Oooooh new thread! I'm place-marking so I can come & read later : ) Type 1 for 35 years here. Haven't ever been offered pump & now wondering why... Hmmmm...

trinity0097 · 03/02/2015 20:16

Was diagnosed yesterday, after a trip to accident and emergency in an ambulance. Sugar levels over 30!
I have now started on tablets and am checking my sugars, but the GP refused to prescribe the needles and testing strips that the hospital said that GP would be able to prescribe. The hospital diabetic team are going to call surgery to sort out!

I was lucky that the on call doctor was a diabetic specialist, so I left with a monitoring kit and prescription straight away rather than having to wait for follow up visits.

They are now figuring out if I have type 1 or 2, apparently too young for 2 and too only for 1, at age 35!

paddyclampo · 05/02/2015 20:31

Holy cow - if your levels were over 30 it's a wonder you weren't in DKA!!

Were you not feeling really poorly? I'm shocked they didn't put you on an insulin drip Shock

hoxty · 03/03/2015 13:23

Hello all,
I'm type 1.5 according to my Drs! Diagnosed at 19, 20 years ago, with MODY and treated only with tablets til my pregnancies (kids now 13 and 9) but I've been on insulin properly for most of the time since. Consultant reckons my pancreas slowly giving up.... I'm also on liraglutide that makes my insulin work a lot better. I am super insulin resistant so take big doses of lantus and novorapid.

Off work this week as I spent the weekend in hospital with DKA. First time it's ever happened, pretty horrid but I had fantastic treatment and am a lot better now. Spending this week pottering around re-titrating my insulin as something is clearly a bit wrong. It was just 6.2 after breakfast tho, so I'm happy with that. More insulin and fewer carbs seems to be the way forward.

hoxty · 03/03/2015 13:25

Re DKA and levels - mine were 14 when they tested in a&e. 2 ketones showing on pee strips and acidotic blood gases. I think it really varies.

paddyclampo · 04/03/2015 21:55

Hi Hoxty

Sorry to hear about the DKA. Thankfully I haven't had it since I was first diagnosed. Do they know what brought it on?

hoxty · 05/03/2015 17:11

I think I've got more insulin resistant and basically wasn't taking enough. Am slowly re-titrating and it's going ok. Chasing my consultant!

SpottyTeacakes · 10/03/2015 19:16

I DKA'd with levels only up to 15 but I had an awful sickness bug!

I still haven't got my pump. It's been over a year since my consultant said I could have one Sad I'm on the list for the next 'lot' apparently.

hoxty · 10/03/2015 19:46

I've talked to my consultant now, and he thinks I had an underlying infection which tipped me into DKA. Makes sense, dp & ds had a nasty bug the week before.

paddyclampo · 10/03/2015 23:27

I share your pain Spotty as I have severe pump envy Envy. But I haven't even been told I can have one :(

A guy in work is in exactly the same boat as me. Both of us were diagnosed when we were under the age of 10, but as we're now adults we're just not worth the effort. That's how it feels sometimes.

That's scary that you went into DKA at 15! I'm really slack at checking for ketones, especially if i'm high but not feeling particularly ill - maybe I've just been lucky!

RueDeWakening · 11/03/2015 22:58

How did I only just spot this topic?!

Checking in (hi Spotty!) - T1 since 1984, pumping since 2004, heavily treated retinopathy caused by massive improvement in levels when I started the pump. Now stable though, thankfully and no other complications to report :)

My pump is a medtronic paradigm 754 and I luffs it.

RueDeWakening · 11/03/2015 23:16

Back again, have just been and read through the thread :o

Has anyone ever seen a psychologist through their diabetes care team? Did you find it helpful? I've been referred to one and have had one appt so far - had to cancel the 2nd appt last week as DS2 came out in chicken pox so I didn't have childcare. I hope it'll be helpful but I don't know. There's too much shit been happening in my life for me to have paid much attention to diabetes for too long now, and I've been feeling very burnt out by it all. And my control (even with a pump) has been shocking since DS2 was born, he's nearly 2 now.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2015 06:38

Hi Rue! Ds is 2.3 now! I've never seen anyone or been offered we. We do have diabetes mood management in our area (the mental health team is great in our area I work at a gp surgery so know a little bit about it). I just find that sometimes, no matter what I do, my readings just don't make sense!

I would love CGM but we absolutely can't afford it. If it was one of my dc I would go without food to get one but not for myself.

paddyclampo · 12/03/2015 12:35

Hi Everyone
I've never been offered a psychologist or ever had any of that sort of support tbh.

I'm a v grumpy type 1 today. Self pity alert .... Someone in work's son has been given the pump after only a year of Type 1 and I keep getting knocked back. It just upsets me that I did my time as a child with type 1, but it seems that now I'm an adult I'm somehow less worthy of the best treatments Sad

SpottyTeacakes · 12/03/2015 12:40

paddy I know exactly how you feel (I know I'm on the list now...) children seem to automatically get them which is great but they shouldn't pick and choose. Especially when you think of the abuse of the nhs.

RueDeWakening · 12/03/2015 23:37

Will see what happens then - it's taken 31 years to be offered this, including over a decade of an eating disorder (deliberately taking less insulin than required to control weight) that nobody seemed bothered about other than to shout at me for my control being rubbish. I'm cautiously hopeful about it but haven't spoken about it at all IRL, not even to my DH.

I can't believe your DS is over 2 already, Spotty! My DS2 will be 2 in May so I shouldn't be that surprised, but still :o and you'll be pleased to hear that having entered the world weighing about as much as a small elephant, he's pretty much continued to follow that line and is massive. So I never did need to feel quite so guilty about his size at birth, apparently.

SpottyTeacakes · 13/03/2015 05:44

Ds is tiny! Obviously was my fault he weighed so much Blush

paddyclampo · 13/03/2015 15:47

Both mine were big Smile

RueDeWakening · 13/03/2015 18:19

Mine have taken it to new levels I think! DD was 9lbs 8oz, DS1 was 3lbs 8oz (9 weeks early, surviving triplet), and then DS2 was 10lbs 8oz Grin

DS1 is the only one that was in nicu though, and that was because he was prem rather than because of anything diabetes related.

paddyclampo · 13/03/2015 19:16

Heehee 10lbs and 6 lbs 14 (5 weeks early) Grin Maybe we just grow them well!

SpottyTeacakes · 13/03/2015 19:25

Paddy my 35 weeker was 7lb13 Grin

Still would love another but dh has said no Sad

paddyclampo · 14/03/2015 10:45

I couldn't go back to babies now! DS is 11 and DD is 9!

hoxty · 14/03/2015 22:33

Mine were 7'10 and 6'11. No more babies here (9 and 13 now)!

paddyclampo · 15/03/2015 23:35

Hypo from hell this pm - 0.9 Shock

Was fully aware throughout, it was so scary. My hands went completely numb and I thought I was having a stroke.

Blood tests all night I think Angry

SpottyTeacakes · 16/03/2015 06:35

Ouch! Don't think I've ever knowingly been that low!
