I would like some advice on what I should do. My DD is in Y5, they have finished their end of year tests for Maths and English. The teacher had lost a few of the children's test answer papers, so he has given one of the children the opportunity to do the test again. However, my DD has observed the teacher providing the child who had to do the test again with the answers. Now unsurprisingly, this child has scored 140 out of 140, this child also happens to be the 'teacher's pet'. Where do I go with this information?

If I was in your shoes, I wouldn't bother doing anything. I would just teach your child that they don't always know the full story and to mind their own business.
If and I mean IF something vaguely resembling what you have described happened, then possibly the child who scored well could be the "teacher's pet" as they have horrendous shit going on in their life and need someone to care for them. Ditto for the test - maybe they just needed to feel good about something. Thank goodness for all the amazing teachers all over the world who see beyond the test and look at the child every day!

I honestly couldn't care less if teachers were gossiping about me behind my back if I raised a concern. I would think 'the worse' of them for their lack of professionalism, and I'd imagine they wouldn't care about my thoughts either.

Of course they wouldn’t but they make thank you for the laugh!

Snitches get stitches

What an exceptionally attentive, observant and imaginative 10 yr old you have.

Has she had special coaching, or it is a familial trait?

Jynxed · 01/07/2023 15:46

OP - I seriously think you need to have a think about your sense of perspective.

You have no idea what actually happened and sounds like your DD needs to mind her own business.

The daughter sounds like a girl many years ago who would hang around the classrooms at break 'tidying' but really earwigging on staff conversations then reporting back to her Mum, the Padre's wife. We had great fun with our conversations, a friend who had been widowed very young and was remarrying said how glad she would be to get all three children out of care. Mrs Padre was round to her place that evening.........

CheshireCat1 · 01/07/2023 15:48

I wouldn’t worry about it, it’s year five. Friendly advice, try and chill out about irrelevancies such as this, save your worries for more important things or you’ll end up stressing over everything.

Teacher here, currently limping to the end of term, HUGELY enjoying this thread, thank you for this gift.

FYI don't report it - you'll only come across as a complete tit and make everyone think the worse of you. I highly highly doubt this is true, but even if it is... so what. There are no 'standard' tests in Year 5, it really doesn't matter.

This whole thread reminds me of when our eldest started school and we had to go to the meeting for new intake's parents, even though we both worked in the school she insisted, and the Head told us all Never believe all your child says goes on in school and we'll promise not to believe all what they tell us happens at home!

mindfluff · 01/07/2023 15:52

TM80 · 01/07/2023 12:38

My DD had asked some of her friends outside of the school if they have had end of year tests, and they did and were the same papers!

@Jifmicroliquid, surely the cheating and tampering that you are talking about, shouldn't be allowed

That means your daughter's testimony isn't reliable in general!

For raising a concern? Didn't say it was this concern.

No wonder teachers are thought of badly. It's actually worrying that some are in the job.

I don't know the Y5 kids, but she does from the clubs that she attends.

Love, she is spinning you yarns right, left and centre.

brunettemic · 01/07/2023 15:59

This would be far more of a problem if it actually mattered and the standard end of year 5 test existed. That being said……..REVOLUTION!!! We march on the capital at dawn, take back what is ours by birth right (year 5 years apparently), banish the evil doers to the wild lands and something, something, something. See you at dawn, just outside costa.

ChangeIsInevitable · 01/07/2023 15:59

OP is it possible that your daughter doesn't like the girl as she's a 'teacher's pet'? Or likely that she's saying what she thought she saw but isn't what actually happened?

Brightbear · 01/07/2023 16:00

VasariMichelangelo · 01/07/2023 15:53

Not as worrying as some of the parents who have children!

InSpainTheRain · 01/07/2023 16:02

Write to your MP and tweet Rishi. Or get a grip and think who cares it is year 5.

Maireas · 01/07/2023 16:04

Ok, @brunettemic - I'll see you there. At some point I may have to pop into Tesco because I'm low on Bertolli and dishwasher tablets, but I can certainly man barricades.

Heartfullofcheese · 01/07/2023 16:05

This is clearly bollocks as no teacher has time to sit with a child and help them redo a test. Far too busy at this point in the year. Reports, pupil progress meetings, transition, SEN paperwork, marking tests, end of year stuff. Nah.

ClaraBourne · 01/07/2023 16:19

I'm guessing neither you or your daughter like that kid or the teacher.

holycannaloni · 01/07/2023 16:27

Don’t raise your daughter to be the sort of person always looking for excuses as to why someone is “doing better”. This is a good opportunity to teach her that the only thing that’s important is her own exam results, and if she keeps her eyes in her own lane and she’ll do better.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/07/2023 16:30

Chinny reckon, OP...

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/07/2023 16:33

DragonCatcher · 01/07/2023 12:43

In the UK there is no standard year 5 test I'm afraid to tell you.

There is in Wales, but this story is spurious nonsense, nonetheless...

Simplelobsterhat · 01/07/2023 16:35

There are standardised annual literacy and numeracy tests in Wales at that age, but I believe they are taken online so a paper couldn't be lost.

It's generally best to assume you don't know the full story and there will be reasons behind things your children tell you about school in my experience, unless it's a safeguarding issue or your child is bring harmed.

Thinkingofthings · 01/07/2023 16:36

As others have said end of year tests in year 5 mean nothing except to check whether the kids are on track with their learning. To be honest unless they are really below where they should be then nothing will be done regarding their marks.
Some schools may use the same tests but there is no standard year 5 test. I genuinely wouldnt get myself worked up by this. As others have said, it's very likely you havent got the story quite right here.

DragonCatcher · 01/07/2023 16:38

DragonCatcher · 01/07/2023 16:38

@LadyMonicaBaddingham good to know!
