Why is 6th form thought of more highly than attending FE college ?

1000 replies

Summersunshinee · 09/04/2023 17:24

I can never understand why if you say that you attend 6th form at school you are thought of more so than if you attended FE college.

I would feel that if anything it would be more impressive to attend FE college as you made the decision to go somewhere else and try something different /

@Summersunshinee the Brit school is a specialist school for VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS for children who want to study those subjects 🙄
If a child wants to work with tools they can apply to a STEM specialist school.
The whole point of the 14+ schools are so those who want to specialise in a specific trade can do so early (ie GCSE level) instead of waiting until college age.
I wish there were more of these schools.

What`s wrong with stopping singing and dancing around and picking up some tools or pots & pans instead ?

So in your perfect world: lots of plumbers, engineers, and chefs.

No doctors, lawyers, vets, architects, vaccine developers.
No drama on TV, no musicals in the West End, no prom concerts.

Nope. Doesn't do it for me.

pointythings · 14/06/2023 18:48

If you want tools/pots and pans, you go to a suitable vocational college.

If you want a career in art and music and have the gift, you go to a specialist school like the Brit school.

If you want a career in science, research etc. you do A levels and go to university.

All of these things are needed in society. None is superior to the others.

Summersunshinee · 14/06/2023 18:48

@TeenDivided How so ?

We would have a very well maintained world.

We would have a dull world, devoid of creativity, beauty, culture.

pointythings · 14/06/2023 18:50

Also a world without doctors, architects, teachers etc. would become utterly dysfunctional almost at once.

Needmorelego · 14/06/2023 18:55

@Summersunshinee even in the communist days of the Soviet Union they had theatre, art, dance, sport etc.
Your world sounds depressing.
Have you read much dystopian fiction? You should read The Giver by Lois Lowry. A novel about a perfect well organised society with everyone equal but allocated roles in life at age 12. But even in that (fictional) society they had an ‘Entertainment/Leisure ’ department.

pointythings · 14/06/2023 18:49

Wouldn't stay beautiful for long.

As nobody would have the skills to maintain it.

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 14/06/2023 19:14

@Summersunshinee oh for pity’s sake.
That’s why we have different educational qualifications available.
For those who want a trade (to maintain things).
For those who want to design the things that will need maintaining.
For those that want to make those designs look nice.
For those who need the academic side to become Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, Teachers etc.
For those who want to give entertainment and joy to the community.
You are getting more strange with each post you write.
I am giving up and going off to play with my Lego - which is a STEM thing but also counts as creative so I don’t know if you will approve.

Summersunshinee · 14/06/2023 19:05

Wouldn't stay beautiful for long.

As nobody would have the skills to maintain it.

Which is why we need all of it. Technical, scientific, artistic, the lot. And isn't it great that we can have that instead of focusing on one thing to the exclusion of all else?

Summersunshinee · 14/06/2023 19:27

@Needmorelego As long as your building something useful like a house or bridge.

But nothing useless like a snowman or a pyramid.

Who would design the house and the bridge to make sure they don't fall down?

(This must be a wind up thread. No one can be this daft.)

Nope. Doesn't do it for me.

No engineers in the Brave New Sunshinee World either though. Not once all that useless trigonometry and algebra has been eradicated from the curriculum.🤣
OP, you are as far as I can see the only person on the thread who has advocated the removal of anything from the curriculum. Nobody has said there is no value in vocational training, or that we don't need people to work in practical trades. The only poster who is denigrating other people's choices, interests and talents seems to be you!

Summersunshinee · 14/06/2023 19:35

@MrsAvocet So why aren't more people on here encouraging practical routes ?

Aaaaaand back to the beginning of the thread yet again.
This is one of the most circular threads ever.

I really hope the OP is on a wind up, as otherwise her comprehension and arguing skills are woeful.

OP. Your question has been answered many times on this thread. I suggest you go back and read all 500+ posts and maybe take notes this time.

pointythings · 14/06/2023 19:39

@Summersunshinee because you're already doing that so well that we could never even hope to walk in your shadow?

Yes, that was sarcasm.

Summersunshinee · 14/06/2023 19:57

@TeenDivided Not a wind up, just don`t like 6th form and everything it stands for.

You probably have a different view to me.

@pointythings So sarcastic comments and personal attacks is that all you have ?

They are.
You just can't or won't see it. Literally nobody has said that we don't need plumbers, mechanics etc and the theme of virtually all the posts - except yours - has been that all young people should be supported and have access to good quality education in whichever field they show aptitude and enthusiasm for. I haven't seen a single post where anyone has suggested that they would prevent their child from doing an apprenticeship or studying vocational qualifications instead of A levels/University if that was what they wanted to do, but nobody should deter a child who has the wish and ability to follow a more academic route either. The only person who is repeatedly suggesting limiting the curriculum and pushing pupils down paths they don't want to follow is you.

@Summersunshinee blanket disliking 6th form is pretty awful. Everyone on here is in favour of the right education for each individual child - you are the only person on this thread who holds one particular type of education in complete contempt, and for no good reason.

And yes, it's all I've got left. You've had pages and pages and pages of rational responses from me. It's like bashing my head against a brick wall. All I have left now is the headache. You're not worth any further rational responses from me, so sarcasm it will be from here on in.

Summersunshinee · 14/06/2023 21:57

@pointythings There are plenty of people in this thread who don`t like college and haven't sent their kids to college.

@pointythings There are plenty of people in this thread who don`t like college and haven't sent their kids to college.

None of those people have sent their kids to 6th form because they don't like college. They sent their kids to 6th form because it was right for their kids.

I repeat: you are the only person on this thread who unequivocally hates one particular form of education and believes another is always superior, in all circumstances, for every single young person.

Everyone else believes in horses for courses.

Look, no sarcasm!

There are plenty on here.

People saying that their kids didnt go to college as there was "supposedly nothing their for them" which is rubbish

OP posts:
MrsAvocet · 14/06/2023 22:32

There are plenty of posts where people say things like "The colleges in my area aren't very good ", "The local college doesn't offer the qualifications my child wants to do" , "I don't think college offers any advantages over my child's present school" or just "My child is happy where they are and didn't want to move" all of which are perfectly reasonable points. But unless I have missed it nobody has made sweeping statements like all colleges are rubbish or that they disapprove of all colleges and don't like what they stand for...they are just giving their personal experiences based on their locality and individual circumstances. Places and people vary, that's all.
