I wanted to put this in AIBU but didn't. What subject do you think my Year 9 daughter is NOT studying this year?

you must be mistaken?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 17/11/2008 19:45

I thought it was like a requirement that all children do English and Maths? How can you get a job without an English GCSE? Many jobs specify this.

EachPeachPearMum · 17/11/2008 19:46

How is that possible?

Katerina75 · 17/11/2008 19:47

have you only just found this out?

janeite · 17/11/2008 19:47

It is a legal requirement for them to study English. They almost certainly won't specify lit or lang in Yr 9 though. Are they perhaps calling it Literacy, or "Skills" or something instead? Otherwise I would be livid.

IllegallyBrunette · 17/11/2008 19:48

That is just stupid. So will they not sit their gcse english then ?

GrimmaTheNome · 17/11/2008 19:49

Maybe they figure they get enough language in history etc (my DH says most of his eng. lang came from ace H teacher rather than poor E teacher). But no literature? are they doing shakespeare in drama maybe (clutching at straws here). Poetry by doing Elocution?

Presumably must do Eng again yrs 10 and 11.

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 19:49

sadly yes Katheine75

I asked her what texts they were doing

also .....they are doing 50% year history 50% geography?????

OP posts:
NCbirdy · 17/11/2008 19:50

really?

Katerina75 · 17/11/2008 19:50

that is just bizarre - will you complain?

Katerina75 · 17/11/2008 19:50

that is just bizarre - will you complain?

mysterymoniker · 17/11/2008 19:51

have you looked at her timetable?

Katerina75 · 17/11/2008 19:51

clearly you should complain twice!

pointydog · 17/11/2008 19:51

they must be doing english. Check again. Or phone the school

brimfull · 17/11/2008 19:52

madness

is it meant to improve the standing of the school on the tables

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 19:52

i spend my entire life moaning to her school but they are very - shall we say 'progressive'

OP posts:
ZZZen · 17/11/2008 19:53

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 19:54

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 17/11/2008 19:55

OP posts:
wonderstuff · 17/11/2008 19:56

How on earth can they get away with that? What do you mean 50% History and geography?

asdmumandteacher · 17/11/2008 19:56

Ah yes thats a good way of bumping up GCSE league table results - cut out English and stick Media in instead - good idea...mmmm who said edumacation wasn't being dummed down??????

pointydog · 17/11/2008 19:56

brimfull · 17/11/2008 19:57

asdmumandteacher · 17/11/2008 19:57

IllegallyBrunette · 17/11/2008 19:57

So she will leave school without an English gcse ??

You can't do anything nowadays with english and maths gcses.
