Did you wear a school uniform in primary school?

When were you in primary?
Was it state or private?

Most of local state primaries round here have a uniform.
When I was at primary, during the 70s, I didn't know any schools that did, except the private school in town.

Just interested.

Oh, and if you did, what was it like?

Primary 1967-1974 uniform but not optional. We had to wear it for concerts and things like school trips.

Secondary school 1974-1979 uniform but open to even worse fashions than in the 80's. We had pencil skirts, sunray pleat skirts, trevira trousers, hacking jackets. Jumpers and cardigans could be red, black or white so it was a huge mish mash.

DontCallMeSantaBaby · 18/12/2007 22:36

Primary - state - not faith - 1977 (I think) - pretty sure the first school I went to (years 1 to 5 as it'd be now) had a uniform but don't remember what it was, second one (we moved between year 5 and 6) definitely did - red, white grey.

Secondary - state - 1983 - navy blue. Optional blazers, ties optional for girls and compulsory for boys. Had a minimum skirt length until very long skirts became fashionable for a while at which point it acquired a maximum skirt length as well (mid-calf, soo flattering).

Not at primary, yes 11 - 14, and no again at comp.

Uniform makes little difference to 'clothing bullies', they just pick on your pe kit instead. Or the way you fold your socks down. Or the length of your hai, or whether you shave your legs.

My uniform was black skirt or trousers, red logo sweater, and white pique t shirt. Black shoes, and black or white socks.

unknownrebelbang · 18/12/2007 22:43

state primary, for about a year, maybe two.

Vile tie.

smartiejake · 18/12/2007 23:54

State primary but catholic so v. strict on uniform- blazers, berets, caps, short trousers for little boys until year 6 etc.

Krimble · 19/12/2007 00:00

Late 70's scottish state primary, wore uniform (shirt and tie, blazer and correct colour but hand knitted pullover) and even got to wear shorts for PE

discoverlife · 19/12/2007 00:04

Yes State Primary, Grey Skirt or pinefore for girls, trousers for boys. White blouse/shirt with grey cardy/jumper. Boring dull horrid colours. Present Ds wears pillar box red sweatshirts with the school logo on. Nice and bright.

soopermum1 · 19/12/2007 10:16

yep, state school in 70s and 80s, brown skirt, blue shirt, brown and blue tie, brown blazer in both primary and secondary. no alternative. also, back then school uniforms were expensive (ddin't have asda, and if they did they probably wouldn't stock brown) and we all had hand me downs, especially the blazers, i wore my old brothers blazers, must've been a lovely sight

Lauriefairycake · 19/12/2007 10:17

yep, private prep school - dark green

Primary school (private) - deep blue

Primary school state - dark brown

I went to all of them

UnquietDad · 19/12/2007 10:19

State primary 1975-1980. In infants nobody was especially bothered, but in juniors, we wore a grey jumper, grey or white shirt, red (elasticated!) tie and grey or black trousers or shorts. It was enforced, too.

When I look at the baggy "sweatshirt" mess that passes for state school uniform around this city, I wonder if it's time to bring back the old-style tie/short combo for everyone.

gladbag · 19/12/2007 10:20

state primary, 70s, no uniform

(although for some reason I wasn't allowed to wear jeans, my mum's rule)

JoDeeMagi · 19/12/2007 10:22

State Infants, 1972-74, navy uniform with navy/green striped tie (can you imagine trying to put that on at 4 years old).

State Juniors, 1974-78, no uniform at all, what a bunch of scruffs we looked in our class photo.

SatsumaMoon · 19/12/2007 10:24

Yes in Juniors but not infants (but not in the UK...)

chopchopbusybusy · 19/12/2007 10:47

State Primary in the 60's. There was a uniform - grey skirt and green shirt/tie. It was optional, so I only wore it occasionally (probably on school photograph day).

I went to state High School in the 70s. Again, the uniform was not strictly enforced so you I think you can imagine some of the ridiculous 70s outfits we used to get away with wearing

MrsGrinch · 19/12/2007 10:51

60's and 70's stae primary and secondary. No uniform.

It was a feckin nightmare in secondary. I generally wore jeans but there was much derogatory remarks about what was cool and what wasn't. Vile.

State schools (i went to several) two had uniform and rest didn't but they were introduced a couple of years after I left in the 1980's.

mummytheresa · 19/12/2007 11:07

1975 State primary Catholic Navy blue + tie for boys and girls. Very strict
State Secondary Blue Ties for boys not girls Blazers.
Big inner city school Birmingham.

CremolaFirCone · 19/12/2007 11:21

yes state primary
grey pinafore
white shirt
royal blue and white striped tie
royal blue beret with school insignia
grey blazer
grey socks with royal blue and white stripe

the dneices go to the same school and brought my old beret for 'show and tell'

whenachildisbob · 19/12/2007 11:34

Independent primary in the 80s
white shirt and tie
grey pinafore
grey socks (or royal blue tights (why??))
grey cardigan
blue blazer
blue baker boy cord hat - might have well had "shout abuse at me!" embroidered on it instead of the school badge
and regulation navy blue knickers! They checked!

Local state schools all had uniforms with blazers..but no hats unsurprisingly

mummyhill · 19/12/2007 11:47

First primary bought in a uniform of a pale blue roll neck sweater with a navy pinafore and navy tights for winter and blue and white gingham dresses for summer the year we moved house. The next primary we had to wear gray skirt or pinafore with blue blouse, grey tights and a navy jumper in winter with blue and whit gingham dress in summer. This was in the 80's.

My secondary school uniform was vile grey skirt yellow blouse and moss green jumper with a black blazer.

Hallgerda · 19/12/2007 12:38

1970s state primary - no uniform.

robin3 · 19/12/2007 12:41

Yes at one of my schools. Thank goodness because when I didn't I remember the fights with my Mum about what I was going to wear. Run of the mill navy everything and stripey tie.
