To point out that not ALL people who voted leave are racist

I'd describe myself as extreme left. I voted leave because the EU's undemocratic. Today I wake up to ALL of my Facebook posting statuses about how they feel sick etc. all my friends are liberal, some of them would hate me if they knew. But if I was asked outright I'd probably be honest. I've made new friends recently who would definitely never speak to me again if they knew though. I feel like everyone who voted leave has been branded a racist. I feel uncomfortable that probably lots of them are sad I feel very uneasy being lumped in with them and might come to regret my decision

Posted this elsewhere but in need of some hand holding I think! Or maybe someone who feels the same way? Anyone?

So are you going to vote to leave your county council then? After all thats a lot of serious day to day decisions being made about your life by unelected individuals

Hughes32 · 24/06/2016 09:12

Of course not all people who voted to leave did it because they are racist but let's face it, some did. My family for one (I'm ashamed) hate the fact there are so many foreigners coming over and are either taking our jobs or simply just claiming benefits. They didn't hide the their reasons for voting leave which I suppose is something, they told the truth. But some people who are against immigration and possibly quite racist aren't going to admit it are they, and will use every excuse under the sun to justify their choice to leave to their friends and family.

Kimononono · 24/06/2016 09:13

........But not a single racist voted REMAIN

So that makes you guilty by association? Riiiiiight......

Why all the name calling from the remain side? Sure they would like it if leavers started calling them scaredy cats, hysterical, brain washed, pearl clutchers...

someonestolemynick · 24/06/2016 09:13

"I'm not racist but..."
I can't think of a good reason to vote out but xenophobia or extreme naivety.

ExConstance · 24/06/2016 09:14

Nigel Farage said this morning that people in deprived areas were congratulating him because the current government had screwed them over -not an EU matter. Flow chart now:

  1. Cameron has resigned, Brexit supporting right winger will be next Conservative pm.
  2. No effective Labour challenge - even if they get a new leader they are too far behind.
  3. People in deprived areas get screed over some more.
Those of us who need stability for our pension pots in the run up to retirement will now have to wait even longer and save more. Thank you OP for your illogical decision that will wreck mine and my children's futures, make public services even worse and do nothing to lessen the burden of the poorest in society.
BarbaraofSeville · 24/06/2016 09:14

Oh yes, the foreigners that are simultaneously taking all the jobs and sitting in council houses on benefits Hmm.

Dawndonnaagain · 24/06/2016 09:14

The EU only votes on what unelected people decide to bring to the table. That isn't democratic I'm afriad.
How the bloody hell do you think parliament works?

LostSoreConfused · 24/06/2016 09:15

Schrodingers immigrant Barbara

Pisssssedofff · 24/06/2016 09:16

I think today gives us an understanding of how the average German felt the day Adolf hitler was democratically voted into power. Hope to god I'm being over dramatic but you can now imagine that sick to the stomach feeling

HumphreyCobblers · 24/06/2016 09:16

"Sure, you might have other reasons for voting leave that racism, but racism didn't matter enough to you to vote remain."

This is so wrong. I believe in democracy. I am not racist.

I could just as well say to you that democracy is not important enough to you to vote leave. Would you vote for a dictator, even if they were not racist?

I cannot help the fact that racist people voted a certain way. I would not change my strongly held beliefs in order to virtue signal that I am not a racist, when I know I am not a racist.

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 24/06/2016 09:17

someone I've already given my reason. Twice. It's your (collective) failure to acknowledge what I'm saying that isolates leave voters and closes down communication. It's that failure to acknowledge my reason that makes me feel like shit and at the same time makes me wonder if maybe I'm too left wing to talk to you. It's that failure to acknowledge what I'm saying that stops any sort of rational discussion

Too left wing = bit tongue in cheek. Trying to stay cheery!

I am sick and tired of hearing that leave voters are racist. I am the child of a first generation immigrant and British born person. I am not white. My children are not white. I voted leave, because it is common sense that an uncontrolled immigration policy has had an affect on services within in the UK. The remain party have continuously pressed the economy as the marker as to why the public should vote remain, as well as pushing this notion of the xenophobic leave voter. Why can't 48% of this country understand that many people in this country do not live in these financial epicentres within the country, London in particular. We do not see or experience the wealth of these epicentres, but we do see and experience a loss of public services especially over the last 15 years and common sense would link this to the seismic shift in immigration, without a controlled immigration policy. Why can't people accept that the people of the UK, of varying ethnic backgrounds voted leave for what I believe are reasons of common sense

TheDowagerCuntess · 24/06/2016 09:19

You got what you wanted, and you're complaining, OP?

notamummy10 · 24/06/2016 09:19

I agree, you all aren't racist! But racists would have voted for leave. My mum and brother both voted for leave, purely to do with immigration and the economy...

HumphreyCobblers · 24/06/2016 09:19

"Yup. People don't complain that all the uk civil service workers aren't elected.

Hypocrisy - or just plain ignorance - at it's finest."

Err - the civil service don't dictate policy.

EsmeraldaEllaBella · 24/06/2016 09:20

How parliament works is something else that needs drastic change imo

ptumbi · 24/06/2016 09:21

1. Cameron has resigned, Brexit supporting right winger will be next Conservative pm. - that'll be Boris, then? Angry
2. No effective Labour challenge - even if they get a new leader they are too far behind. - so, when Boris is chucked out for being stupid and ineffectual, the next possiblity is Farage?

And with Trump (another stupid, racist white man) on the other side of the pond, what then?

All the brightest kids will leave, for the jobs. Al the 'foreigners' will go back or leave for work. We'll be left with the lazy, ill-educated youth with no jobs, no money, no hope - and that is a breeding ground for radicalisation, division, - and cannon-fodder.

I hope I'm just panicking. Sad

Helmetbymidnight · 24/06/2016 09:22

So as a well-educated far-left person you anticipated by getting out the EU, we will see a great increase in democracy, social justice, distribution of wealth, and a solution to Syria and Palestinian problems.

I do find that rationale hard to believe.

MessedUpWheelieBin · 24/06/2016 09:25

I know two people who voted out because they want to be part of Europe for safety, but are terrified of moves to create a European army 'to stand up to Putin' and what will happen with NATO.
They're horrified at the smear campaign now being waged against anyone who voted out.
I may not agree with their choices, but I'm certainly not calling them racists, especially given their family backgrounds.

wasonthelist · 24/06/2016 09:28

Esmeralda

I am with you, pretty much on every point. My vote to leave was founded on a good deal of research, and primarliy on the serious democratic deficit, but also on the madness that is in an institution that has to decamp from it's HQ to a totally different city periodically for reasons no-one can explain. That's a small point, but it's emblematic.

If people wish to accuse me of being xenophobic, short sighted, racist, too wealthy, too white etc that's their problem, but writing off 52% of your fellow voters like that is hardly outward looking and inclusive.

99% of my Facebook feed is just full of people being gratuitously nasty - but we're the bigots?

I voted with Dennis Skinner, Gisele Stuart, Kate Hoey and John Mann and others, not Boris and Farage.

LifeIsGoodish · 24/06/2016 09:30

Unfortunately, whatever your reasons for Leaving, whatever your personal philosophy and moral/ethical way of life, by voting Leave you hand over the power to people who are racist and xenophobic.

Theonslostbits · 24/06/2016 09:31

I find it patronising that we are branded racist. The british people who voted are a variety of colours and creeds. I voted leave as I want britain to be in control of britain. I am a labour voter and feel very optimistic for the next british election :) 52% of us are not racist

LuckyBitches · 24/06/2016 09:33

This.

Binkybix · 24/06/2016 09:33

Honestly, I think you should stop it with your self indulgent hand wringing.
