Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. Sorry. Can I blame the drugs?

Anyway, boy done well for the team but I am very impressed with the downplaying of the sport and respect for Nice instead. It must be very local for some of them.

ThisPanCanCan · 15/07/2016 21:02

Drugs are always a good reason!

Well done Froomey. Bike

Tour madness is setting in ... My dd and her little Twitter bunch of teenage girl cycling fans are having conversations with Ashley House about goats! An hour ago he tweeted them that he thought Santa's sleigh was actually pulled by goats Grin

Dh is happy too - he's had two opportunities to chat with Jered Gruber, who's one of his favourite photographers. And Alex Howes (American rider for Cannondale) retweeted one of dh's photos, so that pleased him too Smile

Today they're driving over Mont Ventoux (they were about 6km down from Chalet Reynard on Thursday) and then heading north to the finish. They're under budget (which given the state of the pound is good!) because they're so tired they haven't eaten out as many evenings as they'd expected - it's been mostly supermarket food and collapsing into bed Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 12:45

That is hard core Tour-following!

Have they plans for the Sunday in Paris? They'll probs have to miss a stage to travel north in time? Unless one of their new buddies fly them...

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/07/2016 13:25

Before Paris they're staying 5 nights in Annecy, so should be well rested by that point. The plan is to see Saturday's stage near the beginning, then do the 5/6/7 hour drive. They're staying Saturday and Sunday nights on the west side of Paris, so a bit of an extra drive on Saturday, but less on Monday when they have to be in St Malo by about 8.30am to drop off the hire car and get to the ferry port for the 10.30 ferry! That'll be an early start!

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 13:26

At this pace Froomey could probably trot along side the group carrying his Bike.

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 13:33

Sounds like an exciting plan! 5 days in Annecy nice - I know it a bit from skiing trips around the region. It's a trip to savour for ever!

Have a dd currently harbouring a massive crush on Marcel Kittell.
He very kindly sent her a signed shirt and note last year when she was ill.

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 13:40

Sweeet!! I'm guessing it helped her recovery.

icouldabeenacontender · 16/07/2016 13:42

Indeed, as well as inspiring her to continue with German next year Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 13:45

sehr gut!

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/07/2016 13:53

There was an interview with Kittel on the Eurosport Extra show before today's live coverage - he was looking happy and healthy and the hair was looking good! Wonder if this will be reflected in his performance today? He does seem lovely - has your daughter seen the Clean Spirit film?

icouldabeenacontender · 16/07/2016 14:31

About 100 times Atia [grins]

MrSlant · 16/07/2016 15:00

The hair is vastly improving as the weeks go on, how lovely that he sent her a signed shirt. Grin

Has Callme surfaced today yet, hope you are feeling better.

Annecy is so beautiful, it's a lovely memory for me because it was the first place I took the DS' on a 'foreign' holiday, three of them piling into a swimming area made in a lake looking up at the mountains in absolute wonder, brilliant stuff. I'd love a link to their blog, should I PM you?

Very happy as I've got my pictures of cyclists going through sunflowers.

Loved this tweet from Froome.

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/07/2016 15:27

Lol, daft question icoulda I guess! Grin

PMing you MrS

MrSlant · 16/07/2016 15:48

Thank you Atia, excellent blog there, well worth a look at for a proper flavour of the tour.

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 16:53

It's Cav's. The One With The Beautiful Hair has nothing to complain about other than being beaten.

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/07/2016 16:56

Yeah, the overhead shot looks like Kittel wobbled before Cav was anywhere near him.

Seems like it's Cav anyway :-D

MrSlant · 16/07/2016 16:59

I would concur.

ThisPanCanCan · 16/07/2016 18:25

Looks like DramaAlpaca is solo-ing up the road! Well done you. Bike

officerhinrika · 16/07/2016 18:29

Cab was going away from Kittel before he wobbled I think.
On a sartorial note has David Millar stuffed the boot of his Maserati with brand new t shirts for each day? He's looking even more dapper than usual, poor Ned can't compete.

officerhinrika · 16/07/2016 18:29

Cav Blush

Callmecordelia · 16/07/2016 20:00

David Millar is really into clothes. I don't think Ned's wardrobe budget is quite as big....

There's a funny bit about finding the Holy grail of a launderette in Ned's yellow jumper book.

Callmecordelia · 16/07/2016 20:03

Which is of course exactly what you were saying officer. I am obviously unable to read today. Me and my painful sinuses are going to slink off now....

DramaAlpaca · 16/07/2016 22:29

Yay, Cav again! Kittel was well beaten there, fair & square.

Thanks Pan. I had a few lucky picks in my team - particularly Adam Yates who's been a revelation this Tour & done far better than I expected him to.
