RGS Guildford 2018

I’ve had so much fun lurking on the entrance test threads in the last years - now it’s my son’s turn .
Still 10 days to go but I’m starting the thread .
Sitting a couple of other schools as well so maybe we could start a general ‘ Surrey entrance exams ‘ thread ( fun ;-)! )
DS ‘s first exam is in two days time .
He’s preparing himself by playing computer games . I let it go as I don’t believe in prepping children too much for these exams - . I just want him to be relaxed .

Sorry to those with bad news. I hope your boys are ok.
Nothing received here, but we have unreliable post, so don’t think I’ll relax till Feb 9th! Not long to go now.

Rianna · 31/01/2018 17:21

What I think is they make it worse by saying the no letters come first . Cause you get your hopes up . Then in the end there’s only a week left ...Hampton has been ridicolously hard , ‘our ‘ school geniuses got rejected as well . It was easier for 13 plus , more got called back

If these really academic children don’t get into Hampton or RGS , Reeds will have a good percentage of really bright boys !

Hamptons was very hard exam. Jekyll and Hyde came up as the Comprehension text and the Maths had lots of simultaneous equations which is ridiculous to expect 10 year olds to know when it is not part of the Year 6 curriculum. Reeds will definitely end up with some clever boys.

Zam786 · 31/01/2018 17:51

All the boys from our school that did 13plus got called back. Unfortunately we made the huge mistake of doing 11plus. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

heysunfish · 31/01/2018 17:59

Zam786 do you mean a huge mistake to do Hampton’s 11+ or RGS too? Can you explain? We are thinking of doing the same, though for RGS, not Hamptons. (Based on GSG, I gather going from prep to Hampton’s is only at 13+.)

Bthewoofwoof · 31/01/2018 18:02

We got a no from RGS today, for 13+. It was a long shot for DS but then he thought he did well. Fingers crossed for Reeds 🙏🏻🍷🍫 Good luck to those waiting.

heysunfish · 31/01/2018 18:13

I can’t imagine (proper) simultaneous equations in an 11+ exam... It’s not even in the Y7 curriculum. The only ones I’ve seen in practise exams looked complicated at first glance but the solution was actually a clever, yet simple substitution that was required. These are typically easier to ‘see’ if you have no knowledge of simultaneous equations whatsoever!

Zam786 · 31/01/2018 18:29

11plus for Hamptons. Our school has a good relationship with Hamptons and not realising made rookie mistake and did 11plus.

Zam786 · 31/01/2018 18:30

They take a lot of kids from our school at 13plus and usually get scholarships.

heysunfish · 31/01/2018 18:33

Sorry to hear Zam786. Will they allow a re-try for 13+? Good luck for your other choices. I know Reeds already has a lot of clever boys... more and more going from our school every year!

madworld67 · 31/01/2018 18:59

12+ is for 13+ call back. Exam for 2019 is tomorrow. Zam786 it will work out for the best in the end. Your DS will do well where he is happy and feels good about himself. Perhaps RGS won't achieve that. I bet you wont be disappointed in a few years time.

sazzy5 · 31/01/2018 19:09

I really feel for your DS but I know when they start their school in September they won’t give a RGS another thought. All the boys we know who ‘didn’t’ get in are having a fantastic time at their school. I think we feel worse than them. Reeds is definitely the one to watch a great Head, lovely facilities and definitely stretching the academics more. Good luck with your other schools.

Zam786 · 31/01/2018 19:35

Reedsis definitely a good school. The headmaster is the exdeputy head of RGS. So that says a lot. He will fine and will go on to a really school and do well for himself. Thanks for the support! Really appreciate it

Reeds is a distance for us and like you Rianna we decided to go for it in the end fail safe if RGS and Hamptons didn’t workout. Talking to my DS this morning he said that not many kids went for 13plus for the Reeds exam. So maybe we have a chance. Have to wait until the 8th to find out.

Dimpy · 01/02/2018 09:05

It’s a no for my DS as well..😔 haven’t told him yet...waiting for Reading Blue Coat results now on Monday...hope he makes it..or it’s Bohunt Wokingham for him..we will try again at 13+...congrats to all DS who made it to RGS!

Rianna · 01/02/2018 09:08

Good luck zam . Sorry Dimpy !

So sorry Dimpy. Keep your chin up and hope your so will be okay with the news. We are also waiting for Reading Blue Coats on Monday. Keep us posted x

SheilaFentiman · 01/02/2018 09:14

Sorry to hear that, Dimpy. Did the letter just arrive? Good luck with your other options.

anonymoosy · 01/02/2018 13:46

Nothing for us today. Hugs to those with a 'no' so far and I agree with what PP said - whatever school they end up joining they will end up loving! These are all great schools. This process is torturous - I'd feel so much better just having a decision either way rather than this waiting, waiting, waiting....unable to get hopes up just in case it is still a 'no'.

CRM114 · 01/02/2018 14:01

I thought all the no letters have been sent.

SheilaFentiman · 01/02/2018 14:04

CRM, we think that all the no letters other than for boys who were interviewed were sent on Tuesday first class, but of course some post may be delayed etc.

Sobeenthere · 01/02/2018 14:13

I feel sorry for the 13+ boys. They may still get the come back at 12 letter which means another exam next year! The only people who are safe are those who sat for 11 and still haven't had a letter...yet! If they've been posted and if you don't receive today or tomorrow, presume you are safe.

CRM114 · 01/02/2018 14:35

I’ll leave the champagne on ice for the moment then. Confused, although DS is 13+ so we really won’t know if we have another hoop until next week. Seriously though ... surely there must be a better process. I can’t see why they can’t email them! Hmm
