Thought I'd go ahead and start. Found the old threads really interesting and would welcome ongoing input from those who've been through the whole process.
Ds in Year 5 and we are looking at a mixture of grammar schools and indies for 11+ Whitgift recommended this year - we've been told there is a drive to raise academic standards. We're going to the Open afternoon on 10th Nov.

Hi Davira I spoke with T it's on entry you get scholarship not in later years. You would have to decline place and apply again for 11 or 13 plus. Hope that helps! Not sure abt W though mayb the same.

Ladymuck · 07/02/2016 17:23

I believe that you have the chance to apply for 6th form academic scholarships as an internal candidate. There are of course academic awards given to the boys, so they are certainly recognised, but not unfortunately with a fee reduction.

Muminfire · 07/02/2016 18:15

OMG I've just realized I bought tickets for holiday on 11th February! I was sure our flight will be late evening on 12 February. Stupid me...
Does anybody know is it possible to know results by phone?

Supermummy1674 · 07/02/2016 19:25

I think I read on the thread somewhere u can call them and ask them for your results on Friday the day we receive them or email them to request it. Worth a try cos everyone should get results by friday so no reason not to tell u by friday.

BoSelectaBigBiff · 08/02/2016 07:17

So...its results week at last. How's everyone feeling? Are you going to sit at home watching out for the postman?

DS1 wants to open the letters himself after school. I'm obviously going to have to steam them open, and reseal, aren't I? - there's no way I could just sit there looking at those unopened letters all day! Grin

Good luck to everyone waiting for news!

Firefox1066 · 08/02/2016 09:14

BoSelecta Both T and W give individual letters so no need to steam letters open and reseal!

It was great to see the look on DS's face when he opened his own letters.

Good luck to everybody this week... Brings back memories from last year, I know how nerve racking this week will be.

Cannons · 08/02/2016 10:59

Thinking this week is going to drag Angry
I remember going through it a couple of years ago I opened the letter and re sealed it thankful it was good news😀
Hopefully the same for my youngest this year he's so anxious

foragogogo · 08/02/2016 11:18

Hi all, just wanted to ask the oldtimers advice about letters day :). I'm supposed to be at work so won't be home with DS until 6pm. He says everyone will know at school earlier as parents come in and bring their letters or tell them at pickup time. Does this really happen? I think he'd be better off opening them in private at home wouldn't he? Can imagine how horrible it will be in the playground with parents showing off / kids upset. What normally happens? Am I being mean to say he should wait and digest any news good or bad at home first before all the inevitable chatter starts?

Seeline · 08/02/2016 11:23

You're lucky to have a choice - due to a later Easter, the year my DS was waiting on results, offer day fell during half term so not only did I have the pain of waiting for the postie with him glued to the window, I also had to race him to the front door mat and open it in front of him without any chance to prepare myself. Luckily it was good news Smile

That year, both T and W included a sealed letter for DS in the main envelope congratulating him on his offer. Don't know if that works for all schools, but maybe that is what parents take to school.
As a general guideline, if the envelope is A4 size it is probably safe to open in front of your DSs.

foragogogo · 08/02/2016 11:28

oh god the envelope size thing!!!

so if it's a small envelope - bad news. A4 - good news. what about A5?!!!

AveEldon · 08/02/2016 11:43

foragogogo - I suspect the prep school heads will know Friday morning who has got what offers

I certainly won't be taking letters/news to school pick up
Usually our post arrives after 3pm anyway

BoSelectaBigBiff · 08/02/2016 11:57

Ah, I hadn't realised they did that with the letters - good to know. That's a nice touch. There are about 5 or 6 families for our school all waiting for results, so I'm dreading bumping into any of them on Friday afternoon, no matter what our results are. It will be awful for any boys that didn't get in, to see their friends celebrating even if their parents are all claiming they only did the 10+ "just to see" and allegedly aren't planning on sending their DS in September at all, even if they get in

I really don't know how I'm going to get through this week without a serious amount of Wine. I had thought that DS1 was quite calm and unfussed - until I looked at his calendar and realised he had written "TRINITY AND WHITGIFT RESULTS!!!!" all over Friday. I think he's probably more bothered than he's letting on...

Berora · 08/02/2016 11:59

I won't be taking any letters to school either. If we have bad news, I'd rather deal with it in private at home; if it's good news, it would be quite insensitive to tell DS in the playground in case other children in his class may be unlucky.

Firefox1066 · 08/02/2016 12:22

We were lucky in that DS was the only one from his prep in his year that did 10+, so we took his individually addressed offers from W and T to school and let him open them. We still were sensitive about others, so we got him to open them well away from everyone else and with just us there.

On the envelopes thing... Last year it was A4 and thick = Offer for T; A4 and thinnish = wait list for T, Normal Size = No Offer. For W it was A5 and thick = offer; A5 and thinnish = Waitlist; Normal = No offer.

No guarantee it'll be the same this year of course

Supermummy1674 · 08/02/2016 12:24

Do the current school heads know abt the offers sent from W & T?

BoSelectaBigBiff · 08/02/2016 12:33

Thanks for the heads-up on envelope size, firefox. Our letterbox is quite small, so I guess if the postman has to ring the bell, that might be a good sign(!)

Berora · 08/02/2016 12:37

Thank you for the detailed breakdown of what's what envelope-wise, Firefox1066. It will give me a few seconds of mental preparation before I open the letters. I just hope the mail is not going to be delayed and we will receive the letters on Friday, not on Saturday! I'm glad we will have a week for things to settle, but quite a few boys in DS's school did both W and T, so going back to school after half-term may be a bit tricky, whatever the outcome...

Muminfire · 10/02/2016 21:44

My son told me that tomorrow his school (state) will get results from indie schools and will privately speak with children about their results. It sounds strange, isn't it? Of course I wish it would be true but... Has anybody got the same information from DS's school?

Berora · 10/02/2016 21:55

I've never heard of that before (in state schools) and I sincerely hope it's not going to be the case in our school. If someone does not get the news they have been hoping for all this time, how is the school going to deal with a potentially very upset child? I think letting the children know the results should be left to parents.

daddyanxious · 10/02/2016 22:08

That certainly didn't happen with us last year. In fact, the teachers at the old school wouldn't stop asking DS for an update!

Muminfire · 10/02/2016 22:33

Teachers spoke with children about behavior after getting results - don't ask, don't laugh, don't tell stupid and rude words and so on... But anyway it seems stupid to tell results without parents. I hope my son didn't understand clearly and it is wishful thinking

Supermummy1674 · 10/02/2016 22:44

I'm not happy abt that I would want to tell my son myself hope that is not the case as that will be very disappointing! Where did your son get his information from? The head teacher

Ladymuck · 11/02/2016 07:47

State and Prep schools don't get details of the results. The schools speak to them early on (pre interview) and give them an idea of exam results, but IME the schools don't know what is in the envelope. In particular the prep schools do not know level of scholarship.

isthisabigdeal · 11/02/2016 07:59

Not quite at yhe same stage as you all yer but DS did 7+ a while ago including for DC and Kings in wimbledon and his prep school knee the results about a week before we got offers. They are under strict instructions not to tell but a few days before the results came out out DS was asked to show a boy around the school who'd be taking up his space come September which slightly gave the game away.

isthisabigdeal · 11/02/2016 08:00

Sorry for the typos - damn phone.

Good luck to you all for tomorrow.
