TTC through Donor IUI or Donor IVF - weight loss spin-off thread

A few of us on the donor IUI/IVF thread have got some weight to lose, and rather than bore everyone else we thought we'd set up a spin-off thread. So, if you're doing or contemplating donor IUI/IVF and also have some weight to lose, join us here, newbies welcome.

I guess we do introductions/goals? I'll start, but obviously share whatever you prefer in your intro.

I'm witch, froze some embryos last year with donor sperm which are waiting for me to save up enough to fund a career change post baby. I'm fortunate in that I don't have loads and loads of weight to lose, but enough that I could so with some supportive friends to do it with.

I don't really like the idea of dieting per se, I think my aim is more around establishing a healthier relationship with food. I read Fat is a Feminist Issue years ago and I probably need to re-read it again now - it's about women's relationship with food. I'd recommend it, or a much condensed book by the same author, Susie Orbach, called On Eating.

My weight has fluctuated over the years, but the band it's fluctuating within is only trending in one direction. This is almost the heaviest I've ever been, I'm too fat for my fat clothes, and my thighs are getting in the way of each other. In BMI terms I'm a little way into the overweight category, but I carry it all on my stomach so I'm quite a way over the recommended maximum waist measurement. I have been offered a seat on the tube and on one occasion asked if it was my first baby Grin

The numbers aren't the be all and end all - for me that point is that I am at this weight because I don't prioritise sleep and activity and compensate with carbs and caffeine! And for some other more psychological reasons which I'll get to, but this is already the longest intro in history.

I'm going to take Saturday as my starting point:
5'9"/1.75m
12st10.5lb/81kg
BMI 26.4
Waist 36"/91cm
Targets, let's see, but I'm guessing somewhere south of 11st/70kg - I'll head in that direction and see how I feel. I'll never be right at the bottom end of the BMI range, I'm broad!

Eating wise - I'm cutting back on high glycemic index carbs and trying to get some more protein in. I know I feel better and less hungry when I'm not struggling from one sugar rush then crash to the next.

Thats interesting ever I have been wondering about the syns. Some days I have a lot and others i have very few. I wasn't sure if you are supposed to try and eat them or not. I might start looking at some healthy ways to use some syns

Everhopeful76 · 11/07/2017 08:14

I think it's a well reported thing from others on diet. If you restrict the syns the weight loss will be slower. I ve read elsewhere of a 7 syn, 7 glasses of water and I think at least 7 speed foods per day is helping some. Am close to a stone boundary now so trying to have all of them to push thru that, then I have to be on the standard 15 syns per day. I sometimes had 20 because of having a fair amount to lose, should then see the same 3 lbs weight loss for a while then too because of the reduction but up till a week ago was only having up to 10 and it seemed my weight was fluctuating more. It's all so psychological, I want to see the loss being bigger for a time else I get frustrated.
I haven't been doing too well emotionally recently but yesterday I went back to exercise so this should also help x

Bear1980 · 11/07/2017 10:06

I get 20 this week but will probably drop to 15 next week. I don't feel like I have been too strict with myself and have had some crisps and extra cheese and things. I am going to increase my exercise next week, wanted to concentrate on getting into a good food routine first.
I am hoping to lose just over a stine by September

Everhopeful76 · 11/07/2017 11:47

Should b very doable by sept as they suggest a stone is achievable in about 6 weeks. Looks hopeful that I might reach this at 5w!! But we are all different body compositions and motivations. A slower loss over time is going in right direction and is an achievement. Still miss avocado and nuts, only can have occasionally if you want to feel satisfied but yet not feel your ok a diet. I ve really noticed that milky coffee has started to upset my stomach, maybe should just have my 30 g of cheese and ditch the milk completely. Body changes when food patterns are different I guess...

Bear1980 · 11/07/2017 18:16

Also got standing desk at my work for the next couple of weeks so hoping that will burn a few extra calories 😀

pickle162 · 12/07/2017 12:18

One way to lose a bit of weight- 💩💩💩3 x daily before each scan and worry yourself so much you feel like you want to vomit so you don't eat at much 😫

Bear1980 · 12/07/2017 17:14

😂😂😂 pickle

Bear1980 · 12/07/2017 19:47

3.5 off this week, gonna do a bit of exercise this week for a wee boost before my hols. Just need to make sure I don't put on too much when we are away.

pickle162 · 12/07/2017 20:31

Ooh well done bear that's a fab weight loss

kwick · 13/07/2017 08:24

Ever tell me more - you register bigger losses if you use up your whole Syn allowance each day? Shock

Yep no official weigh in this week as I was away. Have weighed myself though and happy to report that I have not gained.

Oh Pickle 🙁

Well done Bear and Ever!!!

So now I am back home I am going to get back to my food routine- scrambled egg & toast for brekkie, fruit and yoghurt/cottage cheese for lunch and salad & fish/chicken for dinner. Halo

juneybean · 13/07/2017 18:12

I've had a bad week again dreading weigh in tomorrow it's most definitely going to be a gain :( just can't get back on it

Bear1980 · 13/07/2017 20:08

It's tough juney do you stay for the class? Sometime that helps get you back on track. Maybe you should set a small weight loss goal for next week it might give you the motivation?

juneybean · 13/07/2017 20:10

Ahh I don't do slimming world, I do calorie counting as I find it usually works for me.

A small goal is a good idea!

kwick · 14/07/2017 17:07

Excellent Kwik theres the evidence then!

I have definitely had better losses when I ate my syns!! 1st week - wasn't on it properly but lost 2lbs, 2nd week, ate my syns, lost 3 lbs, 3rd week wanted a similar loss to week before and therefore restricted and lost 1.5-2lbs, 4th week, felt like I had ate like a pig but lost 3.5 lbs, was having 17-20 syns most days. Now am close to a weight boundary as of next week I ll do 15 syns

Am really struggling with water retention at the moment (Day 26, and period started this afternoon) so my weighing day may get shifted to Tues because I know I will get on the scales and be depressed!!

I have just found the oreos sandwiched with peanut butter icecream. They are small but 6 syns!! They are things of beauty. Yumyum xx

Everhopeful76 · 14/07/2017 17:30

Going to have half an avocado to waste my chocolate quota today, but feel the need to be healthier x

Bear1980 · 14/07/2017 18:55

That's interesting, I have been making an effort to eat my syns this week so will see how that works out at next weigh-in. I feel like I have eaten a mountain of food today

Everhopeful76 · 14/07/2017 20:08

Made a huge error because the 95 pc beef burger was also massively wasteful in syns so no more food today. I ve also had 7 veg and 3 fruit so that's lots of speed but over synned due to avocado and beef mountain
No tunnocks tea cake for me tonight, but jam and scone Sunday for Wimbledon final

pickle162 · 14/07/2017 20:29

I ate a Chinese, now feel sick! Think but much for my tummy after the week of upset. Oh well was still yummy 😋

kwick · 15/07/2017 07:00

Ever STEP AWAY FROM THE OREOS!!!!

My syns often go on oil and butter....

Pickle was wildly jealous of your chinese - I had a can if beef ravioli... definitely not as nice as spaghetti hoops.

pickle162 · 15/07/2017 07:24

It was yummy 😋 but should have stuck with scrambled egg and a muffin. Never mind :) think I was so fed up of spending all my money on Menopur and pregnyl alternatives
You can beat spaghetti hoops

You all got much planned for weekend?

pickle162 · 15/07/2017 07:26

Juney I Do MyFitnessPal when I'm actually on track.find it so easy to follow and means I can have anything-within reason- head hush isn't in it at the moment

kwick · 16/07/2017 10:28

So Pickle we painted the inside of the shed yesterday and today a pot of retail therapy and then I am making lunch for us all (Fideua - sort of Paella but with pasta) Grin
What about you?

pickle162 · 16/07/2017 10:31

Was out for lunch yesterday to a Greek restaurant which was lovely and then didn't need to eat for rest of day was so so full. Then did trigger wahooo!
Today I've got to get a few bits for my mums birthday and then I plan to get back in my pjs and watch tv and slob & sleep ready for big day tomorrow

kwick · 16/07/2017 11:05

Sounds like a plan Pickle! Did you see there is a new Food program starting this week on BBC about confectionery through the ages?
