TTC through Donor IUI or Donor IVF - weight loss spin-off thread

A few of us on the donor IUI/IVF thread have got some weight to lose, and rather than bore everyone else we thought we'd set up a spin-off thread. So, if you're doing or contemplating donor IUI/IVF and also have some weight to lose, join us here, newbies welcome.

I guess we do introductions/goals? I'll start, but obviously share whatever you prefer in your intro.

I'm witch, froze some embryos last year with donor sperm which are waiting for me to save up enough to fund a career change post baby. I'm fortunate in that I don't have loads and loads of weight to lose, but enough that I could so with some supportive friends to do it with.

I don't really like the idea of dieting per se, I think my aim is more around establishing a healthier relationship with food. I read Fat is a Feminist Issue years ago and I probably need to re-read it again now - it's about women's relationship with food. I'd recommend it, or a much condensed book by the same author, Susie Orbach, called On Eating.

My weight has fluctuated over the years, but the band it's fluctuating within is only trending in one direction. This is almost the heaviest I've ever been, I'm too fat for my fat clothes, and my thighs are getting in the way of each other. In BMI terms I'm a little way into the overweight category, but I carry it all on my stomach so I'm quite a way over the recommended maximum waist measurement. I have been offered a seat on the tube and on one occasion asked if it was my first baby Grin

The numbers aren't the be all and end all - for me that point is that I am at this weight because I don't prioritise sleep and activity and compensate with carbs and caffeine! And for some other more psychological reasons which I'll get to, but this is already the longest intro in history.

I'm going to take Saturday as my starting point:
5'9"/1.75m
12st10.5lb/81kg
BMI 26.4
Waist 36"/91cm
Targets, let's see, but I'm guessing somewhere south of 11st/70kg - I'll head in that direction and see how I feel. I'll never be right at the bottom end of the BMI range, I'm broad!

Eating wise - I'm cutting back on high glycemic index carbs and trying to get some more protein in. I know I feel better and less hungry when I'm not struggling from one sugar rush then crash to the next.

Hey folks, wanted to update you to let you know I made the weight for my IVF referrals - i lost 11kg in total over 8 weeks including 4 in Italy! i did it using michael moseys blood sugar diet.

Its really amazing.

  1. eat between 10-6. Nothing before or after.
  2. Eat 800 cals a day, less than 50g carbs per day. Track using fat secret ap which is free.
  3. I fasted for a couple of 36 hour stints - as in total water fast.
  4. Avoid all sugar and flour, if you do this a lot of cravings go away and you are way less hungry.

We should begin treatment in next 18 weeks - thank god!

Bear1980 · 04/09/2017 17:20

Bear1980 · 10/09/2017 19:40

It will be a miracle if I lose weight tonight:

  • AF here
  • are two slices of bun loaf with butter yesterday as well as having about 3 rounds of toast with marmalade
  • 2 jumbo marshmallows on saturday plus pancakes, bacon and syrup
  • KFC on Friday plus a samosa and popcorn
  • about 14 biscuits on Tuesday
  • 2 iced buns on monday

kwick · 13/09/2017 08:28

2lbs on Sad and I doubt the Fruit and Nut, Picnic and Daim bar wolfed down yesterday will have helped any Confused

kwick · 18/09/2017 19:59

Think I am only one on this thread now Hmm 2lbs off this week... have decided not to weigh in anymore when have AF

Bear1980 · 18/09/2017 20:10

I'm still here just not doing very well. I don't know why but I always struggle in tww. Not weighing in this week but need to get back on track for nect week

kwick · 19/09/2017 07:25

bear give yourself a break - the tww is hard enough without putting weightloss in the mix!

I could not sleep at 5ish and watched the thing on ITV where Lisa Riley has lots loads of weight but has a stone of loose skin hanging off her... flipping hope that does not happen to me. She lost weight really fast... hopefully by doing a pound or two a week will mean skin shrinks back naturally Hmm

Apparently it is only 14 weeks to Christmas- I could lose another stone by then! Although I am conscious of the fact that when I start TTC again that might be a bit ambitious as the hormones play havoc.

Bear1980 · 19/09/2017 07:36

Yeah it is hard in general 1 stone before xmas seems realistic. I am trying to get back on track, away for 2 days with work and away for the weekend which makes it difficult. Also feel like I am getting the cold so that won't help cause I just want to eat when I am sick 😷

witchmountain · 29/09/2017 08:50

I'm still here in spirit! I read this book over the weekend - recommended by a mumsnetter on that weird thread where a thin person posted a picture of her lunch and was then ridiculed for it.

It's very much in line with the idea in Fat is a Feminsit Issue (the book i mentioned at the beginning), i.e. If you can get to the point of eating what you need when you're hungry and generally no more then you will lose weight and it will be sustainable. I still think Fat is a Feminist Issue is a great book, but I kind of needed someone to shout encouragement at me in simple sentences, which is pretty much what Josie Spinardi does.

There is an absolutely fascinating section at the beginning about why diets don't work over the long term and in fact are detrimental - she presents some really interesting evidence.

I've been following the suggestions since Monday so early days. I'll pop back to tell you how I'm getting on - let's see what's happened by Christmas!

Well done to everyone on their weight loss, it's so fucking hard! I haven't gone back to see what I'd written at the beginning but I was pretty much back to square one I think!

Am still lurking guys, just not dropping any weight because of the drug regime. Feel like I ve mega stacked it on, but mostly just heavy bloating. Trying to go back to SW to lose a bit before my weight hikes again - with getting bigger for baby (fingers xd)

I ll have a look at the link Witch thanks for sending it x

kwick · 01/10/2017 06:48

Thanks witch I am reluctant to buy another book at this time (so many self-help books gave passed through my possession!) especially as when I follow it SW works for me. However, the last few weeks of home reno stress have really scuppered my efforts (or better said I have sabotaged them). I have given myself a good talking to and hope to be firmly back on the wagon today.

witchmountain · 01/10/2017 20:42

Let’s see how I get on with it Kwick and then I’ll let you know if I think it’s worth following. It’s worth a read anyway for why diets are unsuccessful in the long run. But for now you have a short term goal and SW will serve that purpose. Although reading it might help put the challenges of sticking to SW into context.

The cover is too awful for real life so I’ve got it on Kindle Grin

I made a microwave steam pudding yesterday... for 4 and ate it all. Not proud of myself and my body is not happy either. When the fcuk will I learn?????

witchmountain · 02/10/2017 12:58

Oh Kwick I know that kind of situation and you feel so bad when it happens. (At the risk of sounding like I’m commission, I would recommend the first chapter of the book just to feel a bit less shit about it. It’s about £5 on Kindle.)

Need to find my Kindle first... Lord knows where I put it!

witchmountain · 02/10/2017 16:59

Bear1980 · 11/10/2017 10:41
