Working in a top private boarding school with entitled pupils

I work in a top private boarding school. Entitlement off the scale. I cansee why parents pay, however, but the aura of money and the stench if elitism is .. really gross.

But why if you don't like the families and pupils? You aren't forced are you?
Staff discount on their DC's fees?
you would think if you did not like the attitude of the students you wouldn't be interested in having your children educated there.

part of the appeal of the school my dd and her partner chose was the student's behavior during tours and visits.

Light the fuse and walk away style thread.

Loads of teachers have terrible grammar, even English ones. I cringe all the time at the slides at Weekly Briefings - produced by Senior Leadership!

A teacher of my acquaintance thinks it’s St. Pancreas and rest bite, sadly.

Did 7 years in state -- loved it. Here I'm shocked daily by the richness of these families. Its like landing on Mars...

That’s Mars for you. Can be pretty hot tbh 🥵🥵

allthemind · 13/09/2026 23:38

How are they entitled just because their parents are rich? How do they daily demonstrate this sense of entotlement to you?

By not burning when they are clearly on Mars.

that’s the rich and entitled bastards for you

My stepson went to one of the top boarding schools and is now married to a woman he met in Sixth Form (when girls were allowed to join). Both are pleasant down to earth people, both loved their time boarding and made some great friends. I hope their teachers were kinder than you seem to be. If you don’t like your work environment then go back to the state sector. Why did you leave it if you enjoyed it so much?

Is this for first term.
You chose to say yes to work there.

Nimblethimble · 14/09/2026 01:02

I would go back to state schools.

Pensions are significantly better there too.

SuddenlyBecoming · 14/09/2026 01:05

Sure of course you do.

Richness is also a word.

Yes, but it doesn't mean what the OP thinks it means.

Why? I know not all independent schools do now, but mine still uses the TPS and because we’re paid more the pension will reflect that, final salary or career average.

Mine is final salary, because I am old.

Do state schools in academy groups have to use the TPS?

Xanhi · 14/09/2026 05:15

Are you a 5th columnist trying to dismantle the system?

94% of schools are state. Stick to your principles and go and work in one of them. Whinging about private schools but taking their money and enjoying the longer holidays is just embarrassing.

maxslice · 14/09/2026 05:18

YES. Some days it takes all my strength not to say, “Listen, you entitled little shits…” And then they do something incredible, wise, brilliant, kind. And I almost get angry. Like, “How dare you fucking redeem yourself, and deprive me of my righteous indignation!!!”

Surprisingly, it’s not a crime to be rich and privileged. If your students lack common courtesy, respect for others, believe they deserve more consideration than anyone else, that’s a problem and not okay. And learning that those things are not okay should be part of their education. Don’t dismiss or resent them. Find a way to teach them.

Sandynandy · 14/09/2026 05:25

I’ll bite. I also work in a boarding school and it is great. I’ve always worked in the independent sector (5 schools) + another 2 for supply. Across these 7 schools the majority of kids were delightful young people. There is only a small minority who are lazy /arrogant / mean - but that is the case everywhere . The odd kid who demonstrates ‘entitlement’ is generally pretty unpopular. I have never been sworn at, had things thrown in classrooms, felt unsafe, seen a fight , had a child storm out of a lesson or needed to ‘call for backup’. Behaviour is very good and that is a key draw for parents. All the schools worked hard to instill a sense of responsibility and service with a strong positive ethos. Yes parents have high expectations- reasonably so. The kids are well aware that their parents are paying a lot and will say something if they have a poor teacher - they want good grades! IMO our responsibility is to provide excellence and help the pupils become confident young people who achieve their full potential. The fact that their parents are wealthy and choose these schools is not the kids ‘fault’ and they still deserve the best.

There’s zero chance OP works in education because her grammar is appalling

Maybe she teaches Maths or French.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 14/09/2026 07:24

@maxslice Anyone with a degree in French has written esssys in English at uni. I think op works as a boarding assistant.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 14/09/2026 07:42

Of course: these rich people do pay the wages of the op.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 14/09/2026 07:51

Respect works both ways . I went to one of those tops boarding schools and trust me the kids will be able to feel that reaction from you and the contempt. There were so many teachers especially boarding house staff who were just plain nasty and would even make chippy digs

DurhamDime · 13/09/2026 21:55

Reverse snobbery at its finest.

DC go to a top boarding school. (Although they don’t board.)

Huge mix of families from all walks of life.

There was MUCH more cash flashing and entitlement at their state primary (leafy London suburb) than I’ve ever felt from the parents at senior school!

The snobbery in this comment 🤣🤣🤣 . Letting us all know you have a few Bob eh 🫣

MagdaLenor · 14/09/2026 08:12

I wonder if @Greatwiseowlwill be back?
We have questions.

YES. Some days it takes all my strength not to say, “Listen, you entitled little shits…” And then they do something incredible, wise, brilliant, kind. And I almost get angry. Like, “How dare you fucking redeem yourself, and deprive me of my righteous indignation!!!”

But sadly there are entitled little shits in all schools now. I think it’s parenting rather than entirely down to wealth.
