How many of us have DS or DD going into year 6 and so having secondary transfer this year?

How do you feel about it?

DS goes back to school next Monday into class 6.

He has been at same school since Jan 1999, so sort of 7 years this year.

There is one class per year and they are a very close class, have got 26 children.

How do you feel about them entering into their last year at Junior school?

I feel sad that he is going to be leaving.

Is there anybody else who is going through this especially for the first time?

DS doesn't have any younger siblings so when he leaves primary school that will be the end for the family as well. IYSWIM.

Added to this is the secondary transfer issues.

I am sure when it comes to next summer he will be ready to leave as will probably grown up alot by then.

I was just wondering if others were thinking the same as me or whether it is just me being a silly neurotic mother again

My dd did her cycling proficiency about 6 months ago in the local area and she absolutely loved it and would like to do it again. I wouldn't let her cycle on our roads anyway as they are so busy, but it is good for them to get a bit of road sense I suppose.

By the way, my dd finished her maths yesterday in 15 minutes! She looked all around the paper to see if she had missed a page, but hadn't, so she checked it all and then read her book. I understand that these SATs are structured so that all can do them, but she reckons she got 100% - a bit silly I think really.

Jennypog · 12/05/2006 13:56

Sorry, my computer's playing up

Milliways · 12/05/2006 15:12

Yes - My DS spent 15mins getting the triangle? millimetre perfect (angles & measurements) etc. Said it was very quick.

RTKangaMummy · 16/05/2006 22:00

DS had his medical today and our interview with Head of Lower School he was presented with his House tie with the House colours DS is sooooooooo proud and pleased with it -- as soon as we came out he put it on SmileSmileSmile

He looks soooooo grown up and smart Smile

The downside of this week is this blooming cycle profiency

Yesterday it was 2 hours long in morning and 2 hours in afternoon and today it was 1 hour for each group of 6 children, = 4 hours per day

And the same for rest of week

We feel very sad for him, he was told he could write a newspaper all about what his classmates are doing etc

So yesterday we took photos of his bike and he labelled all of its parts

He was supposed to be able to use the teaching assistant camera to take photos, but she hadn't charged it and now they are riding on the road and so therefore not in school

So anyway I am going to send in his digital camera in with him tomorrow so hopefully he will be allowed to use that

Otherwise he has to have maths and english lessons repeated TWICE A DAY for the rest of the week

AngryAngrySadSadSad

While everyone else is having a fun time riding around on their bikes, which we don't have a problem with BUT after telling him that he could write a newspaper and then making him repeat lessons does NOT seem fair IMHO anyway

OP posts:
roisin · 16/05/2006 22:11

That's really sad he's being asked to repeat lessons RTK. Can't he just sit at the PC and work on his newspaper or something?

RTKangaMummy · 16/05/2006 22:26

That is what we thought was going to happen

but today he just repeated maths and english lessons

They seem to have forgotten him iyswim

I feel so sad for him, all the rest of them are excited about going out on the road on their bikes which we don't have a problem with but they seem to be penalizing him for not cycling -- which IMHO is very unfair SadSadAngry

snorkle · 16/05/2006 22:50

RTKM, Could you keep him home instead? Have a family emergency and take him to see a relative or something. The poor lad really doesn't need extra maths when everyone else is having fun.

RTKangaMummy · 16/05/2006 22:57

I have just said that to DH that he is going to see the head tomorrow morning and if they are going to make him have lessons ALL day and repeats

We are going to collect him at 1.15 so he can come home to write his newspaper and play etc.

I feel that is it like he is in detention for something out of his control

They told him he was going to do the newspaper and now nothing SadSadAngry

snorkle · 16/05/2006 23:04

hope you manage to work out something for him.

RTKangaMummy · 16/05/2006 23:13

Thanks

I hope so too, I just want him to be treated in a fair way

OP posts:
snorkle · 17/05/2006 21:38

What happened today RTKM?

RTKangaMummy · 17/05/2006 23:50

Thanks for asking, snorkle

DH took DS to school and went into the building -

The head was in a meeting but DS teacher was in the entrance area and so DH asked if he could have a quick word

He explained how upset we and DS are about the situation and said that we were not happy about him repeating lessons

She said that he would not be repeating BUT that he couldn't take the photos cos the children were going off site DH said couldn't DS take the photos by the bike sheds which are in the playground -- she said no cos the TA wasn'ty there today but could do it on Thursday

So anyway DS went into school and I collected a very sad boy at end of day

There had been NO FRENCH lesson or ORCHESTRA today because of the blooming cycling -- these are both highlights of wednesdays for DS {French and orchestra are taught by outside teachers}

Tomorrow he has a Trumpet lesson -- which he needs as he is about to try for his grade 2 exam

DH is going to phone up to check that it will happen -- I bet they cancel that as well AngryAngrySad

I tried to make an appointment for him to see the asthma nurse these next few days so we could get him off school but there were no appointments left.

He was so sad, one of the girls who was coming to his party has said she can't now come Sad

So I logged him into his MSN while he was in the bath and one of the other girls came on and wanted to chat to him and so he really cheered up. Smile He told her all about his swimming lesson this evening doing butterfly for 450m, she is a very keen swimmer so he went to bed happy Smile

I just wish I had the guts to ring up and say he is not coming to school Thursday and Friday

OP posts:
snorkle · 18/05/2006 09:01

:( Hope there is trumpet today...I'd keep him home Friday. Say he's sick - sick of their treatment of him if they ask, but they won't.

HenniPenni · 18/05/2006 12:09

Entirely agree with snorkle, if my DD was being treated like this I would deffo keep her off, She's gone to school a happy bunny today as she's doing some clay moddeling!

RTKangaMummy · 18/05/2006 20:59

Well today was more of a success Smile

DH rang up @ 8.00am to check if Trumpet lessons were happening, yes they were but at different times from usual -- which isn't a problem

At 10.30am DH rang again to tell the Head teacher how sad and depressed DS was and to tell her that he {DH} could bring in DS digital camera to use

Anyway Head was on playground duty and would ring back when she got in

So 15 mins later she rang back and said that DS had been taking photos with the school camera this morning and had done interviews of the children about the cycling, for his newspaper SmileSmileSmile

When DH tried to say how sad and depressed DS had been and how this had been the worst week of his time at primary, she basically said it "was a life lesson and he should learn that there were times in life when one is faced with things one can't do, and have to learn statagies to cope with them"

ShockSadAngry

I wasn't surprised really cos that is how she thinks, she thinks he is old enough to not get upset by this

Some of the children have been rubbing salt into the wound iyswim Sad

So anyway, DS was pleased when he came out telling me about the newspaper and the photos etc. Smile

He doesn't know that we have been talking to the Head.

So he will be going to school tomorrow to print it all off, and put it together. They will be apparently be starting the ART project in the afternoon.

This week has been so awful for all of us but haven't been able to tell anyone in RL cos they are all full of how wonderful it is their children are cycling etc.

So sorry about all my rants and thanks for letting me let off steam, it has really helped.

SmileSmileSmile

I'm glad today was more of a success for your ds and he got to work on his newspaper.

But I have to say an approach like that from a primary school does not seem terribly helpful or constructive.

In retrospect would you have chosen to keep him home for the week?

RTKangaMummy · 20/05/2006 15:42

Thanks roisin, perhaps we would have kept him off for the week, but would have needed some guts cos DH is one of the governors.

Yesterday another mum asked me why DS wasn't cycling,

Thank goodness it is saturday and next week is ARTs week.

Well, today we got all the uniform and kit lists etc through the post with the date and times for the visit, found this quite emotional so goodness knows how I'll feel when she actually starts!
Hows everybody else doing?

RTKangaMummy · 18/06/2006 18:28

DS had his residential trip to Isle of Wight last week, and he had a deffo brill time. SmileSmileSmile

Next saturday, he has his introductory morning at senior school, where he will meet the other year 7 boys

They could choose 2 activities from ART, SCIENCE or FOOTBALL

DS has choosen Art and Science, they are 2 of his favourite subjects SmileSmileSmile

How are you guys all doing?????

I'm glad to hear your son's trip to the Isle of Wight went well, RTKM. DS1 has just come back from his school journey to Norfolk - he had a really good time. He has got a part in the Year 6 performance, which he's delighted about as he has only ever been a narrator up to now.

Secondary school induction events (an evening and an afternoon) are in early July, and I've booked a school uniform buying appointment for late July (in order not to give DS1 too much time to grow out of it before he starts!).

RTKangaMummy · 18/06/2006 21:25

Deffo brill on him getting a part in performance -- what are they doing? Smile

I didn't realise you had to book appointments Blush

I think we will be going in early july cos they do a return if grown out of system

Mind you a mum I was talking to the other day said her DS grew 2 sizes during summer holiday Shock

I had ordered 250 name labels from CASHs and they arrived last week Smile

DH went to buy DS new swimming trunks this morning for senior school but also he needed them for swimming this term but we decided we may as well buy them in the correct colour for sept.

We are in aussie and south pacific for summer holidays, so will need to get the uniform before we go

Glad your DS enjoyed his tme in Norfolk Smile

OP posts:
Hallgerda · 19/06/2006 09:32

RTKM, the performance is "Lion King", and DS1 is going to be Pumbaa (I really wish I hadn't told him ages ago that the name means something rude in Swahili Blush).

The school uniform shop for DS1's new school has an appointments system with half hour slots - I don't think all uniform shops have one, so you may very well not need an appointment.

Your summer holiday plans sound very exciting. My great-great-great grandmother's brother was transported to Australia for stealing a pair of socks, a waistcoat and some malt - I can understand the temptation after looking at school uniform prices!
