How to thank teachers

kmg1 · 10/01/2004 20:11

The 'teachers' thread has left me feeling really fed up.

My boys attend a fantastic (state) school, and the staff there are ALL absolutely BRILLIANT. I want to thank them and encourage them and make them realise they are appreciated by me. I try to do this - obviously we sent Christmas prezzies and cards with notes in ...

Clearly teachers get some satisfaction from seeing the progress the children make, but I hate to think that my boys' teachers might think that we regard them in the way some posters on here regard their teachers.

So ... on Thursday ds1 came home with a little leaflet about the forthcoming term's work (Year 2). And it was fantastic - brief, but extremely informative, and very well put together. Both dh and I commented how helpful it is. ... Also on the first day of term he had written a book review for her (unrequested), and she read it, and wrote 3 or 4 really inspiring sentences for him about it, and about books/reading in general - on the first day of term - I'm sure she had plenty of other things to do with her time ... I don't see ds1's teacher at all during the week unless I seek her out specially. Should I seek her out specially to thank her and comment, or is that too creepy? I could put a note in his reading book, but that seems even more formal and uncomfortable.

So you teachers out there - do you get thanked/encouraged enough/at all by parents. What do you think?

Hiya! Just to show you some of us are nice to teachers ... I was in school today (helping), and fully intended to collar ds1's teacher to say the thank you discussed below. But she sought out me to say thank you for the Christmas present and particularly for the note I wrote in the card ... nope, I can't remember what I wrote either! But she was rather emotional, so it was clearly appreciated. ... So I then felt I couldn't say another thank you - it would be too creepy. Will have to make a mental note to say another thank you later in the term.

PS I always try not to make individual comments on Mumsnet, but Robinw's views on the other thread really are bonkers, and completely unrepresentative of the general perception of teaching staff (IMO )

I had an emotional day in school as well. I spent the day telling the kids how well they had done in the last Modular examination, and how proud I was of them. It was a great day!!

JanH · 12/01/2004 17:20

Didn't they know yet? God, they must have been thrilled!

hmb · 12/01/2004 17:36

Most did, but some had missed lessons last week. We got the results on Wedneday, late in the afternoon, after we had finished teaching. Most of the classes with results are taught by me on Monday and Wednedays, so this was my first chance to see them as a class and tell them how well they had done. It was great. I gave them all mini mars bars as well! (big kid, me)

Oh god, I've just caught up with the other thread, but I just can't trust myself to post on it (plus I don't want to bump it any further). Heaven help us, how can you argue in the face of such pig-headed obstinacy, illogicality and use of sweeping generalisations??? So "they" feel threatened by unqualified people helping out then do "they". Funny that, the time I and many other mumsnetters spend at our local primary schools helping out must be a figment of our collective imagination. I had obviously misheard our head every time she made a plea for parents to jump through all the Disclosure Scotland hoops so there could be more helpers. Aarrrgggghhh.
Special mentions:
dinosaur for pointing out that the same poster previously wanted violent pupils excluded (but only for violence to other children, not to the teachers, who have only themselves to blame, natch)
hmb for the "social reasons my arse" comment.
Good on you all!

popsycal · 12/01/2004 18:45

please post tamum - please do!!
!I think she just thinks its the teaching 'mafia' against her and the rest of the world!

fio2 · 12/01/2004 18:48

was it all against poor hula? she sounds lovely

popsycal · 12/01/2004 18:53

no - just against all teachers
every single one of the life wreckers
in the world

popsycal · 12/01/2004 18:53

oooh i am not bitter am i

fisil · 12/01/2004 19:06

Sorry ladies, I've just booted it to the top again - I was trying to be reconciliatory - not sure whether it will work, though.

Hulababy · 12/01/2004 19:10

Just posted my last post of THAT thread. Hopefully the rest of my earlier posts will disappear soon. For some reason MS all deleted a selection of them. I refuse to get so stressed out by comments on a website I visit in my relaxing time.

Thank you fio! It was aimed at every teacher. Apparantly we are all the same reagrdless.

Hulababy · 12/01/2004 19:29

I am currently doing my plans for tomorrow. I aam even considering the worst thing of all - should I ven me going in tomorrow considering the state I am in (suspect sinusitus, need to see doctor, v. bad headache, dizzy, sick, etc.). Regardless the lessons have to be planned, and no one is going to do it for me....

popsycal · 12/01/2004 19:33

You know how uncommitted you are hula so it wouldn't be the first time that you are pulling a sicky when there isn't really anything the matter with you
I am having to write 2 full lesson plans - 2 sides of a4 a la teaching practice for lesson obervsations tomoroow
9:05am - open classroom door
9:05am and 10 seconds tell pupils to log on then come and sit on the carpet
9:05am and 40 secs shout at Jack for sticking the microphone up his nose and strangling adam with the headphone wire...etc etc

Hulababy · 12/01/2004 19:38

I know Popsy Maybe it'd be better to go and throttle a child instead as my patience is so low when feeling this bad. And I could pass all my germs ontot he kids so they miss school too. That'd probably make me a better teacher though.

Good luck with the planning; sounds fun

We have to have written plans for most of our lessons now as it is in 'serious weaknesses' and we open to observations at any time from senior management, HoD or the LEA. HMI are ack in before Easter for another 2 day inspection.

emkaren · 12/01/2004 20:00

I have come across robinw in the past on several breastfeeding threads, where she likes to storm in , come out with some completely ridiculous arguments against the usefulness of breastfeeding, then accusing anybody who disagrees with her of being a b/f mafiosi or worse, nazi - which I find highly insulting. But the worst thing for me that after writing these infuriating posts she announces that she'll enjoy those threads in the future, so that she never actually answers any of the points/questions made against her. What kind of debating is that?
She really is one to make your blood boil - I've decided to stay out of her way in the future!
And to all teachers: I used to be one of you and gave it up because I couldn't cope anymore. Have nothing but admiration for the whole profession!

popsycal · 12/01/2004 20:05

emkaren - that is really useful to know about thanks!!!
i suspected that...

emkaren · 12/01/2004 20:07

Sorry meant AVOID those threads

JanH · 12/01/2004 20:12

Actually the last time she enraged everyone on a BF thread someone complained to mumsnet and she disappeared for a bit...I try to stay out of her way too, emkaren .

popsycal · 12/01/2004 20:23

its gone from the top 25!!!hurrah!

Hulababy · 12/01/2004 20:23

Yeah! Let's have a drink

JanH · 12/01/2004 20:25

I already was!

hmb · 12/01/2004 21:37

That is very interesting information, thak you for posting it.

I've just got back from my evening job teaching adults. See, I'm such a terrible person that I'm not satisfied with screwing up the furtures of kids,I and go and do it to adults as well!

Some of the points made just beggered belief, and I shouldn't have let her get to me! But I was so flipping insulted I couldn't let the nonsense go unchallanged. It is interesting that she hasn't answered my question about , if one parent is crap, does that give me the right to tell you that you are a crap parent.

Ho hum, off to bed....and I've got 3 sets of books to mark tomorrow night.
