I'm getting back into my eBaying, massive clear outs will keep me busy over this free listings weekend, wondered if anyone wanted to join me in making Christmas as cheap as possible and having the good people of eBay pay for most of it!

OP posts:
lljkk · 19/10/2012 16:36

I am displeased about FLW because we are away on hols in 2 weeks. I can change most of my listings to 10 days to make it practical, but that's a lot of changes for 100 auctions. 2 hours extra bother, I reckon. Humph.

Thanks for tip about CEX.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/10/2012 21:35

If I schedule things now to start on Sunday night, will they go live for free as it's a free listing weekend?

I usually start everything at 99p so have never bothered with these before!

lljkk · 19/10/2012 21:39

I think you'll get 6 p schedule charge; you have to send the listing live on Saturday yourself to get no fees. You can't use a Turbo listing programme, either.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/10/2012 22:27

Ok thanks.

ontheedgeofwhatever · 19/10/2012 22:27

Can I join in?

I started selling at start of this month and I'm up to £94 so far (after paypal and ebay fees) and I've got another 27 items listed here so am waiting to see what happens.

Still got lots of declutttering to do, I can't believe how much stuff we seem to have

notcitrus · 19/10/2012 22:44

Finally got round to putting description in stuff listed on Sunday - so far a whole £1.99 in bids... lots of baby clothes, which let's face it don't really sell.

here

Also no interest so far on nappies on Clothnappytree - here Any offers considered!

LineRunner · 19/10/2012 22:53

Your photos are all so much better than mine. I think I need a better camera...!

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 21/10/2012 00:16

Only managed to list one thing last week which ends tomorrow, like a numpty I've been using the ebay app to keep am eye on it and not clicked that I'd got several messages in the inbox about it! Just replied to them now, hopefully not too late.

Anyone know if there's a setting I can change so my (android) phone will notify me?

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 08:09

I would like to join again this year. Have already made £500 in the last few months but would like to start again to see what I can raise.

I have some items I didn't sell at the NNS so have put the JJMB stuff and some other bits I might sell for decentish money. Maybe after reading another thread I will change them all to 10 day listings. Mainly baby clothes and some other bits.

lljkk · 21/10/2012 09:47

TeWi do you get emails on your Android? I get email copies of Ebay msgs.

Out of 91 listings ended in last week 18 sold, or 20%, I'm pleased with that :).
Now must get to packing about 15 items.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 09:47

Hello ladies.
I am always tempted to join these threads and see if I can get a few quid for the stuff we don't want anymore.
A q if anyone can answer them quickly........
I have never listed anything on ebay, how do I know the P&P price for items? Do I have to take everything down to the post office to have weighed before I list it?

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 09:58

Silvery - get yourself a plate and some kitchen scales. Weigh the items add a bit for packaging (I add 50g) and then go on the Royal Mail website to postage calculator.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 10:23

Halle That's great! Thanks Grin
So, I've missed this weekends free listing hey?
So now, I go through all my shit stuff, photograph it and wait until the next free listing comes up?

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 10:28

You haven't missed it - it finishes tonight. Am doing mine for 10 days. Fingers crossed I get some buyers.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 11:25

Ok. I have an item listed. Just wanted to do a trial run to see if i could successfully get something up there.
here it is.
Does it look ok?
How will I be notified if someone buys it?

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 11:31

I would boy / girl in the title as people may look for one of the other and this is for both.

You will get an email in 10 days time telling you whether it has sold.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 11:39

Great, thanks for all your help Halle
So this free insertion weekend, that's not for buy now stuff? I'd still have to pay for that?

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 11:45

I think so. You also still have to pay the 10% once an item is sold.

You can do the scheduling trick which I am sure is described up thread so that items can start at a possibly more profitable time.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 11:52

10% of the cost of just the item? So if it sells for 99p I have to pay ebay 10% of that?

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 11:52

Yes you will have to pay 10% of the item.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 12:32

Ok. So the more the item sells for the more I'll pay. Got it.
How does anyone make money selling small stuff?
So got to read these threads!
Have just discovered that it's so much easier to post listings from my phone.

HalleLouja · 21/10/2012 12:57

If you have an Virgin Vie that sells well as they don't make it. Part used toiletries and perfume does well too. Kids clothes I struggle with unless its JJMB or the like.

lljkk · 21/10/2012 13:05

You don't really make money, but try to cost up everything carefully so you're not out of pocket. To keep track mentally, I tend to list the item for start price I can live with and then try to load up the postage with all the fees side of things. Suppose I really want minimum £1 for something that will cost £2.20 with RM to post (small packet price 2nd class 100-750g = £2.20).

(there are online calculators to help you do this part)

So if I charge 2.69 for postage that covers
£2.20 for postage +
20p fixed Paypal fee +
12p (3.4% of (2.69+99p=3.68) = 13p)

  • 10p (Ebay's final valuation fee from the auction itself, 10% of 99p = 10p) = 2.62 total

So buyer pays £3.68, RM gets £2.20, and I get a mahoosive £1.06.

Loading postage to cover fees is a little risky, plenty of people will jump & down screeching how outrageous it is to charge 49p over Royal Mail cost and that private sellers on Ebay are pondscum have no right to charge anything for their time or packaging. Ebay Corp's actual guidance on the matter is pretty fuzzy.

So you could start the auction for £1.49 instead to try to avoid low DSRs for postage rates, but then you have to wait until FLW or take a hit on listing fees. And some people give low ratings on DSRs no matter what you charge, so I can't see point of pandering to folk who have silly expectations.

I think you pay a fixed small fee if you sell stuff on Gumtree. Good alternative for expensive collect-only items in high demand areas. Local freeads, too.

SilveryMoon · 21/10/2012 14:00

lljkk so when you list something, you list it as free delivery?
All sounds very complicated.
I'm just trying to add something through the app on my phone, managed it fine earlier but is now saying handling time is required......wtf?

lljkk · 21/10/2012 14:07

No no, I list it for 99p & £2.69 for postage, mentally I can keep track that if it sells I will get at least £1 out of that.

I could list it for £3.99 with "free" delivery instead to also guarantee my £1 profit. Which actually costs the buyer more but at least buyer can't slam me on the ratings. There is no such thing as free delivery in reality, what a con.
