Thought I'd go ahead and start. Found the old threads really interesting and would welcome ongoing input from those who've been through the whole process.
Ds in Year 5 and we are looking at a mixture of grammar schools and indies for 11+ Whitgift recommended this year - we've been told there is a drive to raise academic standards. We're going to the Open afternoon on 10th Nov.

Thanks for the warning, seeline!

Can anyone tell me what the school shoe requirements are for Whitgift?
I think I heard someone say that trainer style shoes are not acceptable but can't find any info

Berora · 11/08/2016 15:16

DS in Y10 tells me a number of his friends wear black trainers for school and get away with it, but the official rule is 'proper' school shoes that 'can take shoe polish', so no swede and no patent leather. Bear in mind, though, new headmaster is starting from September and he may want to make sure rules are followed. I would err on the side of caution and start off with proper school shoes rather than trainers for new starters.

AveEldon · 11/08/2016 16:17

Thanks. His existing shoes are trainer style clarks school shoes that can be polished (ish!)

Berora · 11/08/2016 22:08

Hopefully they will be fine, no point in buying new shoes if his existing ones fit! Smile

AveEldon · 31/08/2016 14:59

I'm back with another shoe question - the rugby boots - do they need to have full metal studs? no plastic? no blades?

GetMeOut · 31/08/2016 15:50

No blades. A combination of moulded and screen in is fine. Ground is very hard at the moment so the boys have been wearing trainers in pre season training.

GetMeOut · 31/08/2016 15:51

Screw in

AveEldon · 31/08/2016 16:09

Thank you.

What new hell is this - sewing on name tags to the outside of all the games kit!!! Seriously, whose idea was this! I've only managed half of one tag so far. Glad I didn't leave it all until Sunday night. Will sewing at each end be OK, or do I need to stitch them all the way round?! Grrr.

GetMeOut · 02/09/2016 23:50

Tis the command of the ancient god Labelos..,,without the label thou shalt be lost....,
Sew either end is fine according to Ancient Greek legend. Particularly on socks..... Did I mention socks ? Aagh

AveEldon · 03/09/2016 09:15

Bo - I have done all the way round but only two garments so far

Add in the joy of next week's train strike.....

schbittery · 04/09/2016 15:04

Those F&ing labels!

I have been trying to do them for weeks but it's so tedious I am only doing one side at a time. Still got about 6 things to go .... I did all way round apart from socks - because I did them all the way round and then discovered this means they can't get them up over their calves!

Apparently there is a local dry cleaner that does them for you which I wish I'd known about before ...

AveEldon · 05/09/2016 06:38

Why is it raining? I have just had to label a raincoat!

mydaddy · 06/09/2016 09:59

A bit late perhaps, but I have quite a lot of used Whitgift junior school uniform if anyone is interested. All in good condition, includes shirts and sports wear. Inbox me if interested.

Hello everyone,
How is Full Boarding of Whitgift? I am looking for Year 9 , next academic session.
We live in Switzerland, so DS will be International student. I am desperate for information about School, boarding or anything.
Thanks.

AveEldon · 16/09/2016 20:43

No experience of boarding sorry. It might be worth starting a new thread. Are you considering any other schools?
