Labour want all public schools abolished - hypothetically how much pressure would this put on the state- could we afford an extra 7% in the system. Can a government really abolish them if so how? Make them
Illegal? Remove their charitable
Status and probably make them even more elite?

They are also planning to confiscate: endowments, investments and properties held by private schools.

Corbyn isn't wasting anytime trying to turn us into Venezuela.

My dd school has been owned and run by the same family for 100 years. They would lose everything. I experienced communism as a child in the Democratic Republic of Germany (East). We were all so relieved when the horrors were over, and now someone's stupid and naive enough to go down this path again.

It's just one way to make sure Labour won't win in a lot of Tory seats, and the party could implode. (Of course what is good enough for Mr Corbyn himself and his sons, even if he objected, but shouldn't be allowed to anyone else.)

Plenty of countries with better education outcomes than our own have minimal private sector schools.

If we can afford billions for investment bankers, why not for education?

You and your employer pay contributions and the banks gamble with that money to make more money, including shit loads for themselves.

However they then started taking the piss and making complicated schemes to cream even more money for themselves which fell apart. They should have been held accountable for their actions - but they weren’t.

I have a real problem with that. They don’t create wealth for anyone other than themselves.

It is fine to object to the existence of the private school system in principle.

It is utterly bonkers to think that the state system is currently in any condition where it could cope with the private system ceasing to exist.

It’s not just about the money, there aren’t enough teachers. You can’t magic them up with some wishywashy whinges about bankers.

You’re assuming that they’d want to. That is not something that should be assumed.

Teachers are leaving the state system in droves. The government has failed for years to meet its recruitment targets. There’s a critical shortage of state school teachers.

So obviously it’s not the most pleasant work environment.

In reality, the private schools would be slowly transitioned across over a number of years I strongly suspect.

They may compromise and decide that charity status is removed etc - which I think is a great idea as they’re certainly not charities.

A slow transition still doesn’t solve this problem.

I’m sure they did the same last time they were in power which is why New Labour introduced student loan repayments, increased teacher salaries etc.

Yes. But Labour getting into power doesn’t magically make those people teachers again.

And it’s going to take years to fix the problems that the Tories have caused through underfunding. Chucking another 600,000 pupils into the mix would probably break things entirely.

Fix the state system FIRST. It’s not rocket science.

Come on, engage your brain a bit. I suspect it would be remove charitable status, have some sort of quasi public status etc then transition over. Probably take a decade.

Given that a lot of private schools were actually originally set up to educate the poor, I think it’s time they stop taking the piss.

Even a gentle transition would be more than the state system can cope with.

And it’s laughable that you assume Labour would plan for something taking a decade. They’d plan for it being done by the next election so it couldn’t be reversed. 5 years tops.
