How to thank teachers

kmg1 · 10/01/2004 20:11

The 'teachers' thread has left me feeling really fed up.

My boys attend a fantastic (state) school, and the staff there are ALL absolutely BRILLIANT. I want to thank them and encourage them and make them realise they are appreciated by me. I try to do this - obviously we sent Christmas prezzies and cards with notes in ...

Clearly teachers get some satisfaction from seeing the progress the children make, but I hate to think that my boys' teachers might think that we regard them in the way some posters on here regard their teachers.

So ... on Thursday ds1 came home with a little leaflet about the forthcoming term's work (Year 2). And it was fantastic - brief, but extremely informative, and very well put together. Both dh and I commented how helpful it is. ... Also on the first day of term he had written a book review for her (unrequested), and she read it, and wrote 3 or 4 really inspiring sentences for him about it, and about books/reading in general - on the first day of term - I'm sure she had plenty of other things to do with her time ... I don't see ds1's teacher at all during the week unless I seek her out specially. Should I seek her out specially to thank her and comment, or is that too creepy? I could put a note in his reading book, but that seems even more formal and uncomfortable.

So you teachers out there - do you get thanked/encouraged enough/at all by parents. What do you think?

oops, sorry

donnie · 12/01/2004 21:42

oh Lord, I have just caught up with THAT thread...psycho city!!! well girls all I can say is....actually I am speechless ( a rarity I can assure you)!.It is tempting to add comments to it but what is the point? you can't reason with total nuttiness plus there is no point dragging out the pain for everyone.Hulababy, everything you wrote on the thread was reasonable and non abusive so take heart. My questions weren't answered by THAT person either - she can't answer them. But I have met parents like that before and I realised after a while that the cause of the dislike, no matter what I or any other staff did, was actually jealousy and a very deep rooted sense of inferiority. So there you go.Mines a double bottle of house red please. plus straw and whisky chasers. And don't forget the packet of ten silk cut!!!!

Hulababy · 12/01/2004 21:42

Don't let it get to you hmb; the poster(s) isn't worth it. Some people's views will never change as they only hear what they want to hear.

Anyway - I am really bad as I may not even go in tomorrow. So uncommitted I am that I have just spent half the evening planning lessons - in loads of full detail - to e-mail in just in case I have to go to the doctor's first thing.

tamum · 12/01/2004 21:54

It did occur to me that the reason she's not welcomed at school as a helper might not just be her lack of qualifications

Hulababy, I'm so sorry you've been stressed about it. You've been unfailingly courteous. I on the other hand, have turned into a total bitch . I do hope you get better soon, and start to realise how appreciated you are.

fio2 · 12/01/2004 22:08

tanum!!!!!!

hmb · 13/01/2004 06:29

Hugs to you Hulababy. Take things easy and I hope that you feel better soon.

There is a great posting on THAT thread by marthamoo. It was so sweet and supportive it almost made me cry. If you are feeling down, have a look.

Bad teacher here, and feeling guilty...but ill Made decision to go to the doctors and not school. I am sure this is now more than a cold as I simply hurt all over my face and can't get rid of it. I have, however, sent in all my lesson plans in full so hopefully the pupils will be just fine. Doesn't stop me feeling bad though

JJ · 13/01/2004 08:00

Sorry you feel so ill. Have you tried taking a strong decongestant? Sometimes that and blowing my nose like an insane woman (pretend you're trying to shoot your brain out your nose) helps diffuse the pain a bit.

Just a note to say that I'm feeling great this morning. Hmb's story about her class doing so well brought back some good memories for me -- this morning I feel invincible. Thanks hmb!

JJ · 13/01/2004 08:01

Oops, "good memories for me from when I was a student in high school and had some extraordinary teachers"

Hulababy · 13/01/2004 08:09

I think I have tried everything JJ Never felt so bad. My mum has sinusitus before Christmas and it does seem more lie that. I am hoping the doctor can prescribe antibiotics and I can shake it off once and for all.

fisil · 13/01/2004 08:22

Hope the doctor sorts you out hulababy (ooerr missus). Sounds horrible.

I love you lot, and gets loads of support here. But right now the unsupportive people round here are making me wonder whether this is the worthwhile leisure pursuit it once was.

suedonim · 13/01/2004 09:42

Poor you, Hulababy. Dd1 gets sinusitis and it is miserable, she can hardly lift her head off the pillow in a bad attack. A/b's help her very quickly, within 24-48hrs. Hope you've seen the dr by now and are snuggling down in bed with a hot toddy!

Hulababy · 13/01/2004 10:05

Thanks all! Skiving teacher back Been to doctors and it is sinusituus, topped up with a temperature that keeps rising. Been given instructions to stay off work and not drive this week, and lots of a/b to take for next 10 days, and told to alternate nurofen/paracetamol for the pain. Just arranged for DH to take DD to nursery tomorrow (near my work, not here unfortunately) so I can have a rest and relax. MIl will collect her afterwards. Already off Thursday anyway as DD has to go to Dental hospital - Dh will sort that now too.

Just have to phone school now and sort some lessons out. Going to have nap with DD later and then laze around rest of time.

Love the computer as head only hurts if I move it. Computer doesn't involve head movement

fisil (and others) - please do not go; we need some of the nice people to stay around Don't let things like this spoil your enjoyment online. I am determined not too, even if I get stressed at times. Please stay

Thanks SHead.

Hulababy. Hope the drugs work, and do what the doctor says! I know how you feel, I hate missing school.

I wasn't threatening to leave, don't worry, my addiction is perfectly intact. I was more feeling a lack of enjoyment, I guess.

Hulababy · 13/01/2004 11:14

Your ds sounds lovely SHead; does he want to be in my class

Currently writing lesson plans (slowly ) to send into school for tomorrow and Thursday.

Hulababy · 13/01/2004 11:21

Now had e-mail from moderator to say my messages on THAT thread have been deleted, as I requested. I hope it now is so jumbed and makes less sense that it is killed off.

I remember that programme; Dh and I couldn't stop laughing at the Palaeontologist comment from the little boy!

emsiewill · 13/01/2004 18:08

I posted this on "the other" thread, but thought I'd put it here as well, so that those teachers who are boycotting that one (and I don't blame you) could see it.....

Just read all of this thread and wanted to add my support for the teachers.

I see it as part of my "job" to support the school, and the things my children do in school. I would imagine that if a child constantly hears her parents saying that the school is failing her and her teacher is no good, then the child will believe it, and therefore will not get anything from the school / teacher....a self-fulfilling prophecy.

There are a couple of things about dd1's teacher that I am not keen on - but I would never say that to / in front of her, because the school and teachers are, on the whole, excellent.

So a big thanks to teachers for doing a very difficult job with so much enthusiasm - I know I could never do it.

popsycal · 13/01/2004 18:57

hehehehehe
have really enjoyed this thread too
After the day I ahve had dealing with a horirble social services case at work, I just find THAT thread laughable!
Robin - please do post how you would thank a good teacher.....I would be very interested to read your views....
