Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. Oh nonsense Pan. Dumoulin had a big moments at the Vuelta which included two stage wins and holding the leader's jersey for a few days iirc.

lljkk · 10/07/2016 17:14

Am I the only watching today? >

Tonite's highlights will be EXcellent to watch, I promise!

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 17:25

Dumoulin. Sooo... why didn't I put him in my team? Confused

MrSlant · 10/07/2016 17:48

Aaaand THAT is exactly why I had him in my team. It was Dumoulin Day today Grin. Nice one Lurch.

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 18:07

Glad it's a rest day tomorrow. I'm exhausted! Smile

msrisotto · 10/07/2016 18:10

Cycling in the rain Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 18:18

IT seemed to be exactly like the Pyrenees stage I was at last year, in Lannemezan. Baking hot at the role out, to the point of tarmac getting sticky - and then they finished in the mountains in a hail storm. God obv saves his full repertoire for TdF....

MrSlant · 10/07/2016 18:41

Watched it in 12x speed so was fairly restful!

What about Contador then? Would love to know peoples opinions/conspiracy theories.

AtiaoftheJulii · 10/07/2016 19:23

Had my parents here and it's my dad's birthday, so had to let them watch the tennis. (And I couldn't work out how to use the other tv! Blush ) Dh and dd were about 1.5km from the finish - they're staying in El Serrat, the village about 10k down from the finish - and said it was a fantastic atmosphere despite the downpour Grin They stayed there last night, are there tonight and tomorrow night, so I'm hoping they have better weather for their rest day in Andorra!

Loved it today, really enjoying seeing all the battling for the green and polka dot jerseys. No idea about Contador though.

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 19:43

Have you been to those mountains Atia? I've been twice and it's just so beautiful, picturesque and easy. Have thoughts of when ditching this 9-5 (or rather 7-8!) it's a place to go to.

Bertie - looked very odd. Went out on the break, got reeled back, visited the car 4 times. No-one sat in the passenger seat. Talk of fever? So when you have one of those the dr says 'get out riding hard in 28 degrees, esp when you could sit back in the bunch and take it easy.' The Mumbling One was saying it looked all wrong. I'm sure we'll never know, end of Tinkoff or not.

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 19:45

I think I'm strongly suggesting there was no fever and he was going to leave today, once they entered Spain.

AtiaoftheJulii · 10/07/2016 20:15

No, never - dd and dh were both saying last night that Andorra was beautiful and that they wanted to go back already! I love looking at the Pyrenees, would love to visit.

I think your reading of the Bertie situation is probably accurate.

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2016 21:44

Not sure what to think about Contador, other than that he hasn't been in great form these last couple of months.

Chapeau to all of you who have Dumoulin in your teams.

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 22:03

Rest Day in yellow Drama! Super chapeau.Bike

MrSlant · 10/07/2016 22:36

Chapeau Drama, excellent team!

WIBU to go in and give Cancellara and Chavanel a rocket up the arse team talk on the rest day. So far they haven't even made me the points back they cost. They can't just sit back and rest on their good looks you know.

Contador looked all wrong on day one when he went over like a teenager trying out clip in pedals for the first time. He's never managed to look like Contador. Tactical out to work on the Vuelta? Or was it just the closest stop to home?

MrSlant · 10/07/2016 22:42

Ah, I won the village sweepstake for the Euros. Gutted. Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 10/07/2016 23:42

I won the Euros office sweep. Which I organised....as the manager on site.....oops!

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2016 23:57

Enjoy your sweepstake winnings both Football

ThisPanCanCan · 11/07/2016 14:03

It's nice having a day out of the saddle, isn't it? A bit of petit dejeuner, warm up on rollers, massage, bit of tweeting, bit of signing for an entirely other team - that sort of thing. Grin

It would be handy to have an easy ref. to G.'s stage-by-stage description and analysis from the BBC web site that we can look to for each stage as they come up....so here it is! Tomorrow's stage looks an oddity - one mahoosive lump followed by a load of littley lumps - either a strong break away or a punchiers/sprinters?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/07/2016 14:42

It means I don't have to avoid all media before 7pm, anyway.

Looking forward to Thursday.

AtiaoftheJulii · 11/07/2016 17:00

Some gorgeous photos from near the end of yesterday's stage. Dh and dd were on the next corner up.

Did you see G being asked about the weather? "It's like being back in Wales, I like it" Grin

AtiaoftheJulii · 11/07/2016 17:00

Lol, there is supposed to be a link beardyscaravan.com/trips/tour-de-france-2016/stage-9-vielha-val-daran-andorre-arcalis/

lljkk · 11/07/2016 19:59

G's weather assessment was maybe best result of the day. :)

Watching ITV just now... not sure how I feel about ChrisB now picking on his son rather than Ned Boulting.

msrisotto · 11/07/2016 20:55

Me too lljkk. I also really really hate David Millar's reports. His voice is too soft and monotone. I can't hardly hear him and I don't want to.

lljkk · 11/07/2016 21:04

DM needs to slow down & speak up; what he actually says is very insightful but hard to follow, agreed. Liggett & Sherwin both commentating for NBC still (sulk).
