I’ve had so much fun lurking on the entrance test threads in the last years - now it’s my son’s turn .
Still 10 days to go but I’m starting the thread .
Sitting a couple of other schools as well so maybe we could start a general ‘ Surrey entrance exams ‘ thread ( fun ;-)! )
DS ‘s first exam is in two days time .
He’s preparing himself by playing computer games . I let it go as I don’t believe in prepping children too much for these exams - . I just want him to be relaxed .

Re the scholarships : don’t forget they’re very young and develop at different stages . A child can be extremely bright and mature for 11 , but a few years laters the others might have reached the same stage . I would worry more about the pressure of a scholarship , then about not getting one .

( the School doesn’t put pressure on them but they might feel it )

Re the scholarships - my DS sat for it at 13+ but didn't get one. However he works really hard and is top of the class in a lot of subjects, better than the scholars. I don't think it matters too much what they go in with, more what they do when they get there

madworld67 · 19/02/2018 13:33

I thought they did stream for Maths Rianna?

sazzy5 · 19/02/2018 14:32

They stream for Maths in the 4th year, they stay in tutor groups for the first 3 years.

Rianna · 19/02/2018 14:48

Congrats Sheila !

Thanks Rianna!

We’ve made our decision , RGS it will be . Does anyone know if they put the children in alfabetic order in their forms ? They did for form 3 .

sazzy5 · 25/02/2018 11:36

Hi Rianna glad you’ve made your choice! Yes alphabetic and language choice is how they do it in Yr1.

Rianna · 25/02/2018 13:47

Language choice you make straight away ? German French or Spanish ?

OP posts:
Levante · 25/02/2018 14:35

Head of year 1 said on Friday that you choose between French and Spanish and then the classes are split alphabetically.

SheilaFentiman · 26/02/2018 09:49

Thanks, Levante

Rianna · 26/02/2018 13:08

Thx . Sound like he knows someone already . He ( the darling son ) still looks a bit intimidated by it all . But I’m pretty sure he will be ok .

Hi All .... accepted RGS offer today.... we were so confused between Wilson ( a grammar school) and RGS .... I hope we made a good choice....

sazzy5 · 05/03/2018 16:06

Omni80 it is a very tricky choice but once you make it there should be a sense of relief! I know that is how I felt. 1 year on and my DS is loving school, loads of friends and enjoys all the sport etc. Your DS will enjoy it too.

mrsbunnyw · 03/04/2018 18:22

I only just found you guys! My DS starts at RGS in September. Do any more experienced parents have any advice?

Also does anyone travel in from Burpham and have advice about the best modes of transport? I’d like DS to get to/from school independently but it’s hard to know when he’ll finish etc yet.

Thank you!

SheilaFentiman · 09/04/2018 13:15

Hi mrsbunnyw, I think most of us are first time parents though there are one or two who were on the thread getting younger brothers in!

The info about the end of the school day should be available on the website, I think, or I'm sure you can call up.

SheilaFentiman · 02/05/2018 12:17

Glad we got the info through about 20th June!

SheilaFentiman · 04/06/2018 12:02

Not long until the welcome event!

sazzy5 · 05/06/2018 12:32

Exciting times. I hope your DS has as good a start as mine, he is loving the school and has a great class of boys who seem to get on very well. I worried about the journey, number of school books and the amount of homework but it has all gone fine! Good luck all.

SheilaFentiman · 11/06/2018 17:47

Thanks Sazzy!

esherry · 12/10/2018 14:18

HI All, I am a year behind you all and considering whether my DS should sit for RGS. Given they have no past papers and my DS's school rarely send anything there, I have no sight/insight as to what to expect. I am particularly interested in the English creative writing. Can any of you remember the kind of essay titles or indeed the questions asked at Interview? Thanks so much in advance X

*anyone not anything !
