Nothing on here,or am I wrong,I'm a newbie so be patient with me.
Anyhow here goes it's the Referendum on the European Union on the 23 June this year.
I'm voting Leave.
How's about you guys?

Crikey I don't think I will read what Alistair Campbell has to say, that man along with Tony Blair......I will say no more.
Mr Blair has been "advised" to keep quiet on the EU so Mr Cambell is his mouthpiece?
No thank you they had their chance and what a mess they made of it.

OP posts:

Somewhat late to the party here, but I'd like to have a little rant...

I've been hearing a lot from the "out" campaign that "independence has served us well for centuries", "Britain has been standing on its own two feet for 1,000 years", etc.

As a reasoning, I think this is bonkers. Yes, Britain has been around for centuries... (although technically Great Britain only since 1707, but nevermind) But it doesn't mean it was a great place to live in. In the past centuries, glorious sovereign Britain has known civil wars and famines, not to mention three devastating European-wide wars.

A rose-tinted view of the past doesn't help anyone... I'm not saying it's the EU that changed everything (it's not). But in that wonderful mythical past the "out" campaign keeps referring to, the average Briton was much less safe, healthy and wealthy than they are now.

Daisyonthegreen · 17/03/2016 10:01

No one is denying that we have had Civil war, famine etcetera in this country,in fact I am glad you reminded everyone. In the "West" we forget that and are made to feel guilty if we have shelter, warmth and food.I do not feel guilty ,our ancestors did suffer.
Hard won home grown social reform by such luminaries as Florence Nightingale,WE Forster,Mary Wollstonecraft,Earl Grey,Lord Melbourne,Robert Peel,Gladstone,Emmeline Pankhurst,Edwin Chadwick,Robert Owen,Elizabeth Fry,Marie Stopes, etcetera, etcetera are proof perfect that we have had and have talented, intelligent wonderful persons to guard us and deal with our own problems.
We were well able to manage our own affairs and we are able to manage our own affairs. In fact we would be free to MANAGE our own affairs if we freed ourselves of this undemocratic, autocratic, one size fits all EU.
The people who espouse the benefits of Brexit are well educated and do not look back with rose tinted glasses at all.
Forget not that we have NATO also.
However we do wish to be in a Democracy to hire and fire our own lawmakers,to expect OUR elected Parliament to govern us not the EU full of its diktats.
Every 5 years we can vote for a new Government ,not so with the EU bureaucrats ,they stay unelected and in situ.
Money saved £55,000,000 a day would be used to manage OUR own country, manage our own borders,it would enable us to broker our own trade deals in and out of the EU countries.
No ,you make a serious mistake in trying to paint Brexiters backward looking,we want to look forward to a situation where we are in charge of our own affairs, friendly to Europe but free to govern ourselves.
That's progress.
Vote Leave,have faith,be free.

OP posts:
engineersthumb · 17/03/2016 11:58

Faith... that thing you need when you have no facts to back up an argument:)
Ok perhaps a little harsh however theout cacampains main argument seems to "it used to work" missing that the world has changed. At least if we are in the EU we have s voice in the largest regional power base.

Chalalala · 17/03/2016 12:18

"it used to work"

Not only has the world changed, but so has Britain... the perception of Britain as a wealthy world power is based on a) the Industrial Revolution (not happening again), and b) the British Empire (also not happening again).

RockUnit · 17/03/2016 12:35

At least if we are in the EU we have s voice in the largest regional power base.

Do we? The Tories are still talking about a "reformed" EU but where exactly are those so-called reforms?

We seem to have little influence in the EU, Cameron's recent "deal" being an example of how much our "voice" is considered, even when we're thinking we may leave.

Andyhall · 17/03/2016 12:38

We are one of the world's leading economies despite the Eu and not because of it.
The economic arguments of needing to be in the Eu do not stand up to scrutiny.
Then there is the question of ever closer union which will destroy democracy as we know it.
Economic migrants, Turkey, ttip, and security which are equally as important as the economy means that Britain is weaker being in the Eu.
If you vote to remain the pressure on public services will be far greater meaning struggling to get your kids the school of your choice, the hospital appointment you are desperate to get, the housing you require etc.
The roads as if they are not congested enough already will be far worse.
Terror attacks like 7/7 have more chance of succeeding. Our security services are already struggling to keep on top and foil terror plots.
Jobs and wages will be affected in the negative. A surplus of workers forces a shortage of jobs and lower wages.
The repeated attacks on welfare by Osborne means the benefits route will not become an attractive option either.
In truth the Eu is for the multinationals, the bankers and big business.
All profiting off the backs of the ordinary citizen.
Labours stance on this is appalling.

Your simplistic negativity is frightening.Have you no eyes to see we have no influence in the EU,educate yourselves. We are held in contempt if anything.
We will flourish outside of the lumbering dictatorial EU.

There is a PDF on the voteleavetakecontrol.org link .
Should one study the findings it will become clear a leave vote is a very wise vote.
Silly comments on little Englanders are childish and not worthy.A mature response is to study the document .

the poor Little Englanders are going to find out just how little we really are...

We are in Great Britain, not "Little England".

"Britain is the fifth largest economy in the world, the fourth military power, a leading member of the G7 and one of five permanent seat-holders on the UN Security Council" (The Spectator)

If we take this rare opportunity to take back our sovereignty, we'll be in control of our own country, rather than having Brussels tell us what to do as in a "one size fits all" with the rest of the European bloc. We can vote out a UK government which isn't going in a direction this country wants, but this isn't the case with the pseudo-democracy that is the EU.

If the obvious choice is not obvious to you deploy a little common sense together with an impartial commentator like the views of andrew neil who will factually guide you on the important aspects of the referendum.
