Bike Yes it's July almost, which means only one thing. The biggest, craziest, Frenchiest push bike race in the world. Three weeks of riding round France in multi-coloured lycra, sweating, swearing, playing poker on 380 wheels, tears of joy and frustration, in the saddle for about 5 hours per day, up and down massive hills, throwing the odd tantrum. Then going to bed, and getting up in the morning and doing it all again! Questions: Why? Well we just don't know.Grin When? Starts on Saturday 2nd July with a flat bit from the beautiful Mont Saint- Michel on the Normandy coast to Utah Beach, and ends with the sprint finish on the Champs Elysee, Paris on Sunday 24th July. Where do they go? Essentially they ride for 2,200 miles around the edge of France, and wandering a bit into Spain, Andorre, and Switzerland. This is for the sake of going up and down the Pyrenees and the Alps. Which we know as the 'lumpy bits'. There's a route map coming up. There's always a route map. Is it tiring? Evidence suggests it might be. In the 3 weeks the riders consume the calorific equivalent of eating 252 McD's double cheeseburgers. Some of us are both proud and ashamed of the fact we could eat all of that in the 3 weeks without riding anywhere..... So who wins? It's the person who covers that distance in the shortest time. BUT..it's a team game and the winner cannot do it without all 9 team mates. The prize is 500,000 Euros, which the winner will partly hand out to his buddies. Is it on UK tv? Yes, ITV and Eurosport carry a lot of live action and both do a highlights package for an hour or so each evening. Is there a 'virtual' competition where you can 'buy' a team of riders within a budget and see how they do? I'm glad you asked that. here is a link to everything you will need to show off your directeur skills and have a bit of added interest for the race Do I have to know loads about pro-cycling to understand what's going on? Nope. Have a watch, have a read, ask anything on this thread and your layered knowledge will build and you will get so much more out of it. When are you going to shut up and show the route map? Now. There is that Felicity. We'd look to pick up when the roads go upwards.

FelicityLemon · 06/07/2016 21:43

A bit late but can I leave this dreadful pun here?

Oh Felicity Grin if we had a big grin with tears pouring out of eyes emoticon I would be deploying it now.

Need to catch up properly on the stage, work/actual real cycling got in the way. Buggers.

Is Contador ill or something, I still can't quite get over how a man with his bike handling could go down quite so badly on the first stage like that, I'm wondering if today's non chase down of the break away was also a bit of a polite nod to letting him get back from the falls he had.

My family monopoly will now be falling gracefully down the league tables as our points mostly come from Cav adoration not thinking through proper teams.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 06/07/2016 22:00

Took me a while, that one.

Noticed another of Dan's tweets from yesterday, where he showed T. Voeckler talking to riders at the front of the pack, quoting the line from Terminator 2 " Come with me if you want to live".

MrSlant · 06/07/2016 22:36

I liked his hand gestures, they were a bit more 'anyone, anyone? No, just me then, well if no one minds? Ok, I'll just be over there if you want me' than Arnie IMHO Grin

ThisPanCanCan · 06/07/2016 22:41

Sort of Sargeant Smith "Would you mind awfully if I pedaled a bit faster?"

MrSlant · 06/07/2016 22:47

Yes but with a facial expression of 'because I'm going to fucking fall asleep in the saddle if we continue at this pace much longer' once they couldn't see him.

ThisPanCanCan · 07/07/2016 18:57

Er.....should this sort of thing be actually happening?

ThisPanCanCan · 07/07/2016 19:16

and during this lull.....

I recall there being an agreement with teams and the UCL that riders should NOT throw bidons and musettes away in the country side and only where they will be collected. There was even a zone shortly after the feed zones where it was encouraged. We seem to have forgotten all that and the riders are throwing stuff in streams and under hedges. Angry

Callmecordelia · 07/07/2016 19:27

I'm sure I saw someone getting hit the other day. Must happen a lot.

Nice to have Robbie Mcewen give a little bit of extra interest to the stage commentary.

MrSlant · 07/07/2016 21:25

What sort of thing happening, what have I missed apart from the emergence of another epic GB sprinter?

Or is the the Welsh dominating the league Wink

ThisPanCanCan · 07/07/2016 21:40

Yes those sorts of things. And Cav winning more stages in his dotage.

And yes frankly. Not content with winning the admiration of sports people on mainland Europe, the Welsh have to show off in our little league. Bike

MrSlant · 07/07/2016 21:49

We don't have any climbers, don't worry, it's all over for us once we hit the mountains. Well apart from DS1 who has Froome. Damn him.

Cav is AMAZING. It was his old form and style hanging on the back of any old wheel he could find then hammering across the line. Love the fact that he was accompanied by his replacement! So much to do today it was on pause on and off and we didn't get to see the last part until about 6pm. Ex-H had turned up to collect a couple of sons and got waved to a seat with SHHHHH gestures until we'd seen the final sprint. Fair play he knew the result and didn't say anything. he owes his life to this fact

hazelnutlatte · 07/07/2016 21:56

Cav really is unbeatable this year! Maybe we'll see all of the other sprinters training in the velodrome next year too.
Looking forward to some mountains and the GC battle starting properly now - shame so many contenders have already lost time and are pretty much out of contention.

msrisotto · 07/07/2016 22:01

Another exciting finish from Cav and exciting form from Dan McLay!
Kittel must be aggravated.

AtiaoftheJulii · 08/07/2016 00:20

Kittel doesn't look entirely well - spotty and a bit gaunt.

Am LOVING The Return Of Cav Grin Bike

Dh and dd are having a blast, it seems. Yesterday they were on the penultimate climb (just before GVA pulled away from de Gendt), with their Welsh flag strung between their bikes, nice and spottable on tv. Had a message from dh when I hoped he wasn't too disappointed re the football: "Nah. They did fab, Proud to be welsh. We have had shout outs from the folk on La Caravane on the microphones wishing us luck!!" Which I think made his day, if not the entire trip Grin

maamalady · 08/07/2016 06:19

Yeah, The Return Of Cav is just ace! How could anyone resist his adorable smiley face, eh?

My question is: where the hell is Greipel? Has he been involved at all?

MrSlant · 08/07/2016 07:56

Was it Cav and Griepel that went either side of Sagan on the first day? I said from the presentation that Kittel's hair was looking poor and it was a sign. I was so happy he got a stage the other day. Cav seems to be the only one with any consistency this year. Well that other one isn't doing too badly, is his 'Rocky' video serious or a mickey take. I truly cannot tell.

I keep thinking about your daughter Atia, she must be having the time of her life, how lovely that she's happy to go off with her dad and watch it for three weeks too, nicer than a boozy trip to Corfu to celebrate A levels. Wales did so well, I'm pleased they are getting a triumphant return with open top bus and everything, it's honestly a time when we can say it wasn't winning that counted, they were awesome ambassadors for the country.

msrisotto · 08/07/2016 08:34

Being spotty doesn't mean anything! And tbh, he looks less gaunt than Froomey ever does.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/07/2016 09:34

I picked the wrong sprinter for my team, that's for sure (Griepel).

AtiaoftheJulii · 08/07/2016 10:15

Lol, well I'm not really reading anything into the spottiness, he's just not looking as perfect as he did a couple of years ago Grin

I'd definitely be very concerned about a sprinter as thin as Froome! Bit of a difference there Smile

MrS yes, it's lovely for them - the pair of them get on so well and have so much in common. An amazing memory to look back on. They are keeping a blog, if anyone's interested, pm me for the link.
