Why is 6th form thought of more highly than attending FE college ?

Summersunshinee · 09/04/2023 17:24

I can never understand why if you say that you attend 6th form at school you are thought of more so than if you attended FE college.

I would feel that if anything it would be more impressive to attend FE college as you made the decision to go somewhere else and try something different /

We are allowed to have a debate.

It's not a debate if you refuse to listen to other people.

You can rip apart my responses if you want.
Why would I want to rip apart your responses when you've made a perfectly valid career choice that suits you?

pointythings · 06/07/2023 21:00

It would just be nice if you could show the same respect to other (academic) choices that we have shown yours.

I have only asked why other routes weren't taken and if you could have been more persuasive.

OK, so if you had children who really wanted the vocational track and had all the skills and talents in the world, would you push them towards another route - the academic one?

I would ask them to go to open/taster days at academic institutions so they could make up their own mind.

When I talked about persuasive I was talking more choosing college for academic study over 6th form.

You haven't been very respectful in the way you've expressed your views.
I've found you quite offensive on a number of occasions if I'm honest 🤷🏼‍♀️

Offensive how ?

You've repeatedly questioned my ability to do my job and my level of professionalism. You've demanded I prove to you that I have supported young people into vocational options and then not bothered to reply when I've taken the time to respond.

In fact, at times you've just been plain rude.

I have just been sceptical about careers advice in the past.

Fair enough. Hopefully my posts have changed your view slightly 🤷🏼‍♀️

@DollyTrolly I admit it have been interesting to learn how careers advice is delivered today.

@DollyTrolly Out of pure interest do you ever advise someone to become a nurse or secretary ?

I think you misunderstand what the role of a careers adviser is. We don't tell people what to do...... people tell US what they are interested in and we support them in making informed decisions.

Anyway, secretary in the traditional sense isn't really a job anymore and I've certainly not come across anyone saying they want to be one when they leave school.
However, nurse is an incredibly popular career choice so I've had lots of young people say they are interested in becoming a nurse.

I have only asked why other routes weren't taken and if you could have been more persuasive.

I think I get it now. The AI isn’t being used to debate the value of HE colleges themselves, it’s being trained on how to debate and pass as a human in an online conversation. All the circular logic, repetitive and poorly structured arguments—the tool is broken, developers! Back to beta testing.

My DC went to college open days as arranged by their school. No intervention from me needed. The visits didn't change their minds. I chose to not be an abusive parent by coercing hem to do so.

TeenDivided · 07/07/2023 07:59

For post 16, a good parent makes sure their child is aware of all suitable options, and discusses pros and cons.

If they already know their child's interests and abilities, that does not need to extend to saying they have to go and visit a plumbing course when their interest is languages.

It could however reasonably extend to visiting other places that offer the desired course, even if the child eventually choose to sty at their current school.

I would have listed the benefits of college over school and changed his mind.

So you would have used coercion and pressure? There's a word for that. Starts with A.

I would have just explained the benefits in an adult way,

@Summersunshinee what do you consider the “benefits” of college over school though?
Other than “meeting new people “ that you said about 5 million posts back.
My 6th Form was actually a combination of people from 3 different schools (my school + the 2 other secondary schools in the area that didn’t have 6th Forms). We also had some who did part time from the Catholic school next door as their 6th Form was small and only offered a small amount of subjects so they did some at their school some at my school.
Well had some who switched from private schools to my school.
Some who had moved house but stayed at their old school to finish GCSEs but now could switch to the “local” school.
One who had a parent as a teacher at the school who switched schools because they came to school in their parents car rather than the parents have to pay bus fairs because they lived in a village and would need to get the bus to their previous school.
My 6th Form was probably about 60%
newcomers.

Why do you need to change peoples minds?

Summersunshinee · 07/07/2023 11:08

@Needmorelego

Benefits of college over 6th form.

Generally you will meet new people.
Greater range of options for study.
No uniform requirements.
Different tutors.
You will be meeting more people your own age an older (no younger kids hanging around).
Colleges generally have better equipment than schools.
If you want to go to university its a good stepping stone between school and university.

To challenge their point of view and promote debate.

@Summersunshinee at my 6th Form…
No uniform (now it’s “business wear” but fairly relaxed)
New people (see above)
Different teachers (some only taught 6th form)
Separate from main school - had very little to do with younger pupils.
Huge selection of subjects included btecs/equivalent
Equipment was no different to the college as the college was quite run down (to be fair it’s been modernised since)
