Anyone still out there?!

Don't know about T, but only 2 boys from W yr 6 sat the Sutton Grammar exams this year, would be interesting to see if they actually leave.

Good luck to you all, I remember this time last year, the wait was almost sickening...

But as someone mentioned earlier, come September DC would have places, may not be first choice, but may be place the would suit them best.

Also with the changes in grammar exams this year, if DC have passed, then they have a higher chance of getting a place than previous years.

MrsSteptoe · 11/02/2014 11:35

I need a mantra that puts a positive spin on my vision of "five interviews, five outright rejections, no joy on the CAF choices either so place at local undersubscribed secondary". Best one wins a virtual Creme Egg and a giant banner saying "45% got 5 GCSEs at grades A-C in 2013!", with a strapline underneath saying "see you in 2014! [thumbs up icon]"

right, off to Sainsbury's.

AliceLostinWonderland · 11/02/2014 13:05

JustAnotherUserName thank you so much. My boy has really worked hard throughout the year.
I am taking beach day as it comes rather than think of Friday. DS has an inset day on Friday and said he will open the envelopes by himself...unfortunately....I will be stuck at work....joy!

pooziepuzzle · 11/02/2014 13:06

Not enough for Graveney but my friends DS got 280 so 99%! Very happy as their first choice

Teddingtonmum1 · 11/02/2014 13:40

Breathe mrs S breathe !!! As they say you only need 1 yes !! But WHY would a school boast about 65% of their pupils failing ?? Not that you'll be visiting any time soon Mrs S have faith in master S will bring home the offers. Fingers tightly crossed for u

wanttoknow77 · 11/02/2014 13:51

An interesting point has been raised on this thread recently and like LadyM, I dont have any hopes of my son sitting the 11+ after having given his all in the 10+ last month...... but I am interested to know what is the view of schools like T and W for boys in Yr 6 sitting grammars ?

MrsSteptoe · 11/02/2014 13:59

Actually, because that particular statistic makes it not the worst school in the borough, Teddingtonmum1... though actually it's the other way round (my fault), it's 55% did get 5 GCSEs, 45% therefore didn't.

I do need someone to hand me one of those famous Mumsnets grips, though. I am unravelling a bit this week.

LadyMuck · 11/02/2014 14:05

They're obviously fairly unimpressed, especially given how early the Grammar tests are (so you haven't even settled into the school yet, before you're already showing that this school is essentially your 2nd choice, and you would prefer a grammar place). At 11+ W and T know that they will be an "insurance offer" for boys who will have sat the grammars too, and offer more accordingly.

The staff are professional enough not to take it out on the boys in any way though. But it is a huge risk to take if there are younger siblings, as you wouldn't necessarily want to burn your bridges with a school.

wanttoknow77 · 11/02/2014 14:17

Thanks LadyM. Makes sense...younger one is a DD, so will be targetting different schools but I think I wouldn't like to disrupt my DS soon after entering a school which he has worked really hard for....all this assuming he gets in ofcourse Smile!

Croydonmumtods · 11/02/2014 14:24

Oh dear mrss sounds like you are having a real crisis. My psychic powers are telling me you will be screaming for joy on Friday as the offers come rolling in and shortly thereafter you'll be raising two fingers up to your local failing secondary. This time next year you'll be looking at the latest secondary thread wondering why on earth everyone is so worried. Seriously it will all be fine.

MrsSteptoe · 11/02/2014 14:27

Croydonmum Thanks
One thing I have absolutely set my heart on: I WILL come back on this thread next year and hold all the hands I can find for first timers. It's the least I can do. So many people have helped over the last year.

mummyinatizz · 11/02/2014 14:46

getting nervous reading this thread again, having managed to suppress my addition for a few days.
I'm with you Alice - I thought interview invite and sports assessment invite meant we were close, plus positive interview, thought we were then closer - now I am back to half empty glass and thinking how will be do another year of all this. We did 10+ at W.
3 sleeps til we know.

mummyinatizz · 11/02/2014 14:48

addiction - not addition - can easily suppress my addition!

LadyMuck · 11/02/2014 14:53

It is so so difficult isn't it. I almost wish that I didn't have any negative examples to share, but it wouldn't be fair and honest not to say that it never happens. But that is very different from saying that it is likely to happen. The odds are still very much in your sons favour, not only from sheer odds of getting an offer after interview, but that clearly he has got you backing them all the way. There were plenty of RL parents I know who didn't seem to realise that there would be a reasoning test at Whitgift for example. I suspect that if you read enough of the threads on here, you'll probably know the name and birthdate of each of the infamous peacocks.

Afraid that my mantra is "whatever happens you are definitely going to school next year".

Brownsugar3879 · 11/02/2014 19:56

Hello everyone. I hope we are all bearing up as much as we can. I'm getting really really nervous.

mummyinatizz · 11/02/2014 20:49

thank you for your honesty ladymuck, I don't live in the area and don't know many people at W so this is all very useful info.

AliceLostinWonderland · 11/02/2014 21:40

Mrs S I completely agree with Croydonmum, hang in there...we are here for you and feeling the same anxiety, but have a feeling that your DS will make you proud come Friday.

Just had a quiet cry alone...realising from pooziepuzzle's comment. Graveney was our back up comp...now even that is not possible considering DS only got 97% and we are out of catchment!

Oh I feel do down Sad

MrsSteptoe · 11/02/2014 22:12

Offering you virtual hand-holding, Alice

Do you have any other acceptable states as back-up?

pooziepuzzle · 11/02/2014 22:12

AliceInWonderland I think with a score of 97% there is still a very good chance, especially once waiting lists start moving. I do know a girl one year though who got 100% in the test. Her mum phoned Graveney to see if that would guarantee her a place. She was met with the response, "No , lots of the children get 100%!" she did of course get the place but makes you nervous!

Marni23 · 11/02/2014 22:26

Alice what score did your DS get? Last year 250 was offered on March 1st. The Graveney admissions lady explained on the other thread that they changed the standardisation, hence 'lower' scores getting offers (the raw scores stayed the same). If you're talking about 97% of 282 (highest possible score) that's around 273? I'm pretty sure that will get a place.

AliceLostinWonderland · 11/02/2014 22:59

Marni he got 274/282, NVR 137, VR 137.
MrsS, DS has passed Wilson, Wallington and also sat SGS, Graveney as backup comp. I am sure, as Marni said that it's probably a good enough score, I also know very well that worrying and fretting will not solve anything. I am going through those down-in-the-dumps moment when everything's seems bleak.

Somelikeithott · 11/02/2014 23:02

Mrss, Alice, mummyina, and everyone else, the odds really are in your favour. Seriously, the change in the grammar exams process, now means most people who passed will have an offer, about 500 got through to 2nd stage and there are about 400 places. This has a knock on effect on those who really want indies.

So majority of DSs didn't make it to the 2nd round of grammar exams. This is probably one of the reasons why W & T have had 'more applicants than usual' this year ( as well as it being a bulge year). Assuming they haven't invited more people than usual for interviews ( which I don't think they have done), then once you've made it this far the odds are definitely in your favour Also there shouldn't be that many people who didn't get into grammars now needing the indie back-up. If this makes sense.

I believe last year we figured the odds of getting a place at T & W, after interview is something like 2/3. Then considering if you sat both schools you can only take up one offer, the odds start to get better for those waitlisted. Even though they do over offer.

Hopefully, you will be the ones posting this next year! All the best. 3 more sleeps.

pooziepuzzle · 11/02/2014 23:08

AliceInWonderland I know how you feel. As the day gets nearer I am becoming more worried/negative about the outcome. My DS has said if he only gets the local comp ( where his brother goes) it will be the worst day of his life! No pressure then.......

JustAnotherUserName · 12/02/2014 06:13

alice rest assured those scores are some if the best possible. For Graveney. 250 is likely to be enough. Well done your DS. It's some backup!!

JustAnotherUserName · 12/02/2014 06:15

poozie my DS has the worst day of his life on a regular basis!
