I've been a bit high today too! Grrrr!

SpottyTeacakes · 07/10/2014 20:15

It makes you feel so rubbish! Had my flu jab this morning too.

SpottyTeacakes · 08/10/2014 05:48

I'm still feeling unwell, my jaw is really aching, but I went to bed at 5.8 and woke at 5.3. Plus my arm doesn't ache after having my flu jab Smile

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 08/10/2014 21:47

What bolus ratios do people work on? Mine is 1unit to 10 carbs.
What correction ratios do you all use? Mine is 1unit to lower BS 2.5 mmol. If my readings are in the teens or higher this correction ratio doesn't seem to be enough.
Also what sick day rules do people follow?
Spotty -regarding persisting highs my Dr says that once BS goes over 12mmol it is far slower to correct.

SpottyTeacakes · 08/10/2014 21:52

I'm on 1u/10g and correction 1u/2mmol.

Weekends I have 1.5u/10g for breakfast and lunch.

paddyclampo · 08/10/2014 22:09

I'm on exactly the same as Spotty

SpottyTeacakes · 12/10/2014 07:50

I woke up at 19 Shock still got a cold. Anyway I gave a correction dose of 6 (didn't eat anything) that was 2.5 hours ago and I'm not 3.2 Confused

paddyclampo · 12/10/2014 16:58

I'm a bit high today, 18 right now, for no reason in particular!

SpottyTeacakes · 12/10/2014 20:10

I'm 17 for no reason! I hate it when I do everything right and it still doesn't work Angry I wanted some chocolate sponge too but no way I'm going near it now!

paddyclampo · 14/10/2014 21:42

Feeling a bit prickly as I've just read something that said Type 1 diabetes is a disability. I strongly disagree. I'm not disabled!

What does anyone else think?

bettys · 14/10/2014 22:25

Hmm tricky one! Technically it must be classed as a disability as you can claim DLA, though not everyone gets it. Certainly don't think of my ds as disabled due to T1 and nor does he.

paddyclampo · 14/10/2014 23:02

I think that can only be claimed by a parent of a child with T1D. Adults definitely can't claim it, at least not to my knowledge.

Medical condition yes, but calling it a disability makes me hate it more than I already do! Sad

SpottyTeacakes · 15/10/2014 08:32

It is in that it's covered under the disability discrimination act. It's a tricky one. I think the word disability immediately makes you think of someone in a wheelchair or something and therefore your reaction is that it's definitely not a disability. Our bodies don't have the ability to produce insulin so I suppose we have a disabled pancreas Grin

paddyclampo · 15/10/2014 11:47

I just think of myself as pancreatically challenged, not disabled. I always put "no" on application forms if they ask if I have a disability!

WhizzPopBang · 15/10/2014 17:15

Yeah the 'disability' title does seem a bit drastic doesn't it? Apparently it's because as a T1 you are reliant on something external to keep you alive, ie if you didn't have insulin you'd die. That's what the guy on the disability disclosure line said when I spoke to him (I was worried i was going to have to get the union involved in case work weren't supportive enough during my pregnancy, thankfully they were fine)

Kirstycharlie23 · 18/10/2014 09:56

Hi everyone I'm new to this and yesterday found out I have diabetes in pregnancy. I have been given a pack to test my blood sugars 3 times a day. I've been told no sugar at all and to change everything white to brown... Eg bread rice pasta. Can anyone give ME some tips on what to eat please or a good idea for my shopping list I don't have a clue about any of this. Thank you

paddyclampo · 18/10/2014 17:00

Hi Kirsty
I have type 1 diabetes so not the same as you but didn't want to read and run! Have they put you on insulin?

SpottyTeacakes · 18/10/2014 17:37

Me too I'm not sure what they recommend for gestational diabetes. I would probably go for low carb. The Vogel soya and linseed bread is good. Steer clear of low fat yoghurts etc as they have more sugar in them. Have a look at low gi foods too. Also jars of sauce are high in sugar and ready meals etc

Flappingandflying · 19/10/2014 18:59

Hi. I'm mum to Flappinglad who has had type1 since he was 8. He's 14 now and growing like a weed. Got really pissed off at our last appointment. Nothing is ever right. First of all the nurse chunters on about two hypos he'd had. Then they ignore his perfect levels over the holidays and the hb1c of 7.6 and go on and on and on and on about the sea of red showing up with high readings as soon as he goes back to school. They were right but, as I pointed out, if he blood tests, is high then he takes a correction dose. The way they went on (a doctor in training so decided to pull out everything to impress the consultant) it honestly would put some off testing altogether. I felt done over. He is so good, never argues, manages well, doesn't sneak things but we can be guaranteed that the two weeks before an appt he will be as high as a kite. Sigh...

SpottyTeacakes · 19/10/2014 19:08

Is there a reason why his levels are much higher when at school? Wish my parents were like you, they just left me to get on with it really Hmm

paddyclampo · 19/10/2014 20:28

My levels are higher when I'm at school. I think it's either all the germs or a bit of stress which pushes them up!

SpottyTeacakes · 19/10/2014 20:32

I was thinking if his levels are consistently high at school then would it be worth upping his breakfast and lunch ratios on those days? I suppose in a similar way that I do on weekends when I'm lazy and slower Grin

SpottyTeacakes · 22/10/2014 12:27

My gp told me my acr is up at 3.3 it should be less than 2.5. Dr google says it's fine, anyone know?

SpottyTeacakes · 22/10/2014 14:36

It was 0.6 last May Sad

paddyclampo · 22/10/2014 21:03

I don't have a clue what mine is, I only pay attention to my a1c :S
