Brexit

to think the Remainers aren't going to take this lying down and we won't leave

A million plus more people voted leave than remain but still over 16 million voted in. And many of the people this will affect - the under 18s - didn't get a say.

The majority of our elected representatives want us to remain as does our capital city.

The EU wants us to remain and once the leaders have stopped throwing their toys around they will realise they need to reform the EU and make changes that will keep UK and all the other eurosceptic people in.

Today has been a body blow for us remainers but, we're shot of Cameron, so we can re-group and start the fight to remain in the EU but with changes that much of Europe wants.

Whichever way London voted, you can bet there are a lot of people in the city making a lot of money out of the turmoil today!

branofthemist · 24/06/2016 12:34

A couple of % is not a mandate to crash the economy and fuel the rise of nationalism across Europe.

You can't move the goal posts after the vote, because we didn't get what we wanted.

It make a mockery of democracy. It was clear. A question and whatever the majority of voters, voted for would be what happens.

Out won, unfortunately, but refusing to accept it is the start of a slippery slope for democracy.

Regardless of how we voted, it is what it is and we all have to get on and make it work. Fighting about it is just going to make the rest of the world lack confidence in us. We have to take the decision and move forward with it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2016 12:41

It's amazing how little democracy means to people when they don't get their own way

Well said ... somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall remainers insisting there'd have to be another vote if they'd "only" got the 52% they expected Hmm

Ailicece · 24/06/2016 12:42

It isn't democracy when the entire winning campaign was based on a pack of (proven) lies! I'm hoping there will be a legal challenge of the result.

Completely agree.

PaulDacreCuntyMcCuntFace · 24/06/2016 12:42

I voted to Remain. I am disappointed. But that's democracy - someone has to come second (and third, fourth and so on).

I categorically want to see appropriate steps taken towards a managed exit in a measured and sensible fashion. Do I agree with this? No. But it's what the majority voted for.

You also need to bear in mind that there is no guarantee that the EU will roll over and allow GB to negotiate much better terms just to get them to stay in. If they do this then it sets a precedent for every single EU member to threaten a referendum so that they can do the same.

I wanted Scotland to stay in the UK but actually agree with Nicola Sturgeon that it's appropriate for IndyRef2 - and it's because of today's result. Part of the positives for Scotland for staying in during IndyRef1 was that if iScotland became a reality, then they would no longer be in the EU and would have to petition to enter and adopt the single currency. By remaining in the UK they maintained their EU membership.

Now that Scotland has categorically voted to remain in the EU but England and Wales has voted leave, it's reasonable to say that there's been a material change which should prompt another referendum. That's exactly why the SNP campaigned on that basis during the recent election and why agreements were drafted with 'material changes' in place.

This was always the danger of a leave result. I think we are seeing the first day of the breakup of the UK; Sinn Fein posted a statement this morning saying they felt there was a strong case for looking at a united Ireland again.

branofthemist · 24/06/2016 12:43

You can't say 2% isn't enough after the vote.

It wasn't 2% either. There is 4% difference. Is that classed as enough.

I wanted to remain. I really did. But I think trying to wriggle out of this would damage the country further.

And I can't imagine the brexiters taking that lying down either.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 24/06/2016 12:44

Apparently there's a petition going, to do with turnout and percentage of votes.

My Goodness, who could have seen that coming...but don't worry Boris, no need for haste, plenty of time to concentrate on redecorating number 10, although apparently the kitchen is quite nice.

temporaryusername · 24/06/2016 12:45

Can't find a link, but I think Farage did say that if Remain won with only 52 % or similar it would not be enough and there would have to be a second vote.

Crinkle77 · 24/06/2016 12:46

I am a remainer but I think we have to go with the majority. If we don't there could be major civil unrest and ultimately further division which I don't want.

merrymouse · 24/06/2016 12:47

I agree Crinkle. I think not accepting the vote of the referendum would just play into the hands of the extreme right. People have voted for this, now they have to try living with it.

WinnieFosterTether · 24/06/2016 12:47

Quite. When I went to bed at 1am, Farage had conceded and there were no claims for another referendum because of the narrow margin. When I got up at 7am, Leave had won and suddenly there are petitions and campaigns.

Of course those petitioning for a different result are so confident in their superiority and arrogance, that they can't even see they are denigrating both democracy and the electorate. I had hoped Britain was better than this. . .and actually I still hope that maybe the parts of it that aren't on social media, are better than this.

this ^^

alteredimages · 24/06/2016 12:50

Enough with the conspiracy theories already. We voted out and we will go out. I am a remainer but the consequences of parliament disregarding the results of the referendum and the precedent that sets is more dangerous IMO that leaving the EU.

Still really pissed off at Cameron calling the referendum in the first place and not putting any safeguards in place regarding the majority or turnout.

TwoLittleBlooms · 24/06/2016 12:50

I am a remainer and I am very sad with the results of the vote (obviously!) I am hoping that the brexiters will be given what they want - the government taking charge (and overturning the result). 650 MPs - majority if I am not mistaken are Europhiles - if voted on in Parliament it could well be overturned. There is also currently a petition to call for a new referendum.

StillDrSethHazlittMD · 24/06/2016 12:53

I hear what you're saying about democracy. But it's hard to accept a vote when the Leave campaign told outright lies to get that vote. There are already people who voted Leave who said they wish they hadn't - there was one interviewed this morning on BBC and another on ITV. They expected Remain to win and are now "shocked and worried" (in the one chap's words).

So we will now have Boris as PM in a leadership contest and a situation a la Gordon Brown where we have a PM for three years we didn't vote for. Scotland will vote for independence, Ireland will erupt over unification etc etc

Put the "Great" back into Britain, they said. There won't be a Britain in a couple of years but three or four totally separate entities.

LineyReborn · 24/06/2016 12:53

There are people in Wales and Cornwall who voted Leave based on a false belief that the EU money their communities depend on would be replaced by the UK in the event of Brexit.

That money is not going to be replaced.

They were duped, basically.

That isn't democracy, and I think a lot of those people will be bloody horrified when they realise what is now going to happen under Cameron's successor.

Twinkie1 · 24/06/2016 12:54

So fat people or people who drink or smoke or have life limiting conditions shouldn't be able to vote because the odds on them being around for the long run are low? Or is it just ok to be ageist now?

merrymouse · 24/06/2016 12:54

650 MPs - majority if I am not mistaken are Europhiles - if voted on in Parliament it could well be overturned.

And imagine what will happen to those Europhiles at the next general election if they ignore the results of the referendum. The result could be very, very scary indeed.

ginnybag · 24/06/2016 12:57

I voted Remain, but I've said it in person this morning and I'll say it again here:

We Leave, and we leave as quickly as we can reasonably manage. That was the majority vote, and that's how it works. Any Government which ignores that is on a very slippery slope in my eyes.

... Whether there should be a change in how we vote in future is a different equation. For a start, it's past time it was done electronically, and I've long thought that people shouldn't need to report to specific polling stations. I'm not even convinced that a single day is valid now - too much chance of one off events like flooding or bad weather etc affecting the results.

Rebecca2014 · 24/06/2016 12:58

Vile people the remain camp are turning out to be. You are behaving appalling. You lost by well over a million votes, YOU LOST. Its democracy, not just for you elites/middle class but for all of us, we all have a vote so just because you don't like it doesn't mean we should all vote again.

Ginmakesitallok · 24/06/2016 12:59

Even some brexiteers don't think we'll actually leave. Some woman was on bbc scotland saying that article 50 won't be engaged immediately, eu will reform, and then there'll be another vote and we'll all vote to stay in....

Stupid cow.
