Working in a top private boarding school with entitled pupils

I work in a top private boarding school. Entitlement off the scale. I cansee why parents pay, however, but the aura of money and the stench if elitism is .. really gross.

OP posts:

I'm not sure this is the right job for you. If you take a job at a high fee school the pupils are going to be from wealthy families. That surely can't be a surprise.

I'm really hoping you aren't a teacher.

Guarantee this isn’t a teacher.

Amberlynnswashcloth · 13/09/2026 21:38

Usually boarding schools have a good percentage of pupils from military families with the fees heavily subsidised so not all of them will be wealthy aristocrats.

MyAgileUser · 13/09/2026 21:41

Sorry but i dont’t believe you and you’re just trying to start a goady thread. In my experience the private school kids are getting it from all sides at the moment, their schools, the media, the government,, university admissions, diffrerent entrance fees to eg RSC, everybody always reminding them of their privilege, they’re almost apologising for their bloody existence I am sick of it.

There’s zero chance OP works in education because her grammar is appalling

Maybe OP is dyslexic. It's not a full indicator of intelligence.

I have seen a private school teacher write there for their this week and I AM dyslexic ( and fabulous thank you). That teachers is not thick. Their a level results prove that.

canklesmctacotits · 13/09/2026 21:45

Are you a teacher or staff (admin, kitchens, janitorial etc)?

cleo333 · 13/09/2026 21:47

What sort of things do you see that shows their entitlement ? I once worked in a private mental health unit and one child hammered on a doctors door saying I demand you see me my mum and dad are paying your wages! I was shocked

Shloopie · 13/09/2026 21:47

You've angered the MN collective, OP. You must show more deference to the young earls and viscounts.

You’re in the wrong job!

Reverse snobbery at its finest.

DC go to a top boarding school. (Although they don’t board.)

Huge mix of families from all walks of life.

There was MUCH more cash flashing and entitlement at their state primary (leafy London suburb) than I’ve ever felt from the parents at senior school!

I hope you're not a teacher at this top private boarding school!

Highly unlikely.

The top boarding schools cost around 60k a year.
that’s not exactly the norm is it?

Richness? I think you mean wealth.

Richness is also a word.

MagdaLenor · 13/09/2026 22:11

What's "the stench of elitism"? Can you give examples?

You did choose your job yourself right?
You can get a job in a run down state school if you are keen to explore something new...

I work in a state primary school and there is still a lot of entitlement from parents.

FringedAnd · 13/09/2026 22:25

Take the system down from within!

We certainly don’t pay close to that. I’m aware of the fees listed on the website (as I said l DC don’t board - full day fees are under £40k)

However - many many of DCs friends are on scholarships/bursaries/grandparents money.

There are clearly some VERY wealthy families too, especially amongst the international boarders. But they’re the minority.

YourAmberExpert · 13/09/2026 22:34

Other jobs are available

Twoweeksandcounting · 13/09/2026 22:35

Just for balance, I work in a boarding school (perhaps not a top one, but pretty decent nonetheless!), and the vast majority of the pupils are really lovely, humble and…. normal, for want of a better word! I have worked there for 10+ years and can count on one hand the number of pupils I have taken a dislike to because of their entitled attitude.

Yes, although I didn’t see that level of entitled attitude in any of the students. Perhaps because my school wasn’t top enough, or because I taught a difficult subject.

I worked there for over twenty years before I retired.

ElefantAndCastle · 13/09/2026 18:23

But why if you don't like the families and pupils? You aren't forced are you?

Staff discount on their DC's fees?
