My DH and I have started going to the theatre Saturday matinees more regularly now our kids are older teens and we can leave them home alone on Saturday afternoons!!

We have booked Dracula so far as Australian friends have raved about it but wondering what else is coming out that people are excited about?

Saw Hadestown and really enjoyed it. Might even see it again if I can get very cheap seats.

Also saw Last Days at the Royal Opera House, Linbury Theatre. I’m not a big opera buff and it was surreal but we enjoyed it. Loosely based on Kurt Cobains pre-death.

I've been looking at Hadestown but all the tickets in my price range seem to have hideously restricted views. The Lyric Theatre does not seem to have been designed for the majority of the audience to actually see the productions. 🤔

Just booked The Red Shoes on tour

JennyWreny · 10/01/2026 10:53

Saw The Importance of Being Earnest on Thursday which I enjoyed but seats in the circle were very uncomfortable and the view wasn't great.

I have booked -
The Last Five Years at the Palladium
Siegfried at Royal Opera House
Dracula at the Noel Coward (in row C of the stalls - hope not too scary)
Romeo and Juliet at the Howard Pinter
Jesus Christ Superstar at the Palladium - love JCS - can't wait!

Defintiely want to try and see-
All My Sons
Operation Mincemeat
Paddington
Abba Voyage

Booked Miss Saigon last night for April.

Elevenseconds · 14/01/2026 18:25

Can we use this thread to feed back on productions too (with a common sense view on spoilers)?

As in whether we'd recommend or not type thing?

Yes exactly that.

As in "Would recommend x and y stood out in the cast. Try to get seats in the Stalls (you'll see why!) but avoid M34 as there's a pillar in the way. Second half dragged a bit but pulled it back before the curtain call. Icecreams were expensive but delicious." 😂

Matilda, booked 18 months ahead and can’t wait

Comefromaway · 14/01/2026 19:32

I would absolutely recommend Dear England.

HarpQuartet · 14/01/2026 19:33

Yes, I'd enjoy reading people's feedback, even if it's not something I'm planning to go to.

I've joined the Operation Mincemeat bandwagon, except in Milton Keynes - the theatre there is excellent, good sightlines every time I've been. I like The Bridge (London) for the same reason.

EnchantingDecoration · 14/01/2026 19:48

I’d like feedback too. I have been considering Dear England @Comefromaway, it was popping up on my SM so much I had to mute it in the end but I like the sound of it and am a football fan.

HarpQuartet · 14/01/2026 20:05

I loved Dear England. I only watch football for the Euros and world cup. This might mean absolutely nothing, but the hardcore football fan I went with gave it three stars out of five, and I gave it four.

EnchantingDecoration · 14/01/2026 20:35

Well, no sooner had I posted than an email with Jan sale prices for my local theatre for Dear England popped up, so that's that booked.

Elevenseconds · 14/01/2026 21:59

@HarpQuartet Waves from Aylesbury - the Waterside another fabulous theatre with mostly excellent seats. I’ve only been to the MK theatre once but loved the free parking in the evening!

Question for you all - opera. I've never been to one and would like to change that, I was thinking of trying it out with one of the cinema streams, does anyone have any recommendations for entry-level opera? My concern is that I struggle with following without spoken word (I have to read the synopsis thoroughly before I can follow ballet and sometimes musicals luckily I don't mind spoilers)

Dustybuns · 14/01/2026 22:21

Just booked the stranger things show and I’m super excited!

Comefromaway · 14/01/2026 22:28

Out of the ones advertised at the moment maybe Magic Flute (though it’s very fantastical) or La Traviata.

La Boheme or Carmen are good starter operas in general.

The German operas that I have seen have had the words (translated) displayed on screens above the stage and also on screens in the circle etc. I still find it useful to read a synopsis first though. In case you might be interested, The Royal Opera House have a streaming service and I think it's free for young people - can't remember what age (maybe up to 25?). I can't find the info on their website so maybe they have changed their policy. I would definitely recommend going along to an actual performance though, it's an amazing experience.

EnchantingDecoration · 14/01/2026 22:35

Aha, La Traviata is on at the cinema on Sunday @Comefromawayaybe I should try that.

@JennyWreny thank you I do have DC in their early 20s who could subscribe 😀

NigellaWannabe1 · 14/01/2026 23:09

I’m going to watch Matthew Bourne’s Red Shoes too! Can’t wait 🙂

EnchantingDecoration · 14/01/2026 23:20

This thread is going to bankrupt me....

Florencesndzebedee · 14/01/2026 23:53

Going to see an off-west end production of Kenrex next week at the Other Palace. Reviews have been very good. It’s a one man show I think - must be exhausting to play that role night after night yourself.

Frannyisreading · 15/01/2026 07:40

Kenrex is absolutely fantastic. Jack Holden who performs it was taken ill last night but hopefully by next week he'll be fighting fit for you!

Oh no! Hopefully he’ll be ok for our performance.
