Hi . Wish I wasn't on this thread but I am the mum to Ds2 who was recently diagnosed type 1. Steep learning curve, HUGE !

Oblomov · 31/07/2014 07:12

Itwillbe, so sorry to hear this. How old is your ds2? How are you doing? Anything you want to ask?

So glad we now have a diabetes topic!

My dd2 is 4, she was diagnosed in dec 12 a month after her 3rd birthday. We got her pump in June (animas vibe) and she uses fulltime dexcom sensors. She also has EDS.

Is anybody else really struggling with the warm weather? Dd is having 3+ hypos every night as she has been playing in the garden each day. Changing basals etc hasn't helped so last night we did a bit of an experiment and gave her quite a big unbolused snack before bed (17g carbs) and she was ok remaining around 6-7.8 all night which was better. Hopefully when it cools down a bit things will be easier.

Oblomov · 01/08/2014 13:09

No surprise.
My pump specialist nurse said many people were having hypos due to the heat.
I have lowered my basals and lowered my meal ratio's and eating more, to compensate.

OP posts:
Edenviolet · 01/08/2014 13:23

In a way its nice to see bgs around 5-6 in day but come early evening and she's hypo all the time. Big snack again tonight I think

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 02/08/2014 08:32

Ds2 is 6, and uses a Medtronic pump. School holidays & hot weather = hypos! We find temp basals don't work too well as he only needs them when active and it's hard to predict when he'll want to run around and when he'll want to play quietly. So lots of un bolused carbs here. Neat apple juice instead of very dilute works well so I'm not forcing extra food on him.

paddyclampo · 02/08/2014 17:26

Oooo I missed this! How exciting to have our own page!!!

I'm Paddy, was diagnosed with type 1 when I was a kid and I'm now pushing 40 so very experienced!

I'm on holiday right now and my levels are really stable. They were rubbish before this, so maybe it was stress. Anyone else find this?

Oblomov · 02/08/2014 19:47

Hello Paddy!!
(Paddy and I have met each other many times on threads over the years)

Stress makes my diabetes go mad, totally unpredictable, and un-pattern-less, more than anything else.

Wow a whole topic just for us!!

Type 1 since I was 12 so 15 years.

Consultant is trying to get me a pump but there's a lot of hoops to jump through it seems Hmm

paddyclampo · 08/08/2014 16:09

Don't get me started on the pump! My consultant keeps trying to get me one but the trust keep knocking me back - main reason being that my control is too good!!!!! Angry

Bramblesinforrin · 08/08/2014 16:18

Waves to everyone. Our own topic and a place to support each other. Wish we didn't have to be here, but at least easier to find help.

mrskitty · 10/08/2014 19:53

Diagnosed T1 4 years ago, aged 34.

Did really well for the first 18 months or so, took the diagnosis positively and worked really hard. Had appallingly rubbish advice from the hospital who took no consideration of my lifestyle or eating habits so I went online and discovered carb counting. I was good, Idecided to restrict carbs to less than 50g per meal, as more than that I found I lost control, and my levels were nearly always around 5-6.

Then... I don't know. I got fed up. I got despondent. I got depressed and I got stressed, and back came my comfort eating habits. And I've been comfort eating for 2 years ... for no comfort. My insulin intake has gone through the roof but so have my blood sugar readings because I'm just not keeping up with the amount of junk I'm eating. I did Dafne but instead of it being helpful in my mind it was like I'd been given free range to eat all sorts of crap, and I lost control, and I cannot get it back - it's like I'm on a self destruct.

At my last consultants appointment I was 'told off' for my hba1c going up to 11 something and I tried to explain how I felt and how I was struggling and was just told to improve it before my next visit. My next visit was supposed to have been in June, yet I've had two appointments cancelled and have just received a rescheduled appointment of November!

I'm so pleased to have found this topic. If anyone wants to give me either a kick up the arse, some encouragement and support or just be there to sound off to it'd be much appreciated!

It's silly. I know what to do to manage better, I know where I'm going wrong and what I should be doing but I'm just not doing it. I've gained 4 stone in 2 years and I'm out of control. Cake Sad

mrskitty · 10/08/2014 19:54

Apologies for double post...

SpottyTeacakes · 10/08/2014 19:58

mrskitty do you have timetotalk in your area? Our local one runs a mood management course I really think you'd find it helpful. It's a shame you've had bad advice.

My consultant happens to be diabetic so I feel like I really do get the best treatment/advice.

I feel like I've hit a bit of a brick wall too tbh. My life is so busy it's just one thing I don't need excuses excuses

mrskitty · 10/08/2014 20:18

Hi Spotty,

Not heard if that...will google. I'm going to say probably not as Wales seems to be somewhat behind compared to England for diabetes care (or maybe that's just my experience!) I will look it up though.

That's exactly how I felt when things started going wrong - that it was just one more thing on top of everything else that I could do without. Of course the irony is that if I could just pull it together again I'd have more energy, and more inclination to get other stuff done....

SpottyTeacakes · 10/08/2014 20:24

Think it's called time to change in wales.

I've just eaten loads of chocolate Blush but my level is 7.9 now so judged it quite well.

It's the injecting I'm fed up with. I feel like I'm running out of room to do it. I'm only 27 and have years left of it. My stomach has two horrible lumps like boobs Blush

NK5BM3 · 10/08/2014 20:30

Hello all, hello spotty!
Erm I have a quick question if I may. My dad is visiting at the moment and he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years ago. Not quite sure why coz he's not obese (everything I read says obesity related!) nor does he eat unhealthily but there you go.

At the moment it's controlled by diet and a pill or 2. He's doing v well. It's his birthday in a week and id like to bake him something.

Looking at websites they seem to say substitute sugar with xylitol and things like that. Is that right? Where can I get that? If you have any suggestions for easy birthday cakes that would be wonderful!!

Thanks in advance!

ohdearitshappeningtome · 10/08/2014 20:30

Hi there!im an insulin dependant type 2! Ppl argue Im a type one!

I have fairly
Good control but I have a new born baby and often forget to take my insulinHmm

SpottyTeacakes · 10/08/2014 20:35

Oh no ohdear can you stick a post it on the kitchen cupboard with the plates in to remind you?

Hi NK Smile I'm not sure on the answer to that I'm afraid, being on insulin injections means I just inject for what I eat, be it a salad or a big slice of chocolate cake. Hopefully someone else can help

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/08/2014 20:46

Hello, what a lovely shiney new topic Smile DH was recently diagnosed with type 2 so I'll be popping in I'm sure.

NK5BM3, DH is also not overweight and has always eaten healthily, it doesn't always go hand in hand with obesity.

You might find xylitol with the sweeteners in the supermarket. I can't remember which brand has which sweetener in it but the labels will say and should have guidelines for how much to use. Don't forget the flour in the cake will also affect blood sugar. One nice 'special treat' I found lately is Lindt excellence 90% dark chocolate. It has 14g carbs / 100g - a fair bit lower than most 'diabetic' chocolate and much nicer!

NK5BM3 · 10/08/2014 20:55

Hi! Wow what quick answers! Smile

Flour has sugar in it too? Ok. Maybe I'll go look on diabetic websites and see what they say. I saw a bbc good food recipe for sugar-free carrot cake which I thought looked good. Then looking at the comments people seemed to be complaining that sultanas are sweet, as is other things
that they added!

Someone else did defend it saying it was fine for diabetics. I took it to mean that the xylitol replacement was good as it would mean he could eat it!

Do you not eat desserts then? Dad seems to be happy eating some cake (store bought, home made) but I thought I could make him a special diabetes one if that makes sense? That way he can have more.

NK5BM3 · 10/08/2014 20:55

Sorry plenty - just read that flour can affect blood sugar, not that it has sugar. Doh!
