I wanted to put this in AIBU but didn't. What subject do you think my Year 9 daughter is NOT studying this year?

oh, I picked that up wrong. Sorry. I am very surprised they can monkey around with the curriculum like this, then.

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 18/11/2008 22:30

Just out of interest, when you refer to the boys school and the girls school, what sort of school is your DD at? Girls grammar, comprehensive?

Wasn't aware comps tend to be single sex, or is it a Catholic school or faith school?

Just being nosey really. They don't do this sort of thing at the grammar school mine attend I don't think.

cupsoftea · 19/11/2008 09:38

thinking about this thread - what will you do notanotterohappyday?

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 19/11/2008 18:11

It is a state grammar bagsforlife

we are going in to discuss it further but have rallied round a couple of other parents who are equally riled!

Can't believe is state grammar! Prob won't matter in the long run.

Yes, have noticed what you are saying asdmumandteacher!

Its just not often they do this sort of thing at grammar schools. Tend only to do traditional subjects.

NotBigJustBolshy · 19/11/2008 20:17

My dd goes to a middle school (specialising in maths and science) and they have always done the SATs in Yr8, and this is made possible by the fact that the top x% of any year group is working 2 years ahead of the curriculum in some areas (e.g. maths). This means that when they transfer to upper school in Yr9, some of them are ready to take GCSE maths and have more time to play with for other subjects.

I'm trying to remember if I learned anything much in pre-GCSE year English. Certainly can't remember what we might have done for literature (I'm going back 30 years here). I can remember the books I actually read during my teenage - starting from Jane Eyre through lots of Dickens and Austen to Tolstoy ... inspired not by having to study them for school but by the blessed BBC classic serials and having to aquire and greedily read book to find out what happened next before the next episode aired a whole week later.

Skip English lit, watch Andrew Davies instead

twinsetandpearls · 19/11/2008 20:27

This can;t be right schools now declare GCSE results as a fugure including English and Maths meaning your school will declare 0%

GrimmaTheNome · 19/11/2008 20:29

They are skipping yr 9 only NOT GCSE, they will be doing that in due course (if I read correctly)

twinsetandpearls · 19/11/2008 20:39

Sorry posted before reading the whole thread as I was in shock. The cardinal mumsnet sin.

asdmumandteacher · 19/11/2008 21:37

bags - my (lovely) GS has eyes on prize too

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 19/11/2008 22:00

yes you are right Grimma

they WILL do GCSE s but this year they are 'resting' english

I am a real traditionalist and this grieves me

am looking at getting gcse past papers and encouraging the studying of some texts chez nous

they like to think of themselves as very forward thinking as a school and say things like 'we have the OPPOSITE issues to most schools' because they have a very bright intake

imo they do not work them nearly hard enough and churn out a group of cocky relatively lazy girls

DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN

WORDS FAIL ME

THAT SCHOOL SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN

GrimmaTheNome · 19/11/2008 22:08

They should then be dropping English for a year and instead do Latin, Greek, Maths early,so they can do Further Maths (if that exists) and Statistics in the next two years.

And cookery, needlework, 'resistive materials' so they are fully equipped for female life.

[sorry, silly mood on me. Go in and give them hell. They shouldn't do this sort of monkeying around without some prior explanation at least]

NotanOtter · 19/11/2008 22:12
