I bought a pram on ebay. I got loads of photos and was convinced it was in good order. It's arrived and it is in excellent condition

BUT

it stinks of fags

Now, the listing didn't say smoke free and stupid me didn't check.

I have removed all covers and washed them. They've been hanging out on the line all day and I Febreezed them this afternoon.

But they still smell

What shall I do? feeling like a complete fool and DH is not going to be happy.

Bicarbonate of soda is good at removing smells.

ceolas · 16/04/2007 18:51

The covers are in the bath now. Shall I add some bicarbonate of soda?!

agree bicard is brill, get rid of vomit smewlls very quickly - dont ask!

PeachyChocolateEClair · 16/04/2007 19:23

we have a chair with the same problem (although was freecycle so can't complain) we found covering in good old shake and vac and then hoovering helped loads

debgronow · 16/04/2007 19:39

not sure about putting it in the bath water as it would probably make white powdery stains on the fabric. I would sprinkle loads on the dry fabric leave it as long as you can even a day or two and vacuum it off.
It works great on smelly carpets.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 16/04/2007 19:50

er yes I did mean that actually! PMSL

misdee · 16/04/2007 20:01

if you cdan ever remove the fabric from a buggy, and if you want to risk it, then try the washing machine. if you are going to dump the buggy anyway its worth a try right?

ceolas · 16/04/2007 20:03

Oh god I have put a few spoons of soda bic in the bath.

Right, off to rinse it!

Maybe this is just me, but I wouldn't want to use it full stop, even if I cleaned it enough to stop being able to smell the smoke. It seems to me that if it's a SIDS risk for a baby to have parents who are smokers even if they don't smoke in the house, or for there to be co-sleeping with parents who smoke, even if they're not smoking in bed (which is what I've understood), then that makes me think something in stale smokiness in itself could be a SIDS risk if a baby's sleeping in that situation. No idea if that's right but it's what leaps to mind for me and what would put me right off having a baby sleeping in a pram that had been smoked around so much it smelt. I might be more relaxed about an open buggy a toddler was going into without regularly sleeping in, though.

ceolas · 16/04/2007 20:24

lunarlandingplace.

I hadn't thought of that.

What to do...

lunarlandingplace you are overly paranoid. Wash the covers and they will be fine. I bought a phil and teds with the same problem, did the main seat in the bath and the smaller covers in the machine with a gentle wash.

booge · 16/04/2007 21:39

ceolas it sounds like you got a good deal, a £300 pram for £100, it's just that you've got to do a bit of work on it to get it up to scratch.

ceolas · 16/04/2007 21:40

booge, my DH agrees with you. I just can't help thinking if the worst happened I'd always have it at the back of my mind

Do the toxins in cigarette smoke have a "life" so to speak?

OP posts:
misdee · 16/04/2007 21:41

i think they do have a lifer but thourough washing will get rid of them.

how long till baby is due?

lucy5 · 16/04/2007 21:42

I'm not surprised you didn't think to look if it was smoke free. It's not the sort of smell you would associate with a pram.

MissGolightly · 16/04/2007 21:45

I'm not a medic but as I understood it the recommendation about not co-sleeping with parents who smoke is that smokers are heavier sleepers than non-smokers and there is more risk of them rolling on the baby. But as I say, I'm not a medic so hopefully if that's wrong a doc will come along and contradict me!

Personally when the pram stops smelling I wouldn't worry about using it, but I wouldn't want to use it if it still smelled.

ceolas · 16/04/2007 21:45

Baby isn't due til August. I had some money extra this month and thought I'd See To It.

Thought I'd just stick it in the loft and forget about it...

OP posts:
ceolas · 16/04/2007 21:47

I was genuinely shocked, lucy. I mean I realise smokers have babies, but to actually smoke on the baby

Probably hugely naive of me.
