Thought I'd go ahead and start. Found the old threads really interesting and would welcome ongoing input from those who've been through the whole process.
Ds in Year 5 and we are looking at a mixture of grammar schools and indies for 11+ Whitgift recommended this year - we've been told there is a drive to raise academic standards. We're going to the Open afternoon on 10th Nov.

Ds is having a tantrum today because he doesn't want to go school tomorrow as the results will be out. Rather he go school in case he doesn't get the result he wants! Not sure what to do? Any other kids staying home tomorrow

AnotherNewt · 11/02/2016 08:47

IME, preps are informed usually a day or so before parents are told (so they are ready for what they might need to cope with next). And some schools at least stay closely in touch with the preps who regularly send them pupils throughout the process. Prep heads keep the notifications highly confidential, for obvious reasons.

I'm sure there will also be secondary schools that do not do that, though.

fleurdelacourt · 11/02/2016 09:05

supermummy - I did think about keeping ds at home....

this is mainly driven by 2 ends of the spectrum that I witnessed last year in the playground: the Mummies wondering round saying "It's so awful having a choice, I just don't know what to do!" Hmm

and at the other end - children openly weeping because they hadn't go the school of the choice Sad

But - ds is genuinely quite relaxed and so I've decided he can go in and I will only tell him his results once we are safely out of everyone's way in the car. If he were worried or had a clear favourite school then perhaps I would rethink that.

Seeline · 11/02/2016 09:18

I have two DCs go from state primary to (different) secondary indies and in neither case did the primary show any interest at all in the process at any stage. They did not mention it at all - even when with DS it meant leaving a year early. I don't think state primaries get involved in the process to any great extent.

Muminfire · 11/02/2016 09:23

My DS is so sure about his W result and that scary me. If not, it would be a big tragedy for him...

Supermummy1674 · 11/02/2016 09:25

fleurdelacourt

Thank you! I think it's probably best he goes to school so that I have time to think abt how to break the news if we don't get the right offers.

I really hope he gets his choice....worried it my break his confidence!

fleurdelacourt · 11/02/2016 09:30

I have dd in year 5 now -and I know that next year will not be at all relaxed - she is a completely different personality who already has her heart set on one very high achieving school.

She will definitely take a sick day from school that day and get the stress/sadness/celebrations out of the way quietly at home.

re: results. have never had any indication that our school knows the results ahead of the parents?

Muminfire · 11/02/2016 09:30

Seeline, it's strange our primary school is more interesting indie results than grammars. 1/3 of 60 children from our school is going to independent schools and only 3-8 are going to grammar.

Seeline · 11/02/2016 09:33

Muminfire - wow that's a lot. My DCs primary is quite large - 3 form intake, but in DDs year last year I think probably 6 got into grammars and maybe 4 max went indy. That's an outstanding primary with plenty of level 5/6 kids......

Good luck everyone!! Fingers X for all

Berora · 11/02/2016 17:53

That's so much pressure, really awful. Why can't parents of those children wait with breaking the news until they get home, to somehow minimise the upset and spare the humiliation? Sit on the sofa, give them a big hug and assure them that as upsetting as it is, it's not the end of the world? I really don't understand some people's thinking...

LIZS · 11/02/2016 17:56

Ime the heads do know by the time you get the envelope. Lists are posted in staff rooms and we've known the head even congratulate children before they get home.

fleurdelacourt · 11/02/2016 19:13

Berora - I know, it was awful last year as lots of children unexpectedly didn't get into one particular school...

If our school did find out today then all the teachers were doing a very good job keeping quiet at pick up time!

Hope tomorrow brings the news that everyone is hoping for.

Berora · 11/02/2016 19:34

I can well imagine, fleurdelacourt... I'm keeping fingers crossed for everyone, hopefully we will be able to share some good news tomorrow. Smile

I've told DS his letter was posted today, but it may arrive either tomorrow or on Saturday, depending on how well post works. I do hope it will be tomorrow, but you never know!

Good luck to to all.

MrsPatmore · 11/02/2016 19:40

Best of luck to everyone for tomorrow - it'll be us this time next year!

OP posts:
jarofcalm · 11/02/2016 19:43

Good luck everyone. I know last year there certainly were heads who knew about Trinitt results on the day the letters arrived but who knows if it's the same this time round.

Ahmedfamily · 11/02/2016 20:50

Best of luck to you all tomorrow - surprisingly this week has flown for us!

Supermummy1674 · 11/02/2016 21:03

Good Luck everyone!

Muminfire · 11/02/2016 21:07

Good luck! And I hope we will get results by phone tomorrow... If not we will know it only in 6 days...

foragogogo · 11/02/2016 21:13

Good luck everyone really hope you all get the results you are hoping for - for any that don't, remember that its not the end of the world and your sons still have their whole lives and masses of potential ahead of them! (easy to say I know)

Our school know exactly what news people will be getting tomorrow, they've been dropping massive hints all day. One boy's parents know where he has got a scholarship and where he hasn't (but not level).

Anyway, all academic now, it's over to the postman!

BoSelectaBigBiff · 11/02/2016 22:12

I have to say, I think it's outrageous that the prep schools know the results before the parents & child. I mean, I know the main reason for a prep school's existence is to get children into selective secondary schools, but even so, that would piss me right off.

At least we are at a state school, who couldn't give two hoots about the results, and presumably don't know them yet. I'd be REALLY pissed off if they did know them before me though, seeing as there was zero input from them in the whole process - any success for DS1 will be 99% down to his hard work (and his tutor) outside of school.

Rant over.

Best of luck to everybody for tomorrow!

walkingtheplank · 11/02/2016 23:25

Good luck everyone. I'm not part of the process this year but feel slightly nauseous on your behalf. Hopefully everyone will get at least one offer. Smile

ElevenPlusSoon · 11/02/2016 23:42

Good luck everyone! DS though it is just an exam to test how good he is and completely forget he has done the test now. Although DS 99% will not leave his school this year. I am still looking for the result tomorrow.

sara176 · 12/02/2016 08:38

Good luck everyone !
