To point out that not ALL people who voted leave are racist

I'd describe myself as extreme left. I voted leave because the EU's undemocratic. Today I wake up to ALL of my Facebook posting statuses about how they feel sick etc. all my friends are liberal, some of them would hate me if they knew. But if I was asked outright I'd probably be honest. I've made new friends recently who would definitely never speak to me again if they knew though. I feel like everyone who voted leave has been branded a racist. I feel uncomfortable that probably lots of them are sad I feel very uneasy being lumped in with them and might come to regret my decision

Posted this elsewhere but in need of some hand holding I think! Or maybe someone who feels the same way? Anyone?

And why is it funny that your vote has put the next generations' future in jeopardy? Sorry, really can't see where the humour is in that. What a nice person you must be.

thecook · 28/06/2016 10:49

You want to take the moral high ground with racism on the increase and the country heading into another recession because of your vote. Well, whatever helps you sleep at night, love

I don't have any problems sleeping at night. I don't think there will be another recession. If there is, so be it. I am from the north love. I know what unemployment is. I remember visiting the Job Centre in the late eighties and seeing ONE job advertised.

And why is it funny that your vote has put the next generations' future in jeopardy? Sorry, really can't see where the humour is in that. What a nice person you must be

Er, do you know me? Goodness gracious, such bitchiness. You must be another SAHM with nothing better to do.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/06/2016 10:51

A Remain vote would give us a mandate to try & properly reform with the support of other countries

If I honestly thought that was a possibility I might well have voted Remain myself - but it's not, is it? So called "reforms" have failed time and again, and now many of us feel the corruption, lack of accountability and sheer bloody mindedness of the EU project is way beyond any real reform

Whether it can continue in its present state remains to be seen, but frankly I'm not confident

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 11:03

'Er, do you know me? ... You must be another SAHM with nothing better to do.'

Were you being intentionally ironic?! Lol! GrinGrinGrin

BTW Where you're from really isn't relevant to this conversation. But having had that experience re the job centre, one would hope you would have a bit more compassion and not wish that on your fellow country-people.

I'm guessing you were one of the people who was using this as a protest vote against the establishment though (giving you the benefit of the doubt), and I do feel very sad and sorry that you felt siding with the far right and putting your faith in people like Farage and Johnson was the way to go :(

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 11:06

(In case you hadn't realised yet, Johnson and Farage really don't care about the working classes. They were educated at public schools and are millionaires, and you have just handed them the keys to the kingdom at your, your family's and other ordinary people's own expense. And all those things they promised you in their campaign - they ain't gonna come true.)

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 11:10

*Me: And why is it funny that your vote has put the next generations' future in jeopardy? Sorry, really can't see where the humour is in that. What a nice person you must be.

You: Er, do you know me?*

I quote from you:
'The funniest statements I see from the Remain camp are the poor souls that state 'You have ruined by daughters/sons future''

I did not use my vote as a protest love.

I was just pissed off with the EU as a body in general - the final straw for me was when they banned mothballs containing naphthalene. Oh and various household cleaners. And following their directive the Government banned the import of 100W light bulbs. I have to go out of my way to find them now. I refuse to buy any other type.

Good to know you based your vote on such important matters - that's really reassuring.

Do you roll up 5 pound notes to light your aga maybe? Grin

There are lots of alternatives that are as bright, why do we need over designed devices. This drives companies to innovate!

Its almost as bad as the George Bush years where car manufactures made cars heavier on purpose to be classed as industrial so they payed low tax - to hell with MPG and emmisions.

thecook · 28/06/2016 11:35

When you voted Leave you voted for what was best for you. Yep, so did I. I am pissed off with EU interference. I voted leave because of it. Nothing wrong with that.

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 11:39

Naphthalene is carcinogenic. Ever considered that maybe the EU regulations exist for a reason?! I despair!

thecook · 28/06/2016 11:46

Do you roll up 5 pound notes to light your aga maybe?

I wish I had room for an aga! I haven't found any decent alternatives to 100W light bulbs. You can get 4 for a quid in Kilburn! A fella from the council came round distributing a 'green' alternative just after the import ban. I gave them a try but I had problems reading as the light was so poor. I soon whipped them out and replaced them with 100W ones.

Then the EU banned powerful vacuums cleaners. I don't know what to do when mine packs in.

Then they banned those circular crystal toilet disinfectant blocks because they said they were highly toxic. I don't care about that, they leave your bathroom smelling so fresh!

So that is why I voted leave Smile

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 11:49

Can't work out if you're actually serious or taking the piss?!

merrymouse · 28/06/2016 12:02

manufacturers selling to the EU have to produce products that comply with EU regulations, and EU regulations tend to be in line with concerns about health and the environment that the UK shares, and would enact anyway.

There is unlikely to be much change outside the EU.

thecook · 28/06/2016 12:05

Naphthalene is carcinogenic - yeah I know that. I lost a load of vintage 1950's cardigans during a moth infestation. Sod them cedar balls - they aren't as good as the naphthalene ones.

I can assure you I am serious. I even persuaded a couple of women in my office to vote leave on that basis (knowing one of them had a cleaning obsession).

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 12:05

This is why it should never have gone to a referendum: because people like this will vote on their country's future on the basis of lightbulbs and mothballs (they apparently don't care about their health or the environment). And without realising, as you say merrymouse that those regulations will have to be followed anyway! Dear oh dear.

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 12:07

This has got to be a pisstake!? No one is really that stupid?!

BreakingDad77 · 28/06/2016 12:09

A little off track but LED lighting can be very bright - I was amazed at the difference in lighting and its less electricity and they have lasted much longer than halogen.

Those early power saving bulbs were crap, stuff has moved on a lot.

thecook · 28/06/2016 12:16

It was the implementing of the regulations that pissed me off. And traders in my London borough take no notice of them anyway. You can still get the aforementioned banned mothballs. I am having trouble finding the crystal toilet cleaner although I did manage to get a pack on a local market. Unfortunately when I returned to replenish supplies the poor market trader had been visited by Trading Standards!

It went to a referendum. You lost.

Get over it.

BreakingDad77 · 28/06/2016 12:22

It went to a referendum. You lost

Well just keep telling yourself that ;)

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 12:35

Haha Breakingdad - it's true. We have had some extremely bright ones. When thecook is out of a job, can't get any treatment on the NHS, etc etc, and then realises she could have got bright light bulbs after all, she's going to be kicking herself!!! GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Though I'm still certain she's having a laugh! It's that or she's thick as pig's poo! Grin

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 12:37

(p.s. did you take in the fact that those pesky regulations - that you threw your country's future away over - are still going to be in place if we want to continue trading with the EU? So your poor old cardigans are still going to get chomped on by those annoying old moths. Lol!!! You have at least given me something to laugh about in the midst of all this mess! Thanks! Smile)

virtualrach · 28/06/2016 12:42

Did you read that blog I posted? I think you need to learn a bit about democracy (along with a lot of other stuff from the sounds of it):

'people telling me that this is democracy and I have to live with it. You know what? The referendum vote was simply one part of the democratic process, and as I keep mentioning to those who conveniently forget it, it was ‘Advisory,’ not legally binding. The vote itself is not ‘democracy’. Democracy doesn’t happen on one day for one vote and then go away again. Democracy is an ongoing process in which we are free to express ourselves however we see fit as long as we do not descend into hate speech (which I haven’t). Democracy is part of a process and is happening all the time. I have the democratic right to fight against decisions made on my behalf that I don’t like, and I don’t like this one, so I am fighting it every step of the way. Do not throw the word democracy in my face. It is not a trump card.'

merrymouse · 28/06/2016 12:49

So it's not the fact that there were regulations that annoyed you, it was the fact that they were implemented as part of an agreement between all the countries in the EU which made it easier for them to trade with each other and for other countries to trade with them?

I'm sure there will always be dodgy products available in markets everywhere. However the logic of sharing common regulations and stopping companies from selling carcinogenic products isn't going to go away, which is one of the many reasons that it looks as though being outside the EU is going to look alot like being inside the EU. Except no veto. And no seat at the important meetings, just maybe sharing a coffee with Norway.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 28/06/2016 13:07

I would say two things to Leave voters:

  1. Stop whinging and get cracking with supporting those with a plan. You got what you wanted, now get on with the next stage. Sitting around complaining about 'attitudes' towards you makes you look a bit like Boris.
  1. The Leave campaign has incurred a great deal of racism that is now seen as acceptable by many. That's the dangerous problem and tragic fallout of all this, not how anyone sees the Leave voters. You may not care much about acting kindly towards the rest of the world, but you have a duty to help care for whoever is in your country now. There's a huge amount of healing to be done for the real victims of all this and it's a great shame that many of you see this as acceptable collateral damage while people hating you is the real problem. It's not. You'll be fine. It's the Brits who are scared to leave the house without their passport that you should be worrying about, or the immigrants getting abusive messages through their letterbox.
