Did you wear a school uniform in primary school?

Posey · 18/12/2007 21:18

When were you in primary?
Was it state or private?

Most of local state primaries round here have a uniform.
When I was at primary, during the 70s, I didn't know any schools that did, except the private school in town.

Just interested.

Oh, and if you did, what was it like?

state primary

late 70s/ early 80s

Grey Skirt , grey socks or tights, black shoes.
Pale blue shirt, dark blue and light blue striped tie. Grey jumper or cardigan

summer uniform was blue & white gingham dress or plain blue dress with white socks and dark sandals.

went to private secondary that had uniform until the 6th form.

Blu · 19/12/2007 12:50

Yes - but i was at private school
DB and DS went to local state primary and had 'proper' uniforms - not sweat shirts and trousers - shirts, tie, jumper with coloured stripe, summer dresses, blazer, the works.

CowsGoMoo · 19/12/2007 13:29

Yes we had to wear a school uniform at my state primary school. Started in 1979. It consisted of a blue pinafore, white shirt, blue and red striped tie, blue cardigan and blue blazer with school crest on it. In the summer the girls wore blue and white striped dresses with blue cardigans. In the junior dept the girls were allowed to wear a blue school skirt instead of the pinafore.

I think we all looked very smart!

Secondary school was also state and had blue shirt, blue skirt, blue jumper and tie in house colours. No Trousers for girls allowed!!!

I am a great believer in school uniform, no arguments on what to wear in the mornings (on mufti days my children will sort their clothes out the night before but still change their minds in the morning and want to wear something different!) No bullying over who has the latest high tech sport shoe and I believe it gives a sense of pride in the school.

I was proud to wear my school uniform, however polyester and nylon were unheard of and all my uniform, esp at primary level was cotton or wool, totally natural! Cannot stand the horrid shiny trousers my son has to wear to school at the moment! eugh! (he does look smart though! )

1970's state primary - yep uniform slate grey and maroon (YUMMY!)
1980's private school - yep bottle green (with matching bottle green knickers!)

Smithagain · 19/12/2007 16:30

Yes, but it wasn't compulsory. About two thirds of people wore it, I think.

It was shirt, tie, cardigan, skirt and blazer when I started. The blazer was the only grey one in the city and had blue braid around the edges. Cost an arm and a leg. It amazes me now - it was just the local state primary.

Sweatshirts and T-shirts with the school logo were brought in when I was about 9. We thought they were soooooo cool after years of grey home-knitted jumpers!

I still have my last school blazers from primary and secondary. And my guide uniform. Am I very, very sad?

Ubergeekian · 19/12/2007 22:52

Glasgow Corporation Primary, 1970's. There was a uniform, but few children wore it, and I never did. Went on to a fee-paying secondary with uniform. Now loathe the whole idea for all levels.

NappiesGaloriouslyFestive · 19/12/2007 22:54

in primary till 1987
two diff state schools.

never had a school uniform at all, ever. first uniform i ever wore was for my first casino job (croupier)

harpsichordcarrier · 19/12/2007 22:55

primary 1975-1981, state no uniform
secondary 1981-1986 uniform but v lax e.g. black or navy skirts or trousers, white or blue shirts. boys had ties though.
sixth form no uniform just no denim and we even argued about that
I think uniform for primary is a v bad idea but I appreciate this is a minority view

smurfgirl · 19/12/2007 22:57

Sometimes, it was optional and I was about 40/60 wearing/not wearing.

It was navy/grey/black skirt, white shirt/polo, royal blue sweatshirt.

I wore lots of variations on that though, so my own sweatshirts in navy, and summer dresses in whatever colour I felt like. Rarely rarely wore proper uniform.

I was in state primary school from 1988-1995

Oh actually, I was at another school just for reception and it had very strict uniform (navy and royal blue) it was Catholic school so not sure if that made a difference?

no uniform in primary, middle or secondary, til I moved at the age of 14 to another secondary in a different county, then I wore my first ever uniform of Green blazer, grey skirt, white shirt and green/red/gold tie.

rantinghousewife · 19/01/2008 20:59

Nope, not in infants or juniors, when I went to Senior I thought it was a bloody injustice to have to wear a uniform, it was such a shock.

Blandmum · 19/01/2008 21:00

No, it was a state school in the 70s.

God, those school photos. We look so naff!

castille · 19/01/2008 21:04

Yes, state infants & juniors in the late 70s/early 80s. We hat straw hats and berets in infants too! They were on their way out though.

Uniform was green skirt/pinafore, gingham blouse or white shirt & tie, green sweater/cardi.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 19/01/2008 21:05

Yes I did - blue check pinafore dress in summer, blue school jumper, tie, white shirt, grey pleated skirt in winter - Then in my High School we had an even more comprehensive uniform in bottle green (bleurgh) including Knee high hockey socks and gym knickers the works (only thing missing was blazer and school hat - but we lived in a prententious well to do area in North Leeds)

For everyone scarred by the carp uniform, let me tell you, those photos make us look like an advert for deprived children

'These children have mothers with no taste, look at them, can't you feel their pain? Please give whatever you can so that we can dress these children in more tasteful clothing. Please act soon, or they will grow up thinking that polyester dresses with large daygo flowers on them look good'

prettybird · 19/01/2008 21:36

1966 to 73, State Primary (Bearsden, Glasgow: Compulsory uniform consisting of navy skirt, navy school blazer (with braid), tie (which we tied oursleves from P1) and white shirt and blue caridgan or jumper. The only flexibility was in winter when you could wear your own winter coat/jacket.

1973 to 78, State Secondary (still Bearsden, Glasgow). Same unform (even same tie as the primary school), but there was a certain amount of latitude. However, we were all such conventional kids, we didn't really push the boundaries very far!

ScienceTeacher · 19/01/2008 21:43

I finished primary in 1976. My uniform was a green tunic or family kilt, white shirt, school tie, and school pullover or cardigan, green wool socks and brown shoes. We also had a wool blazer, harris tweed coat and beret. In the summer, we had a stripey dress and straw hat. For games, we had a pleated skirt and white aertex.

This was an independent school in Edinburgh. I don't think the uniform has changed much since then.
