Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has a DS doing the 7+ or 8+ exam for some of the London day schools, like St Paul's Juniors, Westminster, or Kings. My DS is doing the 7+ and the first exam is on December 1st (St Paul's). I think I have a fairly good idea of the exam structure but, of course, I would welcome any top tips - as well as company from a Mumsnet support group, as we go through this! Good luck to everyone!

Re St. Paul’s, mine said all the papers were easy, and much easier than King’s. He left a few questions for maths unanswered due to lack of time, also a few for reasoning and 3 for comprehension. The dictation he said was super easy.

My DS wasn’t able to answer 2 maths questions but managed the rest. He certainly didn’t think it was easy but he did get a place at KCS and he came out saying some of that was difficult!

Tingting01 · 30/11/2019 21:00

Quitestressed, out of interest did your DS finish the maths papers at KCS?

Tingting01 · 30/11/2019 21:02

And how did he find the dictation?

Tingting01 · 30/11/2019 21:03

The dictation SPJ I mean...

quitestressed78 · 30/11/2019 21:12

I think he finished maths at KCS. He found the dictation ok today. It really is difficult to tell and so many boys taking it!

Tingting01 · 30/11/2019 21:25

Agree! I think if he finished the maths at KCS that is a superb achievement as it was apparently sooo long!!

quitestressed78 · 30/11/2019 23:41

Oh that is news to me. He never said. I think it is difficult trying to gauge how it went from what they say!

openskies · 01/12/2019 07:38

Yes, it’s very hard to tell! I had no idea the KCS maths paper was long - I got the impression it was a bit too easy, as the qu my son described to me as the hardest really wasn’t that hard. But he wouldn’t tell me much at all about English, which I took as a bad sign, and he did still get a place...

quitestressed78 · 01/12/2019 08:18

My son was not used to the type of verbal reasoning questions at KCJS. He said they were not similar to the usual ones you see in the books. On the plus side we will know very soon if there is any chance of a place at SPJS. Either way we are not doing anymore exams now.

Tingting01 · 01/12/2019 11:59

Agree, the reasoning at KCJS was apparently difficult for my DS.. re SPJ I think we will know by tomorrow by email?

SallyBlank · 01/12/2019 12:06

Mine said the SPJ maths was long but he managed to finish. If yours all said it was difficult I’m worried DS misunderstood lots of it now! What topics did yours say came up?

Tingting01 · 01/12/2019 13:58

Sallyblank, mine said it was easy but only compared to the KCJS maths paper which was apparently v long and difficult. In itself it was probably longer than the specimen papers but the face that he finished is a good sign.
Mine left 2 questions out as he ran out of time. He also left a few q. unanswered for the reasoning and a few left out for the comprehension which worries me...

quitestressed78 · 01/12/2019 17:43

Don’t worry @SallyBlank as your DS may have just found it easier. My DS tends to think it’s hard if he cannot do everything easily. I only got a few things out of him which were not really helpful. Anyway we can’t change it now! 😂

Tingting01 · 01/12/2019 18:12

Do you know when we hear back from SPJS about being called up for the activity day?

quitestressed78 · 01/12/2019 18:26

Should be tomorrow by email

Cadeaux · 02/12/2019 00:27

Does and of DS shared the last mental math task in SPJ this Saturday? My DS started to talk about houses and numbers but I didn’t figure it out what it was?
And also does anyone have a rough idea of how many boys were there?

Heist · 02/12/2019 10:12

Hello everyone, has anyone heard back from SPJ for 7+ group activity tasks?
What time do they usually send an email?
Do they also advise to the boys who have not been successful at first stage?

Icannotbelievethis001 · 02/12/2019 10:17

@Heist those who are called back will get emails sent out today and those that are unsuccessful get an email a few days later. Guessing they want to ensure that everyone that is called back takes up a place and ensure they have the 100 odd candidates that they need for second round.

Good luck

quitestressed78 · 02/12/2019 10:20

Every hour that passes today will mean less chance as we are near front of alphabet!

Heist · 02/12/2019 10:44

Thanks for replying.
Will the emails be sent in alphabetical order?

quitestressed78 · 02/12/2019 10:48

I don’t know for sure but I think in previous years they were.

organiccoffee · 02/12/2019 11:48

I previous years, emails are sent in mid/late afternoon. you will be told either way. The yes email might arrive slightly earlier, but they should all arrive today.

quitestressed78 · 02/12/2019 11:54

Thanks organiccoffee.

Cadeaux · 02/12/2019 12:53
