will all pan out.

The lib dems are making a promise are they? Jolly good. Maybe they should all sign a pledge and tour the country speaking to students.

Boris is unravelling. Wink. Hope nobody is holding their breath waiting for Article 50.

GetAHaircutCarl · 27/06/2016 09:43

Boris is most certainly not ruling out a further question, either by referendum or GE.

He stated in the Telegraph that Brexit must accept that the win was not 'overwhelming.'

SouperSal · 27/06/2016 09:58

There would have to be another vote anyway as the govt currently have no mandate to "leave" (because "leave" hasn't yet been defined).

PerspicaciaTick · 27/06/2016 10:08

Can I just go back a bit and check something?
If we had a GE in which every major party included "Stay" in their manifesto, then...regardless of what sort of coalition/bodged together government we ended up with...they could say "We must honour our manifesto commitments and stay in EU"?? And ignore the referendum because it would be trumped by the GE?
