Victoria Derbyshire has been chatting to voters all morning, and more than one admitted voting to leave, but being shocked and worried about the resulting political turmoil. What did they think was going to happen!? I just can't understand their logic.

I watched an interesting one.

A married elderly couple who voted the EU in said they had waited 20 years for the chance to vote it back out . They said it was originally about trade but what they actually recieved wasn't what was promised.

cressetmama · 24/06/2016 15:24

Oakmaiden, we have what the EU, particularly Germany, wants most of all........... customers for their cars and white goods! Or did I not hear a German MP say on R4 this morning that German industry was seriously worried for their exports? French cosmetic firms, wine-makers and dairy producers are willingly going to shoot themselves in both feet and stop selling their luxury goods here, hein? Dolce & Gabbana and Prada will no longer sell clothes in Bond Street?

And somehow, I am not entirely convinced that the world's financial giants are going to up sticks from London, NY and Singapore which are without exception anglophone to take up residence in Germany or France.

There is another English speaking country that remains in the EU, have you forgotten? And its one with very low corporation tax.
Thats where a lot of the jobs will go. Lots of Brxiters are going to get a chock when they lose their jobs.

Oakmaiden · 24/06/2016 15:30

Uh - those would be imports, wouldn't they?

IceBeing · 24/06/2016 15:35

I think there are lots of educated reasons to leave the EU...I just think there are more to stay.

I would LOVE to know if Boris thought leave would win when he signed up to be poster boy for it. I think he was expecting to lose and then become the focus of future protest votes...

Cornishclio · 24/06/2016 15:35

Yanbu. I voted remain and was really shocked, annoyed, upset this morning at the result. Now I am just bleh, bleh and think that anyone voting leave without probably researching it or considering the implications deserve all they get in terms of consequences.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2016 15:38

Boris looked unhappy and worried IMO.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 15:39

Agreed.

IRegretNothing · 24/06/2016 15:40

Did anyone think, when Nigel Farage did his crowing, "no bullets were fired" (hideous thing to say) speech that he actually looked scared.

There was a touch of what looked like panic to me in his face.

Costacoffeeplease · 24/06/2016 15:41

I'm not surprised - I'd be fucking bricking it if I was him - everything that goes wrong for the next 5/10 years or however long, will be blamed on today's result, and him.

Be careful what you wish for Boris

Couldn't happen to a nicer chap - shame he's taking the uk down with him

Effendi · 24/06/2016 15:41

I'm bitter too. As an immigrant to another EU country my status here is up in the air. I may apply for my citizenship now.

But hey ho, when all the tourists are complaining that they are getting F all € to the £ and their EHIC card is no longer valid I'll be wondering how they voted.....

My own mother voted based on immigration and that really boils my piss.

StillDrSethHazlittMD · 24/06/2016 15:42

Of course Boris looked unhappy. He might want to be PM but I bet he didn't want to do it now, sorting out the almighty mess we've been left in, and where the margin between remain and leave was so small. He may well be PM in six months time but he must be pretty certain that in three years time, he'll be voted out by the unhappy tiny minority. The political landscape of this country may well shift considerably and it will not benefit the Tory party.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 15:44

I hope his time at the helm gives him gout and ulcers and ends in giant disaster.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 15:44

Giant disaster for him rather than the country, although disaster for the country is rather more likely I suppose.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/06/2016 15:45

Well hope he feels the pain,,sorry

Grifone · 24/06/2016 15:49

I am gutted for this result and completly agree that those who voted out as a protest against the government have a lot to answer for. I was just talking to a friend in the US. He was hoping to move back to the UK as the company he works for were setting up their European HQ in London. They have now announced they are looking instead to Dublin or Paris. I think we are going to see a lot of this.

Thanks for the link, its interesting. Like so many others, I am still hunting for facts buried under the spin by both sides.

CodewordRochambeau · 24/06/2016 15:59

I don't think Boris believes in Brexit at all.

I think he's an incredibly astute political pragmatist who saw this referendum as a means to get to number 10. It was a huge gamble, and if he had lost he could have ended his career, but in winning he will in all likelihood be our next PM.

cressetmama · 24/06/2016 16:03

Doesn't there have to be an exporter involved somewhere...... before manufactured goods can be imported elsewhere?

And yes, of course the banks can relocate to Dublin. Some probably will, primarily HQ/accounting teams; probably fewer operations and back office staff. (Think of the relocation expenses!)

I voted yesterday with very mixed feelings; sadly, there was no box marked "Remain but with serious reform".

You will not find much sympathy in the rural/coastal SW for bankers and politicians. Cornwall continues to be the second poorest region of the UK, after West Wales. The much talked about EU investment here seems to have gone (frequently but not exclusively) into building white elephants (empty) industrial estates which the developers would now like to sell on. Having explored the possibility of seeking EU funding for a job creating project, and seeing the mountain of paperwork that would have been required for compliance, it's not difficult to comprehend that SMEs are at a disadvantage. As most jobs are with SMEs, which find themselves disproportionately burdened with form-filling relative to their economic scale, it's actually surprising that so many jobs are generated.

thebestfurchinchilla · 24/06/2016 16:08

The racist claims do make me laugh. Gisela Stuart? Mrs farage? German, I think you'll find.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 16:08

It was a huge gamble, and if he had lost he could have ended his career, but in winning he will in all likelihood be our next PM.

He'll get to No.10 but it may turn out to be a poisoned chalice if the web of lies and promises blows up in his face. He has many enemies in the Tory Party and knives will be sharpening from day one.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 16:10

Because Farage is married to a white German that means he can't be racist? Confused

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2016 16:11

He and his wife are of the same race.

gotnewplates · 24/06/2016 16:12

My DH just received an email from his employer saying that that the leading UK universities will now loose out on half a billion £££ in research grants per year.

Hurrah, these were grants facilitating research into cancer, infectious disease, gene therapy.... who needs them when the 'working classes' have finally a 'voice'.

I'd say OP YANBU. Who can be so dumb to cast a vote and think it doesn't count? It beggars belief.

I agree with all the intelligent posters on this thread, who also happen to be remainers so many kind and smart contributions. At least if the UK doesn't want me anymore, MN will remain my spiritual home, which I can luckily access form any other European country should I be sent home after 20 years of building a life here, being a high tax payer etc., so not all is bad.

BertrandRussell · 24/06/2016 16:13

"The racist claims do make me laugh. Gisela Stuart? Mrs farage? German, I think you'll find."

Sorry? You don't think Gremans can be racist?
