Why is 6th form thought of more highly than attending FE college ?

1000 replies

Summersunshinee · 09/04/2023 17:24

I can never understand why if you say that you attend 6th form at school you are thought of more so than if you attended FE college.

I would feel that if anything it would be more impressive to attend FE college as you made the decision to go somewhere else and try something different /

Its not just this thread Op started same thread a year ago which went on for months

DollyTrolly · 06/07/2023 12:51

I know the OP will probably do their disappearing act again for a few days now but I am intrigued as to what their definition of a normal job is and what I've said to suggest I've never had one 😂😂

PettsWoodParadise · 06/07/2023 13:58

I am leaning more and more to us being part of an AI experiment. Certainly some Lewis Carollesque rabbit hole experience is taki mg place.

TeenDivided · 06/07/2023 14:16

I don't think you could get AI to be this obtuse, could you?

Hey, I want to have a discussion, but I'm not going to listen to any of your points or take notice of your experience, I'm just going to repeat my view ad infinitum.

Unless I suppose you said 'AI please argue for everyone to do practical skills vocational work, in the manner of a child who can't yet reason well'

pointythings · 06/07/2023 14:25

If this is an AI experiment then the A lacks I.

SmartHome · 06/07/2023 14:43

The OP has made 434 very repetitive posts on this thread, all saying pretty much the same thing. It's not normal. You might want to delete this thread Mumsnet as it seems to be stuck in some weird negative feedback loop.

Summersunshinee · 06/07/2023 17:26

@DollyTrolly What i mean is have you worked outside of the education system ?

Have you for example worked in a supermarket, as a cleaner, on a farm, factory or in a call centre ?

@bruffin Whilst I dont doubt a lifeguard can be a lifesaver. Also I forgot to mention earlier I did achieve the bronze medallion when I was a teenager, I doubt its a profession that will produce the next Amazon CEO.

222 not 434 surely?

It's sort of entertaining in a frustrating kind of way.

DollyTrolly · 06/07/2023 17:33

Yes.
I've worked in retail ( small, local shops and large well known department store) I've worked in multiple factories
I've worked in pubs and clubs
I've worked in kitchens

Although, none of those jobs make me more or less qualified to give careers guidance.

That is quite impressive @DollyTrolly

OP - in the face of feedback from all the responders on this thread, coupled with career expertise from @DollyTrolly , why do you still cling to your belief that you are right and everyone else is wrong?

DollyTrolly · 06/07/2023 17:47

You seem to have made some assumptions about me which I think are pretty inaccurate.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2023 18:18

@Summersunshinee remember a lifeguard might save the life of a drowning potential future Amazon CEO.
A person could be totally top of the game when it comes to business - but might not be such a great swimmer.
All different jobs are needed for a good society. Including lifeguards.

Passing your bronze medallion is hardly the same as working as a lifeguard. As an aside my DS was one of the first 13 year olds to pass the BM, as he took it as soon as they changed the age limit.

It was something to earn him money and experience while he was a student and looking for "professional job" He had to be able to handle cheeky and badly behaved children, and stroppy parents who think their dc could do no wrong.

Summersunshinee · 06/07/2023 18:56

@bruffin I`m not saying it is the same and I did mine at 14.

Why didn't your son get a job selling double glazing or cars for example ?

OP posts:
bruffin · 06/07/2023 19:36

There is no way on earth i would have encouraged him to be a salesman. I used to work for a dealership! I knew too many car salesmen!
Why are you so anti Lifeguarding as a job for a student to get money on the side or as you said a fallback while he was waiting for a "career job"

DollyTrolly · 06/07/2023 19:44

What job do you do OP?

Summersunshinee · 06/07/2023 19:50

@bruffin That`s fair. All i was thinking is that would have taught business and negotiation skills.

@DollyTrolly I work for a healthcare provider.

I have worked in sales.

Always been tempted to try selling cars tbh, commission only puts me off abit tho as your income would be uncertain.

Been tempted to try selling DG also.

Not sure it`s like white gold tho

So are other people when they talk about their choices or the choices their children made. Yet you feel it necessary to question and criticise their reasons ...... why?
