How many of us have DS or DD going into year 6 and so having secondary transfer this year?

How do you feel about it?

DS goes back to school next Monday into class 6.

He has been at same school since Jan 1999, so sort of 7 years this year.

There is one class per year and they are a very close class, have got 26 children.

How do you feel about them entering into their last year at Junior school?

I feel sad that he is going to be leaving.

Is there anybody else who is going through this especially for the first time?

DS doesn't have any younger siblings so when he leaves primary school that will be the end for the family as well. IYSWIM.

Added to this is the secondary transfer issues.

I am sure when it comes to next summer he will be ready to leave as will probably grown up alot by then.

I was just wondering if others were thinking the same as me or whether it is just me being a silly neurotic mother again

I have sewn labels into Jacket & PE kits, & ironed into shirts, trousers, labcoats etc.

Handwritten on swimming trunks.

Now......do I label the rugby socks?????

HenniPenni · 31/07/2006 19:47

Arrrggghhh (frustrated emoticon)

Have spent all day trying to find elasticated waist black trousers for DD, seems that after the age of 10 they are all wide enough around the waist to not need elasticate ones!! One very helpful assistant said she could order me some aged 9-10, but she in a 13-14. She did try some button up ones with a 24inch waist but they just kept falling down!!(and also can't sew, won't sew

MarsLady · 31/07/2006 19:52

Spent a small fortune on DD1's uniform (as well as collecting as much 2nd hand as I could from friend's with dds there). Still have to sort out the undies, socks, tights, shoes and a shedload of sewing to do. I have to stitch her name onto the front of her p.e shirt. Stitch? Me?????????????? I have shakey fingeritis. I don't sew!!!!!!!!!!!

Hallgerda · 31/07/2006 20:46

MarsLady, who says you have to do it? Wouldn't it be a nice educational experience for your daughter, perhaps with the help of a library book on needlework .

HenniPenni, elasticated waist trousers for boys do exist - it seems odd that ones for girls shouldn't. I can see cross-dressing might not be the ideal start to secondary school, but might it be worth seeing if these people do trousers for girls and supply a shop near you?

Milliways, you'd better label the rugby socks if you can't endure the thought of washing some other boy's kit!

(I have to admit I'm not looking forward to this label sewing business - and they're coming in the post in four to seven days! And I've tried following my own suggestion to MarsLady and getting DS1 to do his own sewing, resulting in jagged and puckered shirt pockets, so I'd better do it myself. Aargh!)

rustybear · 01/08/2006 06:51

Milliways - which side of the rugby shirt did you sew the label? As for the socks, 11 year old boys don't read socks anyway - just think yourself lucky if he comes back with two. btw, for future reference, don't bother with the PE shirt with the crest after the first one - ds just had plain white & no-one ever said a word

MarsLady · 01/08/2006 10:56

You're completely right Hall.......... Now..... books on needlework...stitching etc......... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Oh DD1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Time to go to the library!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RTKangaMummy · 01/08/2006 11:08

I am going to try to embroider DS initials on the outside of his rugby shirts and shorts in his house colour {orange}

His socks I have always done the labels on the inside going down lengthways

But after the sock episode in swimming lesson I am not sure how to do it so at least other mums will see that the name is wrong iyswim

I think we are sure to get the wrong ones come home

I've successfully delegated the embroidery on PE gear business to my mum (well, she offered, it would have been cruel to turn her down).

Just as well, as we had a very bossy letter from the head of PE specifying where each PE item was to be marked, in what colour and exactly how big the letters were to be. They helpfully suggested we send all the half-dozen or so items to their nominated printers, inconveniently located in Finchley, to be named at a price of 75p per letter.

And as for buying generic PE stuff, forget it -- the uniform is bright flipping purple. I bought dd1 one of everything new and then went up to the school to go through their second-hand selection, which was a bit grim. But feeling like a desperate bag lady was worth it to get extra shirts, skirts and jumpers for £2 an item rather than the rip-off prices at the specialist suppliers. Grrrr.

But she's so proud of her new uniform, she tries it on at every opportunity. [soppy face emoticon]

HenniPenni · 01/08/2006 14:38

Wayhey, I've managed to locate some trousers for DD, just need to alter the buttons. Ohwell wil have to aquaint myself with the sewing box. All we need to get now apart from shoes and trainers are footy boots, shin pads, sports socks and a mouth guard- then we are all done.

Hallgerda · 01/08/2006 20:37

MarsLady, here is a website your daughter may find helpful - it explains running stitch and chain stitch quite well.

HenniPenni, I'm in the fortunate position that the official school uniform supplier is a sports shop - but that did mean spending even more money in one go!

HenniPenni · 01/08/2006 21:07

Hallgerda, I feel very sick at the thought of spending so much money in one go! Hopefully as DD is the first of 3 DDs to go to secondary at least I can pass the uniforms down (although DD2 thinks she's going to another one that her bestfriend is going to,I think not!)

Milliways · 02/08/2006 20:29

Rustybear - Is there a right side? Put it in pale blue side as there is a label already there. It is sewn in so can be picked out if all wrong!

He has got a printed T-shirt - found out later that only Yr7's have them, but he like it at the moment.

Do they really need indoor trainers? Have heard maybe not but don't want him to be only one etc etc. He has black outdoor trainers & have just got some studded football boots.

How's the Uni apps going? are you getting A level results this summer?

rustybear · 06/08/2006 19:21

Hi milliways - sorry for the long delay in replying, but we're just back from Jersey.
No there's no right side for the rugby shirt - just joking! (Actually since ds stoped rugby in the sixth form, I've appropriated his - they're really comfortable, very warm but not heavy because of the two layers - I wear it for gardening in winter)As far as the trainers are concerned, the important thing is that they are 'non-marking' - ie they don't leave black marks on the gym floor: trainers with pale soles don't, and some with black soles are ok so you might like to check it on your kitchen floor! I was recommended a brand by another mum but I can't remember what it was & anyway this was seven years ago and I think things have moved on a little...
We are awaiting the 17th August with trepidation (on my part at least- ds seems less concerned, but he's very good at concealing his feelings.) Warwick is first choice with Leicester as insurance, for History and politics. I also have dd's GCSE results on the 24th, so the tension won't be over till then.
Which house is your ds going to be in? Ds was County - the burgundy stripe tie.

Milliways · 07/08/2006 22:10

Hi Rustybear. DS has got the Pink stripe of East House!

Seems odd to think that in less than 2 months they will be showing NEXT years potential intake around!

GCSE's & A levels together - that's when the 2yr gap doesn't seem so ideal . Good luck to them both. (Is your DD at Kendrick?)

Hi Milliways

DS has just got his results: A in History & English, B in French, so will be going to Warwick (his first choice) Much relief - now only GCSEs for DD to wait for!
