I have been a fool. What should I do?

I bought a pram on ebay. I got loads of photos and was convinced it was in good order. It's arrived and it is in excellent condition

BUT

it stinks of fags

Now, the listing didn't say smoke free and stupid me didn't check.

I have removed all covers and washed them. They've been hanging out on the line all day and I Febreezed them this afternoon.

But they still smell

What shall I do? feeling like a complete fool and DH is not going to be happy.

oh no how disappointing. I think i would keep them outside even overnight and then maybe get them dry cleaned to see if that helps at all

liquidclocks · 16/04/2007 17:06

Poor you! Horrible smell isn't it? I'd wash them again but but put one of those oxy-clean additives in the wash - that always seems to help with other strong smells.

What kind of pram is it? Do you think you may be able to get different covers for it?

wash them again and use plenty of fabric softner

ceolas · 16/04/2007 17:08

It's a Bebecar. Never seen spare covers.

Dry cleaning? Is that possible? Would it get rid of smell?

It will go eventually, won't it?

oh no. what pram was it? can you soak the covers overnight in the bath. scrub the frame as well.

ceolas · 16/04/2007 17:09

Can't take the mechanics out of the hood either so that couldn't go in the machine.

Soaking in the bath - do you think that might drain the colours misdee?

I had a fur coat dry cleaned and it got rid of a lot of the smell, though not all.
I can't see any reason why they couldn't do the covers as long as they're all removable.

not sure if this will work on stale smoke, but I use febreeze antibacterial fabric refresher (dh is a smoker)

misdee · 16/04/2007 17:10

no, dont make it too hot, just dissolve some fabric soap in the bath and put then covers in to soak. work the water through. rinse under the shower.

the febreeze!

fingerwoman · 16/04/2007 17:10

btw, have you left feedback already? if not then I would mention it, even if you leave positive fb

yes steamers are good

ceolas · 16/04/2007 17:12

I have left positive feedback. She never mentioned it in the listing and I didn't ask. Everything else was great. She was very helpful.

It was the antibac febreeze. (which stinks in itself!)

steamer? [thick confused emoticon]

I was trying to cut corners because I want a bouncy walking pram and a M&P pramette for the car. Can't afford both new. Only paid £100 and it would be over £300 new.

If you do get the detatchable (sp) bits dry cleaned air them very very well afterwards, outside on a washing line, as dry cleaning chemicals are awful.

I would have thought that leaving the pram with the hood up overnight outside would blow away a lot of the smell. You could squirt a lot of air freshner inside it, before you put it outside too - although they are not the best things chemically either!

Best of luck!

if you want to send it down here i can do it for you free of charge. honestly, bad smells are the easiest to deal with

kks · 16/04/2007 17:17

I would have left negative feedback because the woman knew it smelt of strong fags yet she still sold it to you without a word.

I suppose. I used to smoke but gave up last year, i really notice the smell alot more now then when i did smoke.

ceolas · 16/04/2007 17:22

Agree Fio. That's whay I didn;t mention it. People do say smoke free in their listings but I just never thought. She's hardly going to say oh and by the way it honks... I should have checked it out first.

Misdee that is a lovely offer. I'm happy to take your advice here though

Right it's going in the bath overnight for starters!
