I think a small margin for Remain is looking most likely but it's by no means a done deal.

The City certainly seems to be betting on remain, probably on the basis of private polling, which is somewhat reassuring. But we've all been here before ...

OrangesandLemonsNow · 21/06/2016 15:00

Latest poll out today has leave ahead.

This is just so unpredictable.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 21/06/2016 15:03

Sorry got it wrong...

Remain head but leave gaining ground.

Chalalala · 21/06/2016 15:05

I think there are three very recent polls, one with Leave slightly ahead, one with Remain slightly ahead, and one tied?..

Way too close for comfort. Whichever result you're hoping for!

NewLife4Me · 21/06/2016 15:12

I think the result will be exactly what the government want it to be.
The same as the general election and any other election.

Why would they do what they didn't want to do? Confused

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/06/2016 15:14

Why would you think labour would let the Tories win in the ge NewLife? It's not rigged if that's your suggestion.

Christ those polls are close. Is it just going to be sbout who turns up on the day? Confused

SapphireStrange · 21/06/2016 15:14

What do you mean, NewLife?

shinytorch2 · 21/06/2016 15:16

Is that private polling amongst themselves whilst quaffing champagne at lunchtime.....?!

SapphireStrange · 21/06/2016 15:16

Is that private polling amongst themselves whilst quaffing champagne at lunchtime.....?!

Yes, that's how everyone in the City spends their time. Confused Grin

I've lived and worked in places where the fairness of elections really is in doubt and frankly it's an insult to everyone who works to promote democracy suggest this is the case in the UK; there are so many safeguards to stop this happening that is genuinely is impossible. Several people just on this website have talked about their own role at counts. It really is ludicrous to suggest literally tens of thousands of people and observers are bent.

shinytorch2 · 21/06/2016 15:23

I know Sapphire, I used to work there ! Grin Wink

squoosh · 21/06/2016 15:24

I think it will mimic the Scottish referendum. 55 Remain/45 Leave.

SapphireStrange · 21/06/2016 15:26

shiny, so did my DP and so do lots of people I know. Nary a champagne lunch among them. Maybe they just move in the wrong/right circles.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 15:28

I agree MrsBlackthorn but there are people who will insist no matter how much sense people speak, that M15 will have it rigged, or if you vote using a pencil it will be rubbed out etc. etc.

I really wouldn't be surprised if the vote is to leave, based on the fact that older people are more likely to vote at all and are more likely to vote leave.

Add in the rural tory voters who are also more likely to vote leave (there were a lot of Vote Leave boards up when I was driving around a few rural areas in the last couple of weeks.

And the working class people who have strongly moved from Labour to UKIP over the last few years (we lost our high profile Labour Shadow Minister MP not by people switching to the Conservative winner, but to him losing about a third of his votes to UKIP) and there's a lot of support for the Leave campaign.

I will be voting to remain but will be pleased/relieved and a little surprised if it does go that way.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 15:54

I'm ignoring the polls and putting all my faith in the bookies instead. Much more comforting that way.

flippinada · 21/06/2016 15:55

People are right that older people are most likely to turn out, but I wouldn't assume they are all going to vote leave.

It's true that they are tend to be conservative and cautious - especially when it comes to finances - so I'd hazard a cautious guess that many will vote for the status quo based on that.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 21/06/2016 16:00

People are right that older people are most likely to turn out, but I wouldn't assume they are all going to vote leave.

Them voting leave thoughts has come from all the research and demographic polling and stats.

Based on the people I know it is right. not that it means much

schbittery · 21/06/2016 16:06

i reckon it'll be a narrow win for remain. Most of the noise is coming from firm leavers but i think theres more who will vote remain than might at first be apparent. also many peiple are undecided and when it comes to it are more likely to leave things as they are.

i could be wrong of course. i kind of hope this is what happens as it will give it all a shakeup and give the eu the kick up the butt it probably needs without preciputating the economic doom and gloom so many are predicting.

flippinada · 21/06/2016 16:08

Ah, ok Oranges. Do you know of any good sources about the polling/demographics?

I'm not snarking - it's genuine interest.

IamSlavetotheEU · 21/06/2016 16:23

But we will always be close to Europe we can't not be. People managed it pre EU didn't they?

Before free movement of people I never needed a visa to go to europe.

IamSlavetotheEU · 21/06/2016 16:26

Flipp, I thought DF was a sure remainer, he said said in the Past " its better to be at the table, negotiating, than locked outside the room"

However when I spoke to him recently, ( and no way to change his mind, I would never be so rude or condescending....) He surprised me with his anger at the Remains arguments. He remembers as do many of his generation, life before ever closer union to the EU and we were OK, albeit suffering from war hangover. He is an outer.
