Did you wear a school uniform in primary school?

When were you in primary?
Was it state or private?

Most of local state primaries round here have a uniform.
When I was at primary, during the 70s, I didn't know any schools that did, except the private school in town.

Just interested.

Oh, and if you did, what was it like?

Yes, state primary.

Uniform was white shirt with red tie, grey skirt and grey cardigan, white socks, black shoes. Oh, and the school badge stitched on to the cardi pocket.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 18/12/2007 21:22

I had to wear a uniform in both Primary and secondary (by had to, I mean you got sent home if you never)

I started primary in 1983.

Both were state.

Hulababy · 18/12/2007 21:23

Went to state primary school from 1977. I didn't wear a uniform.

However when I went to middle school in 1982 I did have a uniform. Was naby blue skirt (no trouser option), pale blue shirt, navy cardigan or jumper, blue and silver tie.

coppertop · 18/12/2007 21:24

Our state primary had a uniform when Iwas there in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The blazer had been phased out a few years before but we still had to wear a blouse/shirt, tie and a jumper. Girls weren't allowed to wear trousers.

TheodoresMummy · 18/12/2007 21:25

I was HE, but then went to Primary for 1 year (aged 10).

Yes, we had a uniform.

I hated it.

I am desperately looking for a school for my DS and no uniform is on my wishlist.

CarGirl · 18/12/2007 21:25

Nobody wore school uniform at primary 1977-1983 although the school did have one

secondary school it was compulsary but very open to interpretation, it clamped down just after I left so late 80's

iwouldgoouttonight · 18/12/2007 21:25

I went to state primary school in 1978 (I think!) and didn't have to wear a uniform. The same school now doe shave a uniform though. Had to wear uniform in secondary school - black blazer, black/grey trousers or skirt, white shirt, black/grey jumper. Was dismal!

pantoinghousewife · 18/12/2007 21:26

We didn't wear uniform for either primary or juniors, but this was in the dark ages.

ChasingSquirrelsUpTheXmasTree · 18/12/2007 21:26

no - primary from '77 onwards.

TheodoresMummy · 18/12/2007 21:26

Oh, sorry.

It was the bogstandard grey skirt, white shirt, royal blue jumper, etc.

1987/88

IdrisYouaMerryChristmas · 18/12/2007 21:27

State primary school - I started in 1980 and wore a uniform.

It was grey skirt/pinafore, white blouse, yellow and black tie and grey cardigan/jumper. Had to wear black or brown shoes (and no sandals in summer). In summer, girls could wear blue gingham dresses.

Boys had to wear grey shorts until they were in the last year (10 and 11 year olds) when they could wear trousers.

Posey · 18/12/2007 21:27

CarGirl - that sounds like my secondary school. Lax and open to interpretation, which led to some hideous 1980s outfits!
Got strict from about 1990.

There was an optional uniform at my primary school (1982-1989ish). It was basic red and grey there was no official logo or anything. It could all be off the shelf.

Recpetion tended to wear it (parents wanted their children to dress properly for school etc.) Interest waned quickly and byt the equivalent of Yr2 no-body seemed to wear it IIRC.

CarGirl · 18/12/2007 21:29

the local girls private school ages 4-18 had a very strict uniform chocolate brown & blue blouses complete with hat - it was box pleat skirts & blazers too......I think uniform was far less used "up north"

IdrisYouaMerryChristmas · 18/12/2007 21:31

My school was in NW England btw. I think uniform started to be worn by everyone some time in the 70s, having looked at old photos of the school.

Mamamoor · 18/12/2007 21:31

I went to private primary - dark green tunic and cardi in winter - green striped dress in summer!
DD1 goes to state primary and has uniform of sorts in that jumpers/cardis are red and tunic/skirts/trousers are black or grey and summer dresses are red&White. Doesn't matter where it comes from - tunics/dresses/
cardis/jumpers can be purchased with school logo on but not essential! she has a mixture of the two!

NotEvenHopingForAWhiteXmas · 18/12/2007 21:32

At state primary 1968 to 1974. We did have a uniform, though not everyone wore it and only boys wore it in summer.

It was grey pinafore/ skirt for girls (no trousers) and grey trousers/shorts for boys; white shirt; grey cardigan/ jumper; red/ black/ white striped tie.

My DCs were at state primary 1990 to 2003 and had a uniform (various schools so various colours). By that time the gingham "school summer dress" had come in.

expatinscotland · 18/12/2007 21:38

Yes, I went to a private Catholic girls school until I was 14 and had to wear this hideous tartan pinafore with a yellow or white button down top. You could wear just the skirt - same ugly tartan - when you reached 6th grade.

It sucked.

serenity · 18/12/2007 21:44

All the primaries I went to were state schools...

75-78ish - no uniform
78-80 - church school, grey skirt, white blouse, grey jumper with burgundy stripe on V-neck, burgundy blazer and vile puffy burgundy cord hat (yellow gingham summer dress)
80-82 - church school, navy skirt and jumper, white shirt or blouse, navy and red striped tie, no blazer iirc (blue gingham summer dress)

dingdong05 · 18/12/2007 21:52

uniform in primary and 2ndary. In the summer at primary you could wear a t shirt with the school badge printed on it
Blazers weren't really worn at 2ndary, until the local school clothes shop started selling them off cheap (cause no one was buying them) and when the cool teachers and 6th years started wearing them we all did

I am an advocate for school uniforms. They give a better level playing field between the poor kids and the better off ones. There will always be statements made through a kids clothes, whether its the way they tie the tie, or whatever, but at least everyone starts with the same pallette, as it were. Even if I have the cash I won't be wanting to spend a fortune on clothes, so lil timmy can keep up with his peers 24/7

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 21:58

Yes, 80s, State, Royal blue and grey.

critterjitter · 18/12/2007 22:10

1970s. State primary (CofE). Straw hat with ribbon (get that!), blazer, shirt, cardigan, tie, grey socks with blue ribbons. We had to walk in pairs to church every morning holding hands and holding onto our hats at the same time!

We didn't have a PE kit though - just had to strip down to our vests and big navy blue knickers (freezing!).

Nightynight · 18/12/2007 22:15

1970s, state primary, no uniform.
