Online polls are notoriously unreliable.

This is all reminding me of the Indyref and people's certainty it would be a Yes landslide.

Salene · 21/06/2016 22:40

See I live in Scotland and in Indy ref only ever seen it be be a very close call with no one able to predict the winner

Just as the results came out to be

I never heard it be said yes would landslide

Maursh · 21/06/2016 22:42

Online polls are notoriously unreliable.

I thought that was the telephone polls.

Besides which, I am talking about the informal polling run by newspapers and websites when you read an article and you voluntarily take part. I think there are a lot of "secret" brexiters who dare not admit it for fear they are branded racist. Weather might affect polling as well - rain forecast, more likely motivated voters will head out and undecided won't bother.

Just my opinion and basis for it anyway

squoosh · 21/06/2016 22:51

Salene I was thinking about people I knew. Especially ones I worked with. A fair number of my colleagues who were very pro Yes saw all the buzz and noise around Yes on social media and genuinely thought it would come true.

flippinada · 21/06/2016 23:02

I remember that that squoosh. Yes completely dominated social media throughout Indyref. If you believed what you read on FB, twitter etc, Yes were going to win with a landslide.

But they didn't and not only that but lost by a wider margin they thought. Despite having a far better campaign than Better Together.

Salene · 21/06/2016 23:02

Yeah squoosh I appreciate you can only pass judgement on what you seen or heard at the time .

I wasn't trying to contradict you as such just meaning it's really hard to judge these things as it all depends on the circle of friends you have, the area you live, what job you do etc

On MN I see a strong remain , on Facebook through my friends and local pages I see a strong out.

I don't think anyone can call this one

Friday is going to be a very interesting day

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/06/2016 23:05

I think leave are gaining momentum again

Remain keep changing tactic yesterday it was the right wing influence and do leavers really want to be associated with them, today it was our national security tomorrow I am guessing back to the economy or pulling apart the leave campaign

The Remain campaign hasn't been well managed, they totally underestimated how many people want change

OrangesandLemonsNow · 21/06/2016 23:10

I wouldn't want to be associated wother Alan Sugar much at the moment if I was them either.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/06/2016 23:12

trust Alan to put his foot in it

OrangesandLemonsNow · 21/06/2016 23:12

I hope remain condemn it.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 23:13

I remember in the last days of the run up to the Indyref the polls had Yes and No as being neck and neck, with Yes even pulling ahead at one stage. The bookies always pointed to a No victory though. So I have a bit more faith in the bookmakers.

squoosh · 21/06/2016 23:15

The Remain campaign hasn't been well managed

I think it's pretty obvious that neither campaign has covered themselves in glory. Both gave masterclasses in how not to make friends and how not to influence anyone.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/06/2016 23:31

Remain didn't think they had to do much

it is leave that has to sell something to the public try to get them on side and take the chance on making a change

neither has been great but Remain campaign has been so badly managed due to them being complacent

squoosh · 21/06/2016 23:33

Well we'll soon find out.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/06/2016 23:37

I think remain will just win

but they should easily win

if it is that close with a high turnout which they are not predicting politics has changed which is good for the people as mp's have been too complacent for too long

annandale · 21/06/2016 23:52

Remain 52%, Leave 48%.

And given the number of posters already saying that it's fixed or corrupt, an almighty bunfight will break out. The most likely person to surf to the top on a tide of buns would be Boris Johnson.

Appletreeblossom123 · 22/06/2016 00:17

Remain 52%, Leave 48%. . (Like the Boris Johnson metaphor, annandale!)

This time last week I would probably have said Leave to win, and I do find it quite scary that, with the polls so close and so many undecided voters, one single major incident could tip the balance one way or another on such an important decision.

In General Elections the "silent" voters are known to be mainly Tory. In this referendum it's much harder to judge which way the silent voters will go, as which is the "socially acceptable" vote depends so much on which circles you move in (as evidenced by the fact that a number of posters have said on other threads that they don't know anyone who is voting Remain/Leave).

annandale · 22/06/2016 00:21

Agree apple. I live in a Remain echo chamber but am not daft enough to think that represents the entire country. Bloke coming in to put some additional signs up at work said today 'oh well it'll all change on Thursday' which made me think 'Oh God there are going to be a lot of surprised and upset people whatever the result'. And a few other things.

I have no time for ditherers.

Chris1234567890 · 22/06/2016 01:52

I agree the remains have got it. Sadly due to the events of the last week, but also to the persistent 'vote leave and you're racist' campaign.
Both of which have absolutely no bearing on the issues re EU membership.

I'll say it one last time, I'm voting leave. I'm not racist, and I'm totally offended at being called one.

I as a leave voter, have been likened to Hitler, the Nazis, because of the necessary desire to control the number of economic migrants entering the country. All discussion/debate regards the economic issues, the self governance issues, the outrageous sanctions imposed on us, have been closed down with shouts of 'racist'.

The remains have no idea the damage they have done by pursuing the 'you're racist' campaign.

12 months ago a minute portion of the population, (check the GE) supported Farage and/or far right politics. (Indeed, Farage didn't even win his own seat) Today the remains would have you believe 50% of the populous are far right skinhead nazi racists, waiting on the docks on Friday morning, waving their racist St George flag, to kick out all 'foreigners

One thing is for certain, the remains have without any restraint, labelled half the electorate racist. And worse, they believe their own spin.

On Friday they will have to work out how they repair that damage. I for one won't ever forget being called a racist. I had the right to vote in a democratic referendum. The remains ensured that vote came with a label.

squoosh · 22/06/2016 02:10

On Friday they will have to work out how they repair that damage.

That's not how it works. Remain isn't one body of people who've all shouted 'racist'. It's your choice whether you sit around in a huff for the rest of your life.

bkgirl · 22/06/2016 02:48

I think we will all have plenty of time to regret either choice since both have their merits and disadvantages. Only hindsight in 50 years could give us most of the answers. One thing I am sure about though - the Euro Army will be announced around the 28th. The EPP are straining at the bit to get on with it. Sadly.

Lynnm63 · 22/06/2016 03:19

I think it'll be close. I think remain might just take it but I hope I'm wrong. I think Jo Cox murder has stalled the leave campaign and some undecideds will vote remain as a tribute to her.
I think a lot of people will be shocked when the Eu army is announced along with the new eu budget which they've shelved until after the referendum. I think we are heading for a recession regardless of the result but those who have believed Cameron and Gideons lies about the economy will be angry but it will be too late then.
I believe if we stay given the shit the Eu will heap on us Labour will be punished by their voters who've been sold a pup. I don't believe Cameron and Osborne expected it to be this close, they assumed they could smear Farage but hadn't banked on Gove and Boris. Labour seem shocked that the labour voters aren't behaving and toeing the party line too.

Limer · 22/06/2016 07:42

Labour seem shocked that the labour voters aren't behaving and toeing the party line too.

The Labour Party have got such short memories. This happened in 2010, when Gordon Brown lost the election due to him calling Gillian Duffy a "bigoted woman" when she expressed concern about EU migrant numbers. They need to listen to their core voters for a change. I bet Jeremy Corbyn's regretting not publicly backing Leave.
