This is driving me crazy. Having got Wandsworth test result now and DS's score is too low for Graveney. I really need one of the two letters expected Friday to be good news!

LadyMuck · 10/02/2014 16:47

Sorry to hear that JustAnother. Is it a definite no for Graveney, or are you assuming that based on previous years?

I only ask because the very top end of the Kent scores were far more spread out than in previous years, so parents who would have assumed anything less than a maximum score would rule out The Judd are likely to be surprised come March 3rd.

JustAnotherUserName, how do you have Wandsworth test result? Is your DS in a Wandsworth school?

WIPMOM · 10/02/2014 17:12

Got a fwd message in my inbox- dedicating it to all the dear ladies in this forum- also to distract us from counting down to the 14th!
READ THIS -- IT'S MEANT FOR ALL OF US ---- AND IT'S SO TRUE

A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot humid day, drinking iced tea and visiting with her Mother. As they talked about life, about marriage, about the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance upon her daughter.

"Don't forget your girlfriends," she advised, swirling the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass. "They'll be more important as you get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you love the children you'll have, you are still going to need girlfriends.

Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with them. And remember that "girlfriends" are not only your friends, but your sisters, your daughters, and other relatives too. You'll need other women. Women always do."

'What a funny piece of advice,' the young woman thought. 'Haven't I just gotten married? Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a married woman, for goodness sake! -- a grownup. Surely my husband and the family we'll start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile!'

But she listened to her Mother; she kept contact with her girlfriends and made more each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another, she gradually came to understand that her Mom really knew what she was talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, girlfriends are the mainstays of her life.

After almost 50 years of living in this world, here is what I've
learned:

Times passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Love waxes and wanes.
Hearts break.
Careers end.
Jobs come and go.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors.
Men don't call when they say they will.

BUT girlfriends are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach.

When you have to walk that lonesome valley, and you have to walk it for yourself, your girlfriends will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end. Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you. Or come in and carry you out. My mother, sister, sister-in-law, "sisters," extended family, and friends bless my life!

The world wouldn't be the same without them, and neither would I.

When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other. Every day, we need each other still.

Love u

I just called Wandsworth. There is a thread on the topic: here where a number was set out

Not told its a no, just a big assumption on the basis of previous scores. He came in the top 9% of all Takers (with a 240 score) when most years it needed to be top 2% (275) and last year top 5% (250) got in.

Last year was seen as being a "strange" one.

JustAnotherUserName · 10/02/2014 17:40

Thanks for good wishes though.

The WT scores are standardised so there can be no "spreading out".

LadyMuck · 10/02/2014 17:49

Ah, OK. There is something bizarre with state school admissions when you need to be in the top 2% to get into a school which also selects on distance, but having realised that we have no guarantee at any of our local state schools, I know it can be this mad! Kent standardise as well but across 3 papers, not 2, and the standardisation is across a theoretical national population rather than those who sat.

Thankfully it is usually easier to get into the independent schools if you are in the top 15%-20% and can afford it.

Thanks JustAnotherUserName will phone tomorrow

Teddingtonmum1 · 10/02/2014 21:54

Hey poozie ,
DS also took WT for practice to be fair could never get him there (not that he'll be in the top 2% anyway ) but have as we already pinned our ribbon to the reeds mast getting a yes would only confuse thing.
Gonna ring tho .....

AliceLostinWonderland · 10/02/2014 23:36

Hi All,

Just a thought - for the indies (especially W/T), once you passed the exams and also gone through the interview, is it likely that the school will reject you? I would have thought not!
Getting to the interview stage means that you have done well enough in the exams, isn't it?

Hipster1 · 10/02/2014 23:38

Yes you can still get a no thanks despite interview and passing exams. I know of at least three cases. It's harsh for such young kiddies.

AliceLostinWonderland · 10/02/2014 23:57

Shock oh dear!

pooziepuzzle · 11/02/2014 07:10

AlSo know two boys who got interviews at W but still got a 'no'

LadyMuck · 11/02/2014 07:14

Up until a few years ago I would have said unlikely, but we saw some real shocks across ds1's friends, with his best friend getting interviews and co curricular assessments at 3 schools, but getting 3 no's. Very unusual I would say, but it definitely happens. I haven't read through last year's thread recently but I remember that certainly on that one, or perhaps the year before, some MNers saw their ds get to interview but no offer.

With ds this year, he sat for 3 and has had 3 interviews, but judging by the Q and As at one of his schools I suspect he may not get an offer from one school, though I am expecting offers from 2.

That said, I wouldn't want to scare anyone off altogether. There is a huge amount of movement across the schools from Friday onwards, and for those especially who are looking for a full fee place it is often possible to get a place eventually by tenacity and holding one's nerve (after all your son has passed their exam). Bear in mind Whitgift and Trinity year 6 boys sat for the grammars for example, and so there may be some existing boys who will give notice by the end of this term.

OP posts:
basildonbond · 11/02/2014 08:05

We've know boys rejected (sorry, horrid word) at 10+, 11+ and 13+ including boys who'd had co-curricular assessments so it does happen I'm afraid - only one boy left W at the end of y6 for the grammars so that doesn't have a huge knock-on effect on the numbers

However given the number of applicants and number of places there will be a place for everyone come September even if it's not your first choice

basildonbond · 11/02/2014 08:09

That should have said one boy in ds1's year

SoupDragon · 11/02/2014 08:14

Unlike some other schools I think that Whitgift offer a certain number of bursaries, and then you get what the table indicates

I think they do have a pot of money per school. I believe an OP head regularly overspent hers in the past.

LadyMuck · 11/02/2014 08:29

In the current year 8 group, of the 44 boys who started Trinity in year 6, 12 left to go for the grammars, so it will vary by yeargroup as well as school I guess. There were a significant number of boys in Whitgift and Trinity uniform at the Wilsons and Wallington exams this year. I'm assuming those a very co-operative boys as there is no way I could have got either of mine to sit 10+ and then 11+ too.

OP posts:
LadyMuck · 11/02/2014 08:30

"Those are very cooperative boys"

Siri is wonderful for posting, most of the time...

OP posts:
MrsSteptoe · 11/02/2014 09:44

Not necessarily answerable, but I may as well ask it, since I can't think about anything else: in the case of those children who got 3 interviews but received no offers, were they all outright rejections, which presumably are never going to convert to a place, or waiting lists? I ask because the movement up till September is fairly irrelevant if the schools reject after interview, as opposed to waitlist.
As you can see, I'm still fixated on my doomladen scenario, and the idea that "he will be in a school in September come what may" merely conjures up visions of DS in the uniform for the closest undersubscribed state school, not having got any of our CAF choices either.

Seeline · 11/02/2014 10:00

Bear in mind Whitgift and Trinity year 6 boys sat for the grammars for example, and so there may be some existing boys who will give notice by the end of this term.

No boys left T last year at the end of Y6 to go to grammars. I think only 1 left to return to his home country. So agree, not many spare places up for grabs I'm afraid.

AliceLostinWonderland · 11/02/2014 10:02

I am in same thought and situation, until I posted yesterday, I was under the impression that once interviews over, we had a foot in Confused!

Just found out DSs Wandsworth test results, we are out of borough, he scored 274 out of a possible 282. Not sure if that is good enough or not.

Hipster1 · 11/02/2014 10:13

Of the boys I know of they were outright rejections. However, please do not worry because the boys did secure a school they wanted. The rejections I know of were for schools that, in their case at least, were not first choice. DS best friend got rejected for W but got offered T. However, his parents didn't really like W and felt T was a much better fit. Perhaps that showed in interview?

JustAnotherUserName · 11/02/2014 10:36

Alice - last year 250 would have been good enough on March 1st. 274 in previous years would have just been outside (275) on 1st March but would have got in (270) on 1st Sept after the shake-down.

My guess (but only a guess) is you'd get an offer this year if last year is the sign of a start of trend of the "better" WT applicants beginning now to look elsewhere en mass (but may not be)

Well done your DS!
