Shocked by hatred of kids & parents on TES website

I've spent a bit of time reading the TES website which contains threads and postings from teachers and I am stunned by the level of hatred and abuse directed towards students and their parents. I am horrified to think that some of these creatures may actually be teaching my kids!
It appears that the "state of war" we read about it British classrooms is by no means one way traffic - the teachers
seem to relish getting in on the all the drama.

Try and remember that the teachers on TES are a minority. Not all teachers - infact most teachers - are not full of hatred.

But some children and their parents are appalling so surely some of it is justified.

I agree with Xenia - they are letting off steam, I expect. I honestly think that most teachers are NOT full of hatred.

The TES is a forum for teachers to hang out and talk, just like Mumsnet is. And like Mumsnet, this means that you get to see the best and the worst kinds of attitudes expressed. Teachers are no more "creatures" than Mumsnetters sounding off are "creatures" and the views of a minority of people on the TES site are in no way indicative of the general opinion of teachers; just like the odd comments we sometimes get on here are in no way representative of the views of all mothers.

And I happen to really like most of the pupils I teach. I even quite like some of their parents!

Some of it may well be justified but I have never been comfortable with the tes staffroom. It belittles professional integrity.

We are a bunch of individuals on mn. The tes site is seen by the public as representing teachers. Is there a similar public site for doctors, nurses, etc? Bet there isn't.

I agree - the spelling on the TES site is shocking. I've only just come accross MN and, after paging through quite a bit of the Education and Secondary threads, I've not found anything remotely like I read on TES in terms of abuse directed towards teachers. The most popular descriptive word on TES when talking about kids appears to be "feral"- these 23 year old fools with little or no life experience are actually teaching our kids!

i've just been to my ds(14)'s school parent's evening.

i'd probably say walk a mile in their shoes, then judge.

You should read the stuff they say about autism on there. ONe woman (supposed clinical psychologist) won't go to a restaurant in case a severely autistic person comes in (which suggests she knows bugger all about severe autism as the last place you'd find ds1 is in a restaurant).

It's never been a very well paid job. You get what you pay for.

oh Xenia you just can't help yourself can you- there are plenty of able intelligent people who don't give a fig about money and can be found achieving in whatever field they're in; well paid or not.

Xenia - I am not and have never been a teacher, but you do get people who are dedicated to teaching the children no matter what, with passion and professionalism, despite the money.

Thing is...we all need to moan about our jobs. I am sure they don't really hate the kids (parents different ballgame) else they couldn't do the job, but having had a bad day it is easy to log onto a website and moan to other like minded collegues. And when one person starts it is easy to join in.

And the trouble with the TES forum is it is not just teachers that can read it.

Kris007 why where you reading the TES website...I am guessing you are not a teacher?

The TES website did shock me though - especially the stuff about children with SEN (on the general chat bit- the dedicated SN bit was professional and encouraging reading). But that's the problem with inclusion I guess.

I could never be a teacher. Never. I dont think I could cope.

And lets face it- lots of kids in secondary school are feral creatures.

I would rather stick pins into my eyes than teach teenagers. I have the upmost respect for those that teach this age group.

cazzybabs - I read an article in the local paper about a teachers site (tes) where the participants were mocking the names of their students - listing first names that were always bad kids, chav kids, etc. Found the site and was shocked. Agree with yurt1 - the comments on autism found on tes are generally barbaric.

What a crappy post.

I have only been on the TES website a few times but was shocked by one thread I read about behaviour - some posters were rubbishing certain conditions as an excuse for bad behaviour. All of the teachers I work with at the moment work really hard, over and above what they are paid to do,(miaow Xenia)) because they do care greatly about the children they teach.

nearly all the teachers i spoke to tonight complained about mis-behaviour in the classroom. they seem to have no power anymore

It is a terrible site - just read some of the hatred towards TAs - one poster in particular is so scathing in his hatred of the job we do, calling us an uneducated Mums Army of helpers.....I used to post on it now and again, but I just can't be bothered to try and defend myself & other TAs now
