Why is 6th form thought of more highly than attending FE college ?

1000 replies

Summersunshinee · 09/04/2023 17:24

I can never understand why if you say that you attend 6th form at school you are thought of more so than if you attended FE college.

I would feel that if anything it would be more impressive to attend FE college as you made the decision to go somewhere else and try something different /

@thegreenline why? Why shouldn't a 16 year old make their own choices? There's nothing like making choices and dealing with the consequences to make someone grow up. Helicopter parenting is bad.

It`s about having a debate and opening up a dialogue to see if it really is the right choice.

If only there were professionals employed in schools to do this .......oh wait 🤔

Do you ever encourage anyone to become a builder, electrician, plumber, chef or hgv/bus driver ?

DollyTrolly · 25/07/2023 22:16

I've answered this question multiple times.....
but again, it's not a careers adviser's job to encourage people into particular jobs.

However, if a young person told me they were interested in becoming a builder, electrician, plumber or anything else then I supported them in achieving this goal.

I've supported 100's of young people to access apprenticeships.

thegreenline · 25/07/2023 22:26

@DollyTrolly I bet you give them lip service compared to someone who wants to be a doctor say ?

Again, we've been through this.
I don't because I'm a professional who follows a code of ethics. One of the most important aspects of the code of ethics is impartiality.
I'm a fully paid up member of two professional bodies and I'm on the professional register so I take this very seriously.

You say that but we all know that isn't the truth.

You will always give more encouragement to people who want to study academic subjects and go into careers associated with those.

If someone walks in who wants to be a chef or bus driver for example I bet you wrap things up fairly quickly.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2023 23:06

Round and round and round it goes….
@thegreenline what is your opinion of people who choose a job rather than a career?

If people are out there working, earing money and doing something useful that`s good and all power to them.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2023 23:24

@thegreenline I’m not totally sure if my job was actually useful. I worked in a shop. I sold things. But a vast majority of those things were “nice to have” things people wanted but didn’t really need.
Did I make a good choice?

You got off your backside and did something, did you earn commission ?

Needmorelego · 25/07/2023 23:30

@thegreenline no pretty much minimum wage and crappy hours. Most depressing 20 years of my life.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2023 23:40

@thegreenline to add to my previous comment….
I was over the moon when I finally got to leave my job. I married. I had a baby, became a stay at home parent. Became involved in the local community much more. Volunteering at local school, PTA etc. I (finally) had time to be involved in community based events - some for charity, some for fun.
Not everything is about earning money.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2023 23:41

@thegreenline a person can work very very hard but not be earning money and a large part of society would fall apart without them.

pointythings · 26/07/2023 07:36

Why are you so rude to @DollyTrolly ? You're blatantly accusing her of lying and being unprofessional. Clearly your vocational education didn't teach you manners. My uni educated DC would never behave like you.

DollyTrolly · 26/07/2023 07:39

Absolutely none of this is true.

You need to learn some manners. You're one of the rudest posters I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

grass321 · 26/07/2023 07:49

It's the rudeness combined with the crazy not fit to be called logic. Almost 1,000 posts later and I still have no idea what the OP is trying to achieve.

I worked in investment banking which I loved and was well paid for it. My brother has a degree and MBA and works for minimum wage in a warehouse. My nephew is paid a similar amount and is happy working in security.

My kids want to go into similar fields to myself and my husband but that doesn't mean that they haven't seen the vocational alternatives. They've made their own mind up and we'll support them in that. It's reverse snobbery to suggest that's a bad thing.

I can't remember what job the OP does that has prompted such a lengthy diatribe.

TeenDivided · 26/07/2023 07:53

I wander off for a few days, and come back to 80 new posts!

Thankfully this thread is nearly full.

The OP is so single track, unable & unwilling to see different points of view, and is now being insulting to people who are engaging with them in good faith. They seem to have learned nothing at all, it's almost as if they aren't even trying to understand the point of view of others.

Either incredibly closed minded or without the intellectual ability to understand the discussion properly. Or they have such a giant chip on their shoulder it obscures everything else.

thegreenline · 26/07/2023 08:18

@Needmorelego Money makes the world go round. But if you feel you are contributing to society then that is good.

@DollyTrolly I do apologise if i have been rude to you. I have also said some nice things about you too.

Needmorelego · 26/07/2023 08:23

@thegreenline as this thread is nearly full this is my last post to you…
Please get some therapy for whatever it is that is causing you so much anxiety and stress over the fact you chose College over 6th Form.
Please respect other people’s choices.
Stop obsessing over other people’s choices when they are nothing to do with you.
Please learn that there are many different types of school 6th Forms - they are not all the same.
Ditto colleges.
Have a read about what is on the curriculum in schools because you talk about what “should” be taught when much of that already is.
That’s it I think.
Bye.

DollyTrolly · 26/07/2023 08:26

I do apologise if i have been rude to you. I have also said some nice things about you too.

'If you've been rude to me?' Ha! There is no 'if' you most definitely have been rude.

In some earlier posts you have begrudgingly acknowledged that I have a balanced view of vocational and academic qualifications but then have repeatedly reverted to calling me unprofessional and liar. So which is it?

Actually, I don't care.

The first time you insulted me I told you to stop being a dick. That post got deleted but the advice still stands.

bruffin · 26/07/2023 08:31

OP was probably banned which is why they couldnt sign back in. Unfortunately Isuspect there will be a new thread on exactly the same topic and say exactly the same thing
Thankfully we do have a choice for higher education and not every one's needs are the same and there are a huge variety of "proper jobs" beyond the realms of OP's imagination

pointythings · 26/07/2023 08:42

@bruffin I reckon you nailed it.

flurbubbly · 26/07/2023 13:05

thegreenline · 25/07/2023 21:59

@pointythings Parents should challenge there children's views and show them alternatives also.

But if you know that your teenager is highly intelligent, shows academic aptitude and has a strong interest in medicine, why on earth would you try to discourage them from applying to medical school and urge them to consider bricklaying or hairdressing instead?

flurbubbly · 26/07/2023 13:22

Either incredibly closed minded or without the intellectual ability to understand the discussion properly. Or they have such a giant chip on their shoulder it obscures everything else.

It's the latter. The OP has started numerous former threads which are identical in tone and approach to this one, sharing her substantial negative feelings towards her sister who did A Levels and went on to have a successful career, and sharing how she was treated as lesser/stupid for not doing A Levels. This is a previous OP:

"It was always drummed into me that after GCSE`s that if you are intelligent you went to or stayed at school and went to 6th form depending on your previous circumstances. But if you weren't good enough you went to college instead."
