Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

Hi all, another Surrey mum here, waiting for the 1st of March.

We should be OK, but you never know....I won't relax til I see the e-mail.

GORGEOUSX · 23/02/2011 13:33

Hi Cointreau (Love your name). Come and sit down.... here Wine

DameEdnaBeverage · 23/02/2011 13:59

Miniwedge - when do the results come out on the day? First thing or later?

mummytime · 23/02/2011 14:02

Nope! And last year was fine because I'd already got my PFB in. I have my fingers crossed for you.
If you have spaced your families correctly it is usually easier after the PFB.

GORGEOUSX · 23/02/2011 14:32

Thanks Mummytime. The sibling rule doesn't apply to us as DD's school scrapped it a few years ago. Sad

GORGEOUSX · 23/02/2011 14:35

DameEdna It sounds as if you get them later in the day 'cos Miniwedge said 'after close of business'.

We get ours at 5.00p.m. supposedly; I'm guessing the system will have crashed by 5.05.

miniwedge · 23/02/2011 16:51

Yup, we get the results from 5.30 pm onwards, they send out the emails in batches.

If you registered the caf online you can log in from 00.01 on march 1st to see what school you have been offered but you won't get eleven plus scores and rankings until the evening.

I'm a postal gal this year so no idea what school until either I get the results email or get the envelope....

Have heard the rumours about redbridge but thankfully am not caught up in that.

CointreauVersial · 23/02/2011 17:15

GORGEOUSX - reading back through the thread, I see your DD is at Nonsuch. How's she finding it? I am planning to put DD1 in for the exam next year, but we're out of the borough, so she has to be "top 80" or something to get in. Good luck at getting your DD2 in, I can see it must be double-stress waiting for the results, as she will want to follow her big sis, I guess.

DS1's application is this year, and we haven't put him in for any of the grammars, as that environment wouldn't suit him, but as I said earlier, he will hopefully get into the non-selective Surrey school we've chosen. And DD1 can follow him there if she doesn't get into Nonsuch.

Too early for Wine, maybe later!!!

MrsGrahamBellForTheSkiSeason · 23/02/2011 17:17

so do they do it at cob to avoid getting calls from irate parents till tehy've valmed down the next day? Seems a bit cowardly to send 'em then scarper out the door...Grin

CupAndSaucer · 24/02/2011 07:40

I think that's exactly why they do it MrsGrahamBell Grin

Only just found this thread but will be popping in. We're out of catchment for all our choices so I've been losing sleep for weeks!

DameEdnaBeverage · 24/02/2011 10:43

My ds has SN and I have had to fight to get him a statement in time for transfer to secondary. Am so relieved I did as he couldn't go to local school following bullying and all the bullies are going there. Even his HT advised us not to send him there. He really needs a fresh start so will be going to a school further away where he knows no-one but this is what he wants and he is really happy about it.
Hope you all get what you want on the 1st too!

GORGEOUSX · 24/02/2011 10:44

5 days to go......... Shock

Also agree with MrsGrahamBell - are you waiting for results too?

Cupandsaucer take a seat; as you are out of catchment for all your choices you'd better forego your tea? and have Wine Wink

GORGEOUSX · 24/02/2011 10:58

DameEdna Well done to you! I completely agree that your DS needs a completely fresh start, otherwise all the 'baggage' goes with him.

My DD1 was not bullied but she was definitely not valued by her 'friends' at primary school and she was excluded from a lot of stuff.

When she went to Secondary School, not one of her 'friends' got into her school, and she didn't know a single girl in her class.

I told her she could be anybody she wanted to 'be' as no-one knew her; She is very very happy now - that was some years ago. She made lots of new friends and they are all very good friends to her, and very nice girls.

There is nothing better than a clean slate IMO. Do come back and let us know how your DS gets on.

DameEdnaBeverage · 24/02/2011 11:20

Thanks Gorgeous.Glad things worked out for your dd. Our fingers are crossed for ds and the new school seem very positive about the help they can give him. It has to be better than the alternative anyway. Will let you know how it goes.

GORGEOUSX · 24/02/2011 11:22

Cointreau Thanks for asking; my DD1 is very happy at Nonsuch - it's an excellent school - and she is doing extremely well.

She is very suited to the environment there, as she is very studious and, ambitious is the wrong word, but certainly she wants to do very well and have a career.

Although DD2 wants to join her, Im not sure that it's the right school for her at all; although she is extremely bright she is NOT studious and I fear the competitiveness among the peer groups will not suit her; I also worry that she won't want to do the amount of homework needed to keep up.

So we are leaving it in the lap of the Gods, so to speak. Confused

If your DD gains a Top 80 place, I would have thought she'd be very suited to Nonsuch - what year is she in?

CointreauVersial · 24/02/2011 12:55

GORGEOUSX - DD1 is in Year 5, very self-motivated and in top sets, but may not measure up to prep-schooled and tutored kids!!

Did you tutor yours? Any tips for the exam?? I need to get to grips with it all soon, as the exam is in September, isn't it?

Your DD2 sounds very like my DS1, who is in Year 6. He would hate the competetive/academic atmosphere, hence we didn't chose a grammar for him.

Major stress, all this waiting. DS1 is counting the days too.

GORGEOUSX · 24/02/2011 15:59

Cointreau DD1 was not tutored - I bought a pack of 4 practise test papers and that was all she did. I WAS UNBELIEVABLY NIAVE!

When I look back I feel incredibly guilty and think thank goodness she got in - not through any help from me that's for sure.

Having said that, it was a different exam then - 5 years ago - a maths test, which covered everything they'd done at school in year 5 and a verbal reasoning test. Both DDs are avid readers and always have a book on the go and that definitely helps with verbal reasoning. (DD1 still thought the VR test was extremely hard).

This time round it was a verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning test and they were both extremely hard, by all accounts.

I bought some books that teach non-verbal reasoning and I tutored her myself, plus she did practise papers over the course of about 6 months. Her peers were doing FAR more than that and I must say only a few failed the test!

Overall 1400 girls sat the test and 661 passed; as there are only 180 places we don't hold out much hope.

Your DD is obviously Nonsuch material but if you don't tutor her she will be greatly disadvantaged. There was a time when intellect alone would get you a place - it's a different ball-game now, unfortunately.

Yes, the test is in September for your DD, but Nonsuch are changing it again; they are introducing an English test, as well as the VR and Non-VR, so I'm guessing it will be harder still! Shock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2011 16:12

I am getting nervous - all comps here so no tests and all the schools are good. Managed to get this far without anxiety hitting. dd loved our first choice school as did I.

Been talking through the advantages of the other two schools - one is in easy walking distance, the other most of her friends will go to. Won't be the end of the world by any means if there isnt a place but I reallyreally would still like it for her though.

5 days and one hour to go.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2011 16:13
OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2011 16:16

Found it - filed it under 'school' Astonishingly logical for me!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2011 16:20

I was fine til I spotted this thread today.
