Thought it would be nice to start a support thread on here about the wait for our DC getting into secondary schools. Anyone else glad the tests are all over?

LadyWellian you're right, our town has one comp for the town and surrounding villages. The real problem is that some schools are not as good as others, although I think this can be a self fulfilling prophecy if many of the more able pupils are sent to schools that are selective. However, I understand that people are forced to make these choices because of catchments. Although I am against the selective system I know I wouldn't want to send my lot to an OFSTED failing school if they could get into a grammar. Needs must I suppose.
Does no one else think it would be better to do away with the selective system?

CupAndSaucer · 28/02/2011 18:00

23 hours......

GORGEOUSX · 28/02/2011 18:05

Asinine My DD1 is extremely studious - some may call her a 'geek'. She goes to a Superselective school where she feels very comfortable, and is surrounded by similar girls. The atmosphere is one of serious study and wanting to do well - there is no 'messing about' or teasing for doing well, and wanting to do well.

Were there no selective schools, I have no doubt that a) she would not be doing so well (She's predicted to get 12 A* GCSEs) and b) she would not be happy, because she would not be 'like everybody else'. IMO DC want to be 'like everybody else'. They don't want to stand out. She would be miserable at the local comp.

DD2 on the other hand is not suited to that environment. She wants to go to the same school as DD1 because she, naturally, wants to be with her sister and 'prove herself' because she thinks we'll be proud of her. But the reality is that she would be much happier at the local comp because she's not studious and she won't go the extra mile for anything; So we're not really nailbiting about that. We feel that she'll be happy at the local comp and it will suit her, but she wants to be with her sister!

I just think it would be a real shame if there were no selective schools to cater for the DC who are more studious and 'bookish'.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2011 18:20

there are no selective schools here Gorgeousx and we have been told dd is exceptionally able in some areas by her school. So, we are going to do the best with what we've got. We are lucky though with the schools we have.

nymphadora · 28/02/2011 18:33

Marking my place. Still no idea how I hear though

DameEdnaBeverage · 28/02/2011 18:35

Good luck to you all for tomorrow.
miniwedge am in same county so fingers crossed especially for you!

weblette · 28/02/2011 19:05

Double-checked.... E-mail at 5pm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2011 19:19

we are all going to combust at this rate!

lilacisinlove · 28/02/2011 19:26

I have to log into the council website at 5pm tomorrow. Won't stop me looking at lunchtime and after school in case it happens to be there early!

Lucycat · 28/02/2011 19:41

OhYouBadBadKitten we don't have selective schools here either and I do wonder whether most of the schools are better for that - you don't get the 'haves' and 'have nots'. My dd 's literacy is her strength (50/50 on practice SATs - proud mummy Grin)and I just hope that she is still as enthused at the secondary as she is at the moment.

still feeling a bit sick in my mouth.... Smile

GORGEOUSX · 28/02/2011 19:44

OYBBK I'm guessing then that if there WAS a selective available to you, you'd try for it - which you wouldn't be able to do if they were abolished. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2011 19:44

I think slective schools is a tricky one - I dont really know the answer :)

do you reckon it might come early? Got an osteo appt tomorrow but perhaps I should have booked it for Weds as I'm so tense. Didnt think i would be like this at all - thought i would be all calm and rational.

GORGEOUSX · 28/02/2011 19:47

here, have Wine

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/02/2011 19:51

Good plan!

(you know when this thread makes it into the nationals there are going to be a lot of people who really believe we have all been sozzled for the last few weeks)

GORGEOUSX · 28/02/2011 19:52

LOL!

southofthethames · 28/02/2011 20:19

Good luck all parents and kids. It's a tough time!

Fivecentsplease · 28/02/2011 20:22

They sent ours out a day early here - had forgotten all about it, and thought it was a letter calling him for a jab or something! Useless mum, or what!

RunAwayWife · 28/02/2011 20:26

Well DS1 is already at our first choice school, we have a letter of recommendation and all forms signed by our Vicar (church school) so we should get in, sadly I have been worrying that it might not be the best school for DS2 as only 2 of his friends have applied, it is a bus ride away from home and DS2 seems so little.

Think I have Precious second born syndrome, please slap me

HappyHome · 28/02/2011 20:38

RunAwayWife - I know that as soon as I get over the shock of which school we've been allocated then the worry about DS actually going will kick in Blush

Cornishwitch · 28/02/2011 20:49

Just over 19hrs to go, trying to stay calm but failing miserably....feeling very sick, don't think I will sleep well tonight. Confused

miniwedge · 28/02/2011 21:05

dameednabeverage thank you! Am steadily getting more and more nervous.

Dd is now running a high temperature so will be at home tomorrow adding to the looooong day.

drosophila · 28/02/2011 21:09

candleshoe · 28/02/2011 21:18

candleshoe · 28/02/2011 21:18
